This book has beautiful illustrations of some of our most well-known friends in heaven. The author added a lovely saint quote for each. The quotes mean much to myself, but I felt the wording was at a level where children (particularly pre-school and first grade), do not grasp the vocabulary used. I had to paraphrase many of the quotes to my first grader (and saints are not a new concept to her). I had purchased the book to add to our collection for the Feast of All Saints.

I just got this for my 2.75-year-old. He loved it. It's simple and sweet, and I loved the saints' quotes and the artist's use of color. It's a perfect "first book of saints."

I ordered this for a baby, and, while I like the book, the baby does not. The pages on the inside are a lot of text (specifically quotes from the Saints); text isn’t usually a bad thing, but it’s not exactly engaging for very small children. I’ve been using it as a teaching tool for my older kids, and they seem to get more use out of it, so although it’s not being read as intended, it’s still a useful book.

Beautiful sort of minimal illustrations, excellent quotes. Very different from a typical cheesy/educational saint book. Got this as a gift for a one year old and wanted to keep it myself! It’s his favorite mass book and his parents love it.

I love this book! The saints are some that my family already has a connection to, so we had such fun identifying them as we read through. The illustrations are gorgeous--simple, but thoughtful--and the quotes are helpful for parent and child alike to reflect on. I appreciate the quotes not being in toned-down child's language, because it opens the way for conversation. Highly recommend.

What a beautiful book to share with my little boy! As a Catholic family, we love having as many faith inspired books as we can to be able to teach him about the faith. This book is a beautiful way to share Saint quotes and teach our son about each of the saints. Because we loved the book so much, we have actually ordered 3 and gave them all away as gifts! So, we will be ordering one for our own child very soon! Thank you for sharing this book with all of us, it's beautiful!

I love this board book. It fits well in my purse to come with us to mass, often with one of the Shining Light Dolls that I match up with these saints. Some books in this drama have images that are so cartoonish they are creepy, but these illustrations are lovely and attractive to children.

Cute book for little ones. Each page has picture of a saint and a quote from each- all famous quotes I’ve heard before and love. The quotes require explaining to the kids as to what they mean.

Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith - The Collected Stories (Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith - Legends), by John Jackson Miller

From the Author

The Fate of the Jedi novels introduce readers to a hidden Sith society, living apart from the rest of the galaxy for five thousand years. But how did they come to be? Lost Tribe of the Sith answers that question. Spanning millennia, this series of short stories introduces the original unlikely castaways -- and shows how their society was shaped. Lost Tribe of the Sith - The Collected Stories includes the original eight short stories, plus Pandemonium, and all-new novella -- and, for the first time, maps of the world the Sith are stranded on. The chronicles of the Lost Tribe continue in a new comics series from Dark Horse -- but they all begin here!

I went into this book not expecting much of anything, not hearing anything good or bad one way or the other and I came out the other end absolutely loving it!This book is a must read for any fan of Legends or Star Wars books in general, taking place thousands of years before the films and even the KOTOR games, these collected short stories (that all link together) follow a group of Sith who have crash landed on a planet filled with natives. The Sith do what they do best and the story goes on from there. There is a few stories that take place with the same characters but then the timeline jumps forward giving you fresh new characters and a changing world.I was not expecting to love the characters and mythology that Miller created as much as I do. It feels alive and just as Star Wars as anything else you love.If you like stories that take place in the Old Republic you'll love this, if you love the Sith you'll love this, if you love good Star Wars you'll love this!Trust me you've got to read this sooner than later! (I read it in less than a week, you won't get bored!)

This is an excellent collection of stories regarding the Lost Tribe of the Sith. Each tale focuses on a key event in the history of the tribe. Since these are Sith, there is plenty of treachery, deceit, killing and the never ending quest for power. Interesting characters and a great insight into Sith psychology make this a great read. The last story is rather chilling, particularly how the Sith learn to "assist" in a different way. A must read for Star Wars fans interested in the history of the Sith.

I enjoyed this "series" much more than the Fate of the Jedi series it leads up to. John Jackson Miller manages to create a compelling history for the planet Kesh. While it does not achieve the complexity, subtlety, and scale of Tolkien's Middle Earth, it is still impressive considering the majority of the story is told through a single volume of short stories (if you don't include the five issue comic series, which I haven't read). It was interesting to see how a colony of Sith cope with crash landing on a planet with no hope of escape. In this scenario my gut reaction would be that things are not going to end well, with various factions forming to destroy each other, infighting, and power grabs. While this does happen frequently throughout the history Miller has created, there are occasionally leaders that exhibit one of the Sith's most under underrated attributes, the ability to plan for the long game.

John Jackson Miller writes a most compelling and enjoyable Star Wars story for the everyday fan. This was a lite and brisk read broken down into small vignettes which focused on different aspects of the world he creates. A departure for most die hard Star Wars fans, it allows the casual reader to jump in with little to no background knowledge. This isn't to say that those who grew up with the Expanded Universe will be disappointed. On the contrary, Miller's writing is so crisp that it can suck all into its descriptive cinescapes. This lovely departure is filled with unique landscapes, well thought out technology and a cast of characters that are easy to make your own. This might be off the beaten Star Wars path, but it's a wonderful journey to take.

For the past few years, the Star Wars Expanded Universe was largely focused on a series of novels collectively called "Fate of the Jedi". One of the major antagonist groups of the story was the so-called "Lost Tribe of the Sith", which pretty much came out of nowhere, spawning the rather memorable Vestara Khai. It also introduced a compelling back story for the Lost Tribe, which was only marginally explored in those novels.Concurrent with the main novels, however, a series of short stories were released (for free, no less) as e-books. Knowing that they would eventually be gathered into one collection, I waited for that to happen. Sure enough, here it is, and perhaps equally as predictable, the collection comes with a novella that brings the sprawling narrative to a firm conclusion. (Notice that the novella wasn't free, only the stories leading up to it; the novella is only available in the collection!)The nature of the collection is such that some of the stories interconnect directly, one after the other, but it covers a period of 2000 years or so before all is said and done. In essence, it is the long process of the arrival of the human Sith to Kesh, their early struggles with non-human fellow Sith and native Keshari, and ultimately their path to survival. (It also leads into the recently started "Lost Tribe of the Sith" comic series from Dark Horse.)By its very nature, the collection is rather narrow in terms of audience. If you didn't read a word of "Fate of the Jedi", and no practically nothing of the much older comics continuity of roughly the same period, a lot of the references and context will mean nothing. There is some basic arc structure to the collection, tying it all together, but I'm not sure it's enough to make this a must-read for the casually initiated. For my own part, the Lost Tribe has represented one of the few opportunities for those working on the Star Wars Expanded Universe to provide the Sith with a reasonable philosophical underpinning for their vision of galactic society. Various books have delved into the struggle to balance Jedi righteousness with a free government, but the Sith (their equal but opposite) has rarely been anything more than monolithically evil and self-serving.To some degree, this book does touch on the notion that the Sith themselves run into the problem of what happens when an entire society builds itself on the notion of individual hunger for power and control. In short, society breaks down in such a situation, unless there is something for that society to strive for as a unit. Looking at this notion from a historical standpoint in the real world, there's some truth to it.But it still retains the primary problem: the Sith remain two-dimensional villains. They don't pursue self-interest logically (a philosophy that recognizes that serving one's own interests means attending to those of society in a rational, balanced fashion), but rather, by constantly trying to screw each other over. It reminds me very much of the depiction of Slytherins in "Harry Potter" or Republicans in just about any Aaron Sorkin production; while there is lip service to the existence of well-balanced individuals in those groups, all too often, it descends into a skewed stereotype.Still, this is not entirely the fault of the author, since this all derives from Lucas' original inability to portray the Sith as anything but melodramatic villains of unimaginable evil. It's not as if Anakin was lured to the Dark Side by persuasive argument! For what it is, the book delivers exactly what one would expect, and provides some solid short stories in the process.

This is amazing book! At first pages you don't understand nothing and you felt disorientate for the period of time, but as you go on the book becomes like water in the dry savannah, you just can't leave it. The adventures of the Lost tribes are interesting and very mysterious just like whole Star Wars universe. This book is totally worth for money and later I'll read it again!

Interesting story about an isolated Sith 'tribe' with more primitive technology. The plot was interesting enough to keep me hooked to the end, but the atmosphere and stylistic feel of the book was so different from many other Star Wars novels that I didn't find it 5 star amazing.

Don't trust a man who gives this less than 5 stars. He's probably the police.

TLDR: Funny and entertaining. Simple choice to pick up for you or a friend with its low price point.I have had this pre-ordered for months, and after a long wait it is everything I wanted and more.First off, this is an insane amount of entertainment for the price. It is filled with witty comments and real historical context. It has more than 200 pages of content that everyone can enjoy. Even Floyd Mayweather can have fun because the illustrations by Arturo Torres are incredible. See page 158 for an incredible version of 50 Cent as The Thing or Lil Wayne as a goblin on page 188.Shea's writing style is an easy read and is an entertaining "controlled chaos" with the use of footnotes to bring laughs is right out of the Bill Simmons playbook. It reads like a well-informed humorous and persuasive rant. Can't wait for Serrano's next project.

Full disclosure I didn't actually order this book from Amazon. I got it as a gift. Basically, I had to attend this dinner party with my girlfriend where I was about to meet a group of people I'd never met before. It was important to me to make a good first impression and not be this boring dude with nothing interesting to say. The night before I could barely sleep. When I finally did get to sleep I had the strangest dream. The ghost of Big Pun came out of my closet and into my bedroom. I was like oh my god...you're really him. Big Moon Dog, Big Punisher, Pun...Pun was like "yeah yeah kid and a bunch of other dopey nicknames, forget about that stuff, we don't have much time. I'm here because you're in some kind of a pickle, right? Some big dinner party, and you got nothing to say? Here's what I want you to do, go in there, and talk about hip hop."I said, hey Pun, look man, I don't know the first thing about hip-hop. I'm a real pale blond kid from the suburbs. The Big Pun looked at me and he said something I'll never forget. He said, "Everyone gets a chance to do something great. Most people never take that chance, either they're too scared, or they don't recognize it when it spits on their shoes. Remember when you followed Shea Serrano on twitter the other day? Someone's telling you something kid, if I were you, I'd listen."Then as he headed back towards my closet, he went over to my desk and picked up six rulers. He said, "six rulers...I don't know why, but can I take these?" I told him sure thing, and thanks for the advice. He told me, " Remember kid, there's heroes, and there's legends. Heroes, get remembered, but legends never die." And then he was gone. I woke up the next morning and this book was under my pillow. I spent the whole day reading it. And I crushed that dinner party. They're talking about making it a weekly thing.

This is the 3 Wolf Moon of Yearbooks, only if instead of Wolves, it's got Biggie, Tupac, and the God MC himself, Rakim.Ordinary yearbooks don't have pages and pages of painstakingly hand-drawn illustrations; no, all they've got are crappy snapshots that some wage-slave took on the hottest day of the year, then didn't even bother photoshopping (or airbrushing, 'cuz I'm old school like that).Ordinary yearbooks only let you pick one quote, and most people botch even that with something lame from Led Zeppelin that even the band was too high to figure out. *This* yearbook is packed with quotes, cover-to-cover! And not only that, they're the cream of the crop! Seriously, if anyone in my high school had dropped something as epic as "Fish, which is my favorite dish" as their yearbook quote, I probably could've just skipped college.Ordinary yearbooks are full of photos of your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend...and that's only if you were actually lucky enough to *have* one. *This* yearbook is full of old familiar friends that you're actually happy to read about.Ordinary yearbooks are full of lame-ass notes that your friends scribbled on the last day of school. *This* yearbook is full of the bomb-ass wit and wisdom of Dr. Shea Serrano, PhD (I'm just assuming that he's going to have been awarded multiple honorary doctorates by the time you're reading this).Ordinary yearbooks make you think your past was lame. *This* yearbook is a reminder of how freakin' amazing your past actually was.The insight contained in the pages of this book would be a bargain at any price. Buy it. Buy it now...and then buy it again...because C.R.E.A.M.

Get it for your girl on your anniversary, she deserves it. Get it for your dad/grandpa so he can climb up the dad rankings. Just don't get it for that guy that calls playing basketball "hoops". He's probably the police.
