Review

“From babka to breadsticks, Breaking Breads is a definitive guide.”—Food & Wine, The Best Cookbooks for 2016 “A delight to contemplate, offering up utterly creative and beautiful challahs, babkas, rugelach, burekas, and pita, with a small array of savory dips, salads, and condiments at the end. It’s baker porn.”—The Boston Globe, The Season’s Best Cookbooks “Uri Scheft’s new cookbook falls midway between two trends—Old World baking and Israeli cuisine—and the results are deeply satisfying. . . . Scheft’s recipes are fairly simple for a baking book, without the torturously long instructions many traditional methods can include. And there are plenty of sidebars, with tips.”—Los Angeles Times, Our Favorite Cookbooks of Fall 2016 “Stunning. . . . Scheft, the force behind Lehamim Bakery in Tel Aviv and Breads Bakery in New York, has contributed mightily to the canon of bread-focused books not only for his wizard use of Middle Eastern ingredients but also for helping to create such stunning process and technique photography.”—The Washington Post, The Best Cookbooks of 2016   “[Scheft’s] generously portioned recipes for basic doughs (e.g., challah, babka, brioche, flatbreads) lend themselves to endless variation, and general home bakers can use them to produce both simple rolls and dramatic, festive loaves. [The book] explains the dough’s look and feel during all stages of preparation and includes plenty of step-by-step photographs to illustrate more challenging braiding, coiling, and other shaping techniques. . . . An essential modern Middle Eastern baking collection featuring delights such as shakshuka focaccia and chocolate rugelach.”—Library Journal, starred review   “No matter your heritage, this collection will expand your horizons.”—Minneapolis Star Tribune “This beautiful book . . . provides a thorough look into the many influences that have shaped the world of Israeli baking . . . full of enough details and photos to encourage even a novice baker to bake.”—Haaretz.com   “Drawing from his Israeli heritage, childhood love of fresh breads, and global travels, Uri makes the international classics . . . and lesser-known European, Israeli, and Middle Eastern Breads . . . accessible for the home baker. . . . This cookbook is truly a bread baker’s guide to Europe and the Middle East.”—Bake from Scratch magazine   “A bold and beautiful collection of updated classics and playful riffs.”—The Forward   “To sample Scheft’s chocolate babka is at once a blessing and a curse: It’ll become an obsession. But thanks to [Breaking Breads] you can make it at home—with the help of step-by-step photograph instructions that ensure babka success.”—TastingTable.com “Uri Scheft is the quintessential Israeli baker. His breads, pastries, and babkas have been blowing my mind since I first ate them on the sidewalk of his bakery in Tel Aviv. This is the book that I have been yearning to read."—Michael Solomonov, author and chef/owner of Zahav "Uri Scheft's reader-friendly instructions, gleaned from a lifetime of baking, lead would-be bakers into the kitchen. I love this book."—Joan Nathan, author of King Solomon's Table “I've been waiting for Uri to reveal the secrets to his incredible babka and chocolate rugelach. He finally reveals them and more in Breaking Breads, which melds Middle Eastern flavors with modern tastes. I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and baking my way through his groundbreaking book.”—David Lebovitz, author of My Paris Kitchen “The ultimate modern guide to the world of global Jewish and Middle Eastern baking. Master baker Uri Scheft shares his craft and knowledge of craveable savory and sweet baked goods, inviting you to make them in your own home.”—Lior Lev Sercarz, author and owner of La Boîte "From challah to kubaneh, burekas to pita, this is the most definitive and important book on Israeli breads and baking."—Einat Admony, author and chef/owner of Taïm and Balaboosta

I wanted to love this book, I did. I even gave it as gifts. It's gorgeous, it's backed by impressive credentials: a famous baker, a beloved cuisine, media hype, and my own bias toward Israeli food, but for the home baker I find it seriously lacking.I've made three recipes so far and all of them were riddled with errors: inaccurate proof times, lack of cohesive shaping instructions, recipes that needed altering in one way or another: too much salt, not enough water, incoherent shaping instructions. This isn't a big deal for the experienced baker, but these kinds of errors are disaster for a less experienced cook. Without prior bread baking knowledge these recipes would not have turned out. We're there any recipe testers??I'll go recipe by recipe. Light brioche was anything but. Proof time was written as 40 min - 1 hour. Note, the recipe includes FROZEN butter. It took over three hours for the dough to warm enough to rise and that was putting it near the fire in the living room. The end result was a slightly dense, overly chewy brioche, a far cry from what I love about brioche: light, airy, pillowy.Focaccia: the instructions manage to be overly verbose and vague at the same time; the amount of shaping and the cryptic instructions on rolling into cylinders multiple times then dimpling kills the beautiful supple pillowyness of focaccia. Again, proof times were seriously underestimated. The flavor was seriously lacking, so next time I'll try his rather confusing instructions on prefermenting part of the dough (there's some mathematical computations to sort this out) but I can't imagine a two hour pre ferment to help much. I'd call that an autolyse rather than pre ferment. The cook times are grossly understated for all three of these breads leading me to wonder if these recipes were tested by home cooks.Lastly, the za'atar pitas. This was the most accurate of the three recipes that I tried. The only problem was the baking instructions to cook two trays at once, rotating part way through. The bottom tray poofed beautifully but did not brown, the top tray browned but didn't rise as they should have had I baked the trays one at a time on the baking stone in the bottom of the oven. Like the other three breads they required 25-30% longer bake times than suggested. These are all minor adjustments that any experienced baker can compensate for but the most glaring problems with the book are layout issues. There are photos throughout without instructions on how to achieve such breads, just eye candy. I feel this failing is widespread in cookbooks today, gorgeous impressive books that wow with photography but fall short in instruction. But the largest problem is how the recipes are written, there is no timeline, no bakers schedule. So you have to read through two, three, four pages adding up proofing times to see how long any particular bread will take. Can it be made in a day, an afternoon, a weekend? You don't know this unless you read through each recipe and with the proof times being wildly inaccurate it's hard to make an educated guess. After making just three breads my book is riddled with notes and adjustments, which is not a good start. I'd suggest this for the experienced baker and I will continue to cook from it, but not with confidence. It's more inspiration, than education.

Most commenters thus far seem a little bit in awe of the beauty of this book, and it is indeed beautiful, but personally, I'm getting tired of the memoir/cookbook/gorgeous photo thing. I look for a book with clear instructions, impeccable proofreading, and interesting recipes. This book mostly supplies those things. But be warned, most of these recipes not only call for but apparently require the use of a stand mixer -- if you don't have one that can handle stiff doughs, don't buy the book. I also found his instructions to be on the skimpy side. Note there is no instruction for the bread on the cover; he only includes a single, simple style of braiding in the book. It's easy to figure out, but I suspect the ring requires more dough, longer braids, and at least possibly a longer baking time. I'd like to be told that rather than have to wonder and experiment myself -- especially for the bread that graces the cover.I am also a little bewildered by some of the proofing times. He says his dough should increase in size by 70 percent after a forty minute proof in a "warm kitchen." Honestly, I think the kitchen would have to be in the upper 90s to achieve that kind of proof, if even then. He does not give temperatures in any event, instead instructing the reader to use "cool" water for example. This is not a huge problem for experienced bakers, but I think he could have given some time/temperature starting points. There also are not a large number of bread recipes, only a few; the remainder is sweets and savory pastries. That's fine, but it is advertised as a bread book and I was hoping for a bit more variety than it offers in that regard. In sum, if all you are looking for is challah, you can find that in many places, including the Internet. If you are looking for a variety of Israeli/Middle Eastern/Jewish flatbreads, don't expect a lot of that here. If you want precise instructions, those aren't here either. If you don't have a stand mixer and aren't about to get one, this book will be of no use to you. But as an introduction to challah and a manual of other sweet and savory baked items, it's pretty good.

I've had this book a couple weeks and only made two things, but both have been wonderful. When my husband and I visited Israel we had the Jerusalem Bagels (we called them sesame breads not knowing their name) and I'd been trying to reproduce them ever since. Close but not exactly was always the result. Now I can make them any time and they are what we remember. To celebrate our 44th anniversary I made the chocolate Babka. It takes time but it really wasn't difficult. A little messy when twisting the loaf together (author warns of this), but for chocolate lovers it's a special treat.

I enjoyed the tale of moving, of becoming acclimatized, of become a near-local. I also noted that Portuguese bureaucracy seems quite similar to Brazil's. Neither seem conducive to starting and/or running a business in the manner of London or coastal US.

I found this book to be informative and fun. It described many of the pitfalls that result when moving to Portugal and how they overcame them. There seems to be no agenda except to give information. Since it is my plan to move to Portugal, my copy is already dog-earred and highlighted!

Very well written, a fantastic mix of practical advice and personal experience. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the authors' journey as they settled into their new home and found myself wanting to read more and more. A big thank you from Australia for the inspiring read!

Very informative book for those interested in learning the process and pitfalls of moving into Portugal.Funny stories, frustrating experiences, beauracracy, visitors, and many more topics.

we are going next spring [to visit not move Trump maybe who knows]definitely made some have to see notes

Wonderful read, but we wanted to fallow them and they had moved back. Did not detour us from our planned trip. Book was great for info and entertainment.

Very informative. Many topics were addressed that had not occurred to me previously. Also, a very good reference section at the end.

I started out reading the author's blog because my husband and I are considering a move to Portugal in a few years after we retire. When I found out about the book I had to get it, especially since his wife also contributed to the content of the book so it wouldn't just be his blog put down into book format. I have not yet read the entire book, but already have learned so much about Portugal and the challenges involved in moving there. The book is very informative, with plenty of information on the people, customs, travel within the country, etc. I'm sure there will still be much to learn when we get there, but after reading Moving to Portugal, I feel that we at least have a good foundation from which to start.

Review

"God's Country tracks four centuries of a Bible-reading people's thoughts about the people of the Bible. Samuel Goldman tells a fascinating, surprising story."—Richard Brookhiser, author of Founders' Son: A Life of Abraham Lincoln"A serious and substantial contribution to U.S. intellectual history. Samuel Goldman's careful reading of the relationship between American Protestants and a biblically grounded Zionism not only provides expert understanding of the deeply religious foundation of American Exceptionalism but also forces a reconsideration of the intellectual terrain."—Raymond Haberski, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis"Significant and surprising. . . . [God's Country] not only traces the 200 years of scriptural interpretation and evangelical exhortation connecting Adams and Pence but also delves into 200 years of prior British Protestantism that shaped the outlook of the Revolutionary generation."—Commentary"Drawing from an extensive body of literature that spans several disciplines, Samuel Goldman's God's Country describes the religious and political phenomenon of American Christian Zionism in ways that are accessible to scholars, students, and general readers alike. The book is the best overview we have of this complex and timely topic."—Michael Lienesch, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"Goldman's book could not be more timely. If you want to understand how the Christian right, once known as anti-Semitic, can now be pro-Zionist, this is the book for you."—Alan Wolfe, Boston College"This study of the history of pro- and anti-Israel ideas among American Christians from the Colonial period to the present day challenges the stereotypes that often distort discussions of Christian Zionism and offers useful observations about one of the most important political forces in American life."—Foreign Affairs

I agree with the first review by “ Customer.” I am disappointed to see that, as of now (Jan. 2019), there are few reviews on Amazon for this important book which has been so well received in scholarly circles. Hopefully, this does not reflect a paucity of buyers. Highly readable, it is well worth reading for those trying to understand the strong bonds between Judaism/Zionism and Christian America from the very beginnings of our earliest settlements.

As an individual with a ThM in historical theology from one of America's leading conservative seminaries, this book is saying the same things we were taught in the late 70s. When one actually reads and studies the original sources, the American Puritans, this is indeed what they taught and believed. This viewpoint is not some great breakthrough, however, it may be new to certain people groups who have not taken seriously the theological factors motivating the Puritan fathers. Glad this understanding is getting a wider distribution.

A wonderfully written, thoroughly researched, and eminently readable account of the relationship between Christianity and Zionism. Far from a modern phenomenon tied to the religious right, Goldman demonstrates that the relationship between American Christianity and the modern State of Israel can be traced back to the 17th century Puritans, long before Theodore Herzl and the founding of the modern ZIonist movement.

The premise of this book sounded fun and I could imagine great stories from a devilishly incorrigible child raised in a home with a father who is a priest. There was so much potentiaal, and some of the stories are, in fact, humorous. I am just not cool enough to understand the dialogue of the author who is always overly dramatic, uses oblique references and wants to shock you at every turn with her attempt to be the complete opposite of her religious parents. Coupled with her "way too hip" references on all things from Twitter rants to a whole chapter devoted to semen stains on a hotel bed, I just could not finish this book. I am far from prude and initially laughed at her mother's response to the stains on the bed, but after about 200 slang references to the "fluid" I just could not read/listen further. I also pride myself on trying to stay relevant to the younger generatiion's terms and references, but she just goes way too far to shock the reader. I get it, it is her attempt to be cool and hip, and in reality I believe it is her personality to be the shocking and diabolically rebellious child of her religious parents. In her defense, half of what grated on me was the narration in the audiobook version which I believe was read by the author and completely over-acted with grating and unbelieveably over done voices! Could have been a really good book, but there were just too many obscure references for me to finish the book.

This book had me alternately in stitches and poignantly moved by the author's life with her aloof, guitar-playing, bombastic, slovenly, congregation-caring, Catholic priest of a father and her OCD, warm, hilarious, nurturing, charismatic mother, and her outraged, sensitive husband and her scarred siblings who somehow survived a pretty oppressive upbringing with the saving grace of humor and their mother's unconditional love. Lockwood had me laughing out loud for extended periods with her astute observations described so accurately and poetically that one could see, taste, smell or hear the scene just as she did. A cautionary tale by a talented writer that painfully reveals why this priest should not have also been a parent. However, her mother was a saint! Loved this book!

Very much enjoyed the first half of the book as there were ,any laugh out loud moment. The second half of the book bordered on tedious. The fact the writer is a poet became obvious. The text became wordy and over flowery to the point it was hard to follow.

The sentences are like great big treats to wrap your head around. The book is also flat-out funny. Ms. Lockwood finds a unique way to say anything, but what is more gripping is her story: she runs away with a fellow lover of poetry and this man becomes her husband. They move back in with her Father, the all-consuming cheddar-devouring "Homey don't play that," lead of the book. Patricia never attends a dull MFA, never moves to a cool, hipster city, and still her poems are picked from a Newyorker slush pile because they are that damned good. Better still: the way she sees the world, colored by this early Catholic lens that animates her now secular readings of culture which are filled with all her father's bombast. Then there are sweet, touching moments, like her relaying of the life of a calm church handyman who endured much. I loved this book.

Listening to this audio book was like sipping on a soul-soothing, bottomless vanilla latte in front of a fire with nothing to do but be entertained. Lockwood's writing is one poetic sentence after another, metaphor after metaphor, strung together with magnificent style, superbly manifesting colorful characters by letting us in to "hear" their language and observe their actions through her eyes - all the while knowing that her view is as skewed and filtered as any flawed human being is. i LOVED this book and am planning on listening to it again. i highly recommend the audiobook!

As someone who grew up in a religious family, and as a seminary graduate who was in the ministry for five years, I found this book to be a great read. It is humorous but never mean-spirited, and offers illuminating thoughts for anyone who is interested in what life is like for those who grow up in a minister's family. This is not a "religious" book. Rather it is a thoughtful rumination on institutional religion and how it is perceived by those within and outside of that circle. It is a highly entertaining reflection on familial and marital relationships within the context of growing up in the often times wacky ecclesiastical world.

I am not a poet or especially into poetry, so perhaps am not the best reader of this careening, caroming and often overwritten and overwrought memoir of growing up with very odd parents in a particularly odd setting—Catholic rectories and a sort of Catholic world. It is quite funny and jammed with strange anecdotes and I get why it delighted the critics.

Someone recommended to me and said this book was hilarious. I guess it is just not my type of humor. I stopped reading, I found it not that interesting or compelling.
