Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, by Guy Delisle

Review

"Guy Delisle is a wry 37-year-old French Canadian cartoonist whose work for a French animation studio requires him to oversee production at various Pacific Rim studios on the grim frontiers of free trade. His employer puts him up for months at a time in 'cold and soulless' hotel rooms where he suffers the usual maladies of the long-term boarder: cultural and linguistic alienation, boredom, and cravings for Western food and real coffee. Delisle depicts these sojourns into the heart of isolation in [the] brilliant 'graphic novel' . . . "Pyongyang."" --"Foreign Affairs"

This is an odd book. It brings together the graphic novel and North Korean austerity. Canadian animator Guy Delisle spent time in North Korea, which has apparently become the new favored source for cheap animation labor. In this book Delisle captures the absurdities of life in Pyongyang, more through pictures than through words. Only one floor of Delisle's massive hotel has electricity, there's bizarre and uninspired food, and minimal recreation activities. Delisle brings a copy of 1984 with him, and North Korea is certainly an Orwellian society.I think I would have found this book more effective if I didn't really know anything about North Korea. There's nothing really surprising here. I enjoyed Delisle's drawings, but I felt like there was too much drawing and not enough narrative. I think I'd have preferred an art exhibit to a book. Ultimately the book lacks depth, and the illustrations don't make up for what the writing lacks.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it gave a good view of what it is like to live in a totalitarian society and how the people act just to keep out of the way of the authorities. It also showed that although North Korea wants to show that it is a state which can manage without input from western countries it actually cannot. I liked the drawing style and the humorous way the author conveyed the information. I would recommend this book and will make every effort to find other books by this author to read

For the past two nights I have had dreams about North Korea. I don't recall ever having had a recurring dream. I never dreamt about the North during the early part of this year when I read one book after another about the DPRK. I wonder what tonight's dream will be about, considering I have just finished Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, a graphic novel by Guy Delisle (translated by Helge Dascher). Pyongyang is the first work of graphic fiction I have read. It is classed as a novel but it reflects Delisle's own two-month stay in the North Korean capital where he worked for a French animation company.Delisle's observations and frustrations in having to deal with North Korean bureaucracy made for a hilarious read. Although Delisle is in the country on a two-month work contract, he is still led by guides everywhere. Guest workers, like tourists, must pay their reverential respect at all North Korean monuments and propaganda museums in addition to working at their job six days a week. Delisle is given the propaganda tour and he depicts himself in some drawings as barely able to contain his laughter. He expresses his frustration at not being able to find a decent cup of coffee in the whole country. I know what I have in store yet I will be prepared in that at least I have the foreknowledge to bring my own, albeit inferior, instant coffee when compared to brewed, from home when I travel there. The drawings were made with a variety of perspectives which I admired and enjoyed. In the midst of his adventures working with westerners and North Koreans at the animation studio, Delisle inserts a running joke in the form of a police line-up in which he asks the reader "Can You Spot the Traitors?". One must look at all the people and decide from almost an identical set of characteristics who is a traitor to the fatherland. A typical answer would be Figure #1 because "he let the portrait of Our Dear Leader gather dust". I do not believe that a graphic novel about North Korea would have had the same humorous touch if it had been written and drawn by someone who hadn't been there. A book like this would be a welcome addition to my collection on account of its artwork alone, and although I have already read it I would consider buying a copy.I read the hardcover edition, which was 176 pages printed on a very thick paper. I always had to ensure I wasn't turning two pages at once since it often felt as though I had multiple pages between my fingers.

Since the end of the Korean War, North Korea has become the most isolated, mysterious and fortified country on Earth. Unlike many other remote locations around the world North Korea is not a place many people would want to spend any time. However, thanks to globalization, North Korea's vast supply of super cheap labor and a real need for foreign investment the country has opened its doors just a crack and in peeked cartoonist Guy Delisle for a view at probably the most tightly regulated society on the planet. Mr. Delisle documents his experience in North Korea accompanied by his ever present "guide" and his translator. Pyongyang isn't really a story per se as much as a slice of life glimpse at the daily goings on in North Korea or at least as much of a glimpse as foreigners are allowed to see.The drawing style in Pyongyang is a minimalist black and white that captures nicely the mirthless life in North Korea. You get a sense that the leadership is desperately trying to maintain a good face for the rest of the world but like the bridge in the book that only gets half painted the rust is bleeding through and the cracks are growing. There could hardly be a better advertisement for Capitalism and Democracy than the sterile, dystopia that is North Korea where airports and restaurants operate without lights and massive construction projects sit unfinished and crumbling. Freeways are built without exits and all the people listen to the same state run radio broadcast featuring music that sounds like "a cross between a national anthem and the theme song of a children's show".North Korea has the same kind of creepiness as a cult except on a massive scale where Kim Jung Il acts as patron deity and his smiling visage is ever present in society. Each room has his portrait and his face appears on a pin that all Korean's are required to wear. This is a land where worker can advance by ratting on their fellow citizens and slight infractions can cause people to suddenly vanish.Guy Delisle does a superb job of capturing the bleakness and bizarreness of North Korea contrasting it with his own light hearted rebellious attitude. In the end he tries to retain a shred of normalcy throwing paper airplanes from his apartment window while the people below try and hold it together in a society permeated by fear and mistrust. One of the items that the author brings with him is a copy of George Orwell's `1984' but what he found was the physical manifestations of Orwell's deepest fears brought to life.

I love that we got to go back to the couple that started it all, Snow and Christopher. There's kidnapping, threats, murder, violence and more bad guys but above everything else Snow and Christopher would do everything in their power to make sure the people they love are safe. And Snow along with Quill are still my favourite.I'm even more intrigued by Poe after this book and hope that he and Snow will get back to the friendship they had, I can't wait to get to know Ginger, Jones and Lee better. And I really, really hope that we get to see Snow handing out little Bucks to the men in their circle.

Snow Storm has a bit of everything, suspense, romance, a few laughs, a few tears. Snow is a character was heart, sass, and smarts. He may be pretty, but don't mess with a man who never forgets. It was great to see Snow take the reigns and take down the bad guys. This is my favorite book by Davidson King since Snow Falling, and I highly recommend the whole series. I'm anxiously awaiting the next two books.

These stories keep.getting better and better. This is a story.of.love, survival, and triumph. There is never a dull moment and once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next Haven Hart story.

I love this series and this book is so awesome! Totally exceeded my expectations!!This book must be read in the sequence of the series.Treat yourself !

Outstanding. Could not put down. Almost forgot I was at work. 5 stars is not enough. Ms. King knocked it out the park with this one.

This book exceeded my expectations! It was fast-paced, suspenseful and kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to put it down. I loved revisiting Chris, Snow and Simon. It's been five years since Snow and Christopher met. Their life is perfect - they are passionately in love, have loyal friends and Simon is growing into an amazing young man. But as with everything in life - one blink and it can be gone forever. Chris' past comes to ruin everything they hold dear.Snow and all the guys loyal to the Manos family are trying to figure out who is the threat and how to eliminate it with extreme prejudice. Thus starts the race against time. Through it all Snow doesn't spare either resources or favors to get to the truth. The emotions are high, friendships hang in balance but it all pales against the need to find Chris and Simon unharmed, and the depths Snow will go to do it are unlimited.Secrets long buried come to light. All is not as it seems, and the life as they know it might not have been. But the culprit never knew what they were up against. Snow and Black bring Chris home, and Chris has to make hard decisions. We finally see that side of him that was kept hidden before. The side that allowed him to rise and be the man he is now. But Snow is extraordinary - he loves all of Chris no matter what.I loved the introduction of other assassins from Black's organization, who I think will be the subject of the next book. I loved the guessing game, how Snow worked out the puzzles and how he daringly went into danger to save his husband. Snow and Chris together were just so beautiful! I loved both the dangerous and the quiet sweet moments they had. I liked Simon and a little tidbits we got about his personality and awareness about himself. I bet there will be more trouble coming their way but for now the family is back and safe, Chris and Snow are again as close as can be, and life can't be sweeter. Awesome read that I highly recommend! Well done, Ms King!

Christopher is back with the whole gang and has a story to tell...This is the 5th book in the havens hart series and is now my favorite so far. To say I loved this story would be an understatement. When Snow saved Simon's life he didn't realize how his life would change. Snow gained a husband and a family who he would do anything for. In this story we get to see the lengths Snow will have to go through save them. He has to call in all his favors and use his gift to save them.Christopher and Simon are taken by a vengeful madman and it is up to Snow to bring them home. Everyone will learn what happens when you underestimate him. Snow will do anything to bring them back where they belong, save and sound.Snow has to use all his smarts to solve this and isn't afraid to use all the power of the Manos family.Once the action gets started you will be on the edge of your seat hoping it all works out. Everyone jump in to help and you will love the way they all pull together as a family to save of their own.I loved the way everyone pulled together to bring everyone home safe and sound. Chris and Snow's relationship isn't normal for everyone but it works for them. They love each other totally with all their flaws and it makes this a joy to read. The story has action and mystery that will keep you reading. I loved it and I think the whole series is worth the read.I want Poe's story , so i am hoping Davidson will give it to me the sooner the better. I know that will be a great addition to this series as well. Maybe if we say pretty please. Reviewed for Alpha Book Club.

Haven Hart universe 5 is just another reason Davidson King is on top of her game. Snow’s love for his husband Christopher and his nephew Simon who for all intent purpose is his son, is deep and unmovable. When Christopher and Si are kidnapped, you see a side of Snow that shows he will stop at nothing to get his family back. I enjoyed how their enemies underestimated Snow and by doing this Snow showed the world how truly strong and smart he really is.Snow will move heaven and earth to get his family back so he calls in all of our favorite players. SS is a fast-paced chess game of wit, sprinkled with tons of sass, humor and intrigue. Snow’s interactions with his neighbor Mrs. Markle will keep you laughing way after you finish the book. One thing I will say is Poe’s character only gets more fascinating, and I can’t wait to read his story.5 stars for Snow Falling, this is book 5 and not a stand alone so please go back and read the prior books, you will love them.

No Eye Can See (Kinship and Courage Series #2), by Jane Kirkpatrick

From Publishers Weekly

Christian novelist Kirkpatrick follows her well-received All Together in One Place with this rich and engaging sequel that could easily stand alone. She picks up the story of 11 women who have banded together to travel west on the Oregon Trail after losing their menfolk. Kirkpatrick's gifts as a writer are most evident in the surprising complexity of her female characters and in her ability to weave historical details into her story without overwhelming it. The fascinating moments of daily routine on the trail and in California's mining towns fit effortlessly with the plot and include the varying experiences of different races (Chinese and Indian) as well as of men and women. The author brings her heroines alive with full complements of both endearing and frustrating qualities, keeping them on even footing with each other and leaving the reader unsure what they might do next. Kirkpatrick is convincingly insightful about the conflicting emotions these women experience during dramatic life changes, allowing them to struggle, change their minds, make mistakes and start over on different tracks. The novel's chief flaw is that the male characters are far less developed, especially the villainous Zane Randolph. He provides a gripping, driving tension to the novel, but he is too one-dimensionally evil. Even so, this second installment in the Kinship and Courage trilogy satisfies overall as entertainment, as historical fiction and as a thoughtful exploration of human character and community. This is the second book in the 3 book saga. I just totally loved the first book so much that i bought the next two books. I will have to honestly say that I almost did not finish this second book. I really enjoyed reading about the next chapter in the lives of the women and their struggles-the author is really good at bringing out personalities in her characters and human nature and families. What I didn't like was the "bad guy" character Zane-he was really not a nice person, evil, manipulative and there was so much of him in this book. and in the end we don't know if he died for sure or some how survived-in the end I am thinking the author did her job with this character but it almost kept me from finishing the book as I disliked him so much.

The whole selection of Jane Kirkpatrick's novels are good. I could not put this down and if you want even a better one, "A Sweetness to My Soul" is tear jerking. All Mrs. Kirkpatrick writings are fantastic. Please be sure you read her writings that are series in the right order. I got to meet her, what a pleasant lady.

All the characters were flawed, but they grew to love, trust and respect each other. They were bound together in kinship as they became like family and as they watched each other courageously conquer and overcome adversity. It is a great book if it makes me flinch, breathe faster, stop and reread. And it did!

Our book club read this series! What great conversations we had. The writing was so visual, you could picture what the characters looked like, how life would be on the trail. I appreciate Jane's writing because it has depth to it. I appreciate how she takes a little piece of a person, researches, and takes liberty to share about them. So the fiction has some truth about it and we learn something! Our book club will continue to have Jane's books in our cycles of reads!

Jane Kirkpatrick's sequel serves up another wholesome read. We follow the women into Shasta City where their journey ends and the attempt to make a living and a home for themselves becomes their newest priority. Each woman must face their own issues and cope with their personal frailties. In the face of the gold rush, everything becomes more complicated and expensive. Should they ban together as before, or should they say goodbye and get on with their lives independently? This is another rich story guaranteed to prolong reader's fascination for this time period.

The characters are very well drawn as were the individual story lines of the main characters. The ending was a bit abrupt with the story of the villain some what unresolved but I definitely would recommend the book to a friend.

Good book

This is the second book of the Kinship and Courage series. I enjoyed continuing the saga of the characters from the first book and seeing what happened next in their lives. I would highly recommend it.
