Travels With My Royal: A Memoir Of The Writing Life (The Basque Series), by Robert Laxalt

From Publishers Weekly

After 17 books and 20 years of National Geographic reportage, Laxalt lets readers peek behind the curtain at the man and his writing process. Divided into three parts "Growing Up," "Writing Days" and "Selected Books and How They Came To Be" Laxalt's anecdotal memoir describes the forces that shaped him personally and professionally, from his boyhood in Carson City, Nev., through his years as a globe-trotting journalist. In terse yet resonant prose, reminiscent of his previous works, he details how, as a United Press correspondent, he covered executions and interviewed gangsters. As a journalist for National Geographic, he traveled extensively, exploring the life of the gauchos in Argentina and traversing the spine of the Pyrenees. Equally compelling are poignant stories of his beloved Nevada and his Basque-immigrant family: his father was a sheepherder; his mother owned a hotel. In the final section he writes, "the creative process is largely unexplainable," but then deftly examines the nuts and bolts of some of his most important works, including Sweet Promised Land, still in print after 40 years. Readers are privy to the intersections between his outward life and his imagination, where plots and characters were born, and to the answers to the questions that each of his stories poses. For readers unfamiliar with Laxalt, this is a great introduction after putting it down, one wants to pick up his previous writings, both fiction and non. From Library Journal

Laxalt has led a dynamic and multidimensional life, which he now shares in this memoir. He describes his experiences growing up in Nevada during the Depression, which include his family stories of bootlegging and raising sheep. He made it through school and eventually to the University of Nevada, Reno. After graduation, he began a career in journalism, and his life took off. He served as director of news and publications at the University of Nevada and held a simultaneous two-decade assignment as a National Geographic writer; he also cofounded the University of Nevada Press. In his career, he has interviewed mobsters and ridden with gauchos in Argentina, among other things. The second half of the memoir provides background for the books he has written, which include A Man in the Wheatfield, In a Hundred Graves: A Basque Portrait, and The Basque Hotel. This is a fascinating look into the life of one of our great journalists. By the way, the Royal he refers to in his title is the Royal typewriter he carried with him for years. For all collections. Loved this memoir and greatly respected the author!

Most of Robert Laxalt's books incorporate some kind of personal reminiscence -- whether it's his arrestingly beautiful portraits of life in the Basque Country or his semi-autobiographical trilogy about a Basque-American family in the West -- but "Travels with My Royal" is his only forthright memoir of his childhood and life as a writer. For fifty years an inseparable mechanical friend traveled alongside him -- his portable Royal typewriter. A gift from his mother, he took it all over the world and wrote all of his books and magazine articles on it.Born in Alturas, California, in 1923, (a place that became a ghost town not long after), Laxalt was raised in Carson City, Nevada, the second son in a family of immigrant French Basques. His father, Dominique, was a former livestock baron (a "baron of sorts") who saw his flock of over 60,000 sheep and cattle wiped out by a ranch crash and a freeze in the early 1920s. Consequently, he had to go back into the hills and build up his fortune again, slowly, living the hard life of a sheepherder, separated most of the year from his family. Economic woes marked Laxalt's childhood. He mentions how ashamed he was that his mother, who ran an otherwise respectable Basque boardinghouse, sold whiskey on the sly during Prohibition. At school he was often taunted for being the son of a bootlegger.Yet the family eventually got on its feet again, and after spending a year in the Belgian Congo during World War II, Laxalt graduated from the University of Nevada and began to forge a successful career in journalism. His first book, "Sweet Promised Land" (1957), recounts his father Dominique's return to his birthplace in the Basque Country, St. Jean Pied-de-Port up in the French Pyrenees, fifty years after he left it, and the emotional recognition that his real home was not there, but in the hills of western Nevada. In print for over forty years, "Sweet Promised Land" was Laxalt's most resounding success, even though he confesses in "Travels with My Royal" that it was torture to write.Laxalt wrote 16 more books (fiction and non-fiction) before his death earlier this year, and was a regular contributor to National Geographic (he discusses his long love-hate relationship with that magazine in this book). He also taught at the University of Nevada, was the director of its press, and helped found the Basque Studies Program there. Anyone interested in the Basques will soon learn that Laxalt has done more than probably any other writer to help us understand their world. If you're not already familiar with Laxalt's books, read a few first. Here he talks about how works like "Sweet Promised Land" and "In a Hundred Graves" came about, and if you haven't read them, some of it will go over your head.

Champion. Survivor.Hero. Legend.Completed just two days before Louis Zamperini's death at age 97, Don't Give Up, Don't Give In shares a lifetime of wisdom, insight, and humor from one of America's most inspiring lives. Zamperini's story has touched millions through Laura Hillenbrand's biography Unbroken, soon to be a major motion picture directed by Angelina Jolie. Now, in his own words, Louis Zamperini reveals, with warmth and great charm, the essential values and lessons that sustained him throughout his remarkable journey. He was a youthful troublemaker from California who turned his life around to become a 1936 Olympian and a world-class miler at the University of Southern California. Putting aside his superstar track career, Louis Zamperini volunteered for the army before Pearl Harbor and was thrust into the violent combat of World War II as a B-24 bombardier. While on a rescue mission, his plane went down in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, where he survived, against all odds, drifting two thousand miles in a small raft for forty-seven days. His struggle was only beginning: Zamperini was captured by the Japanese and, for more than two years, he courageously endured torture and psychological abuse in a series of prisoner-of-war camps. He returned home to face more dark hours, but in 1949 Zamperini's life was transformed by a spiritual rebirth that would guide him through the next sixty-five years of his long and happy life. Cowritten with longtime collaborator David Rensin, Louis Zamperini's Don't Give Up, Don't Give In is an extraordinary last testament that captures the wisdom of a life lived to the fullest. A son of Italian immigrants, Louis Zamperini (1917–2014) was a U.S. Olympic runner, World War II bombardier, and POW survivor. After the war, he returned to the United States to found the Victory Boys Camp for at-risk youth and became an inspirational speaker. Zamperini's story was told in his 2003 autobiography Devil at My Heels, as well as in Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 biography Unbroken.David Rensin worked closely with Louis Zamperini for many years and cowrote Devil at My Heels, as well as fifteen other books, including five New York Times bestsellers.

I had heard of Louis Zamperini from his affiliation with the Billy Graham organization because my Mother admired Reverend Graham. But I did not dig into his life story. Of course the biography and movie “Unbroken” put this fine man in the public eye in a very prominent way. I wanted to read HIS words, so I got this book. While I admired the movie, I was disappointed that it focused only on his story as a prisoner of war after being lost at sea. I think the really important part of his life was his struggles after he came home and then his conversion to Christ. Of course, that makes our age most uncomfortable. But without that, he would have been just a brave POW who came home and fell apart with drink (as my grandfather did after WWI) and was destroyed by PTSD (which they called battle fatigue or some such). All the Olympics and his war experiences became significant because of his conversion and the way he used his life and experiences to bless, motivate, teach, and lead others – especially troubled youth. He understood troubled youth because he was one himself. This book tells the various stories from his life, but with the purpose of illustrating points he wants to make to help people live better, happier, more positive lives. He never holds himself up as a paragon to emulate, but uses his stories to illustrate what he did wrong, what is possible, and how he found the right way and used that path to help others with the message that you can, too!He talks about the focus, strength, and lessons that running gave his life and what appearing in the Olympics meant for him. He talks about the importance of being prepared for what life throws at you, because you won’t be able to anticipate it all. And you need a sense of humor, as well. A positive attitude each day will provide the power to get through dark times. The lessons of his horrible war experiences are critical. He teaches about the power of not giving in, but also in learning to not hate. That hating is self-punishment and forgiveness is freeing and healing. The secret to life, he teaches us, isn’t the events or circumstances you have but your attitude towards them. After the war, he was still lost. But there is a way and an answer for everything. Of course, many times people will not accept the answer or follow the way. And then they mistakenly believe there aren’t answers and there is no way.He ends the books with several beautiful chapters on how we can bless our lives by giving, what he’s learned, what he believes the Olympic Spirit is, and how he wants to be remembered and encourages us to have a charitable heart.A very nice little book.Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI

Great follow up to his previous work via Devils on my Heel or Unbroken. Easy read. Book size (physically) is about 2/3 the size of a regular book, so even though it has 230 pages it's more like 125 pages if it were a regular size book. [It's the shape of square versus a rectangular book] Still, it's great to hear the last words and testimony of Louis before his passing. Great life lessons because he takes the reader into the internal thought process as he is going through the adverse moments. I would compare this to Viktor Frankl's: Man's Search for Meaning.

Read this after Devil at My Heels."This second memoir, dictated to co-writer Rensin during the last year of the author’s life, brims with sage wisdom, learned advice and fond observations from his adventurous 97 years. Zamperini answers the most recurring questions asked of him during book signings and lectures, mostly pertaining to his adventures after his service in World War II, his secret to living honorably and what role his faith in God played. The author weaves practical advice into anecdotes on his parents, his troubled adolescence, his post-military spiritual connection with Billy Graham, and how his affinity for distance running on an Olympic level honed enough mental discipline to endure and survive the sadistic torture of a Japanese POW camp and the PTSD that followed. The author also provides robust wilderness survival tips, which saved his life while adrift on a life raft in the Pacific Ocean and during his service as a U.S. Army Air Force bombardier. Certainly, his counsel is often platitudinous (exercise forgiveness, challenge yourself, be positive, and give back), but it’s also inspirational, and his words will offer a reflective refresher course for those receptive to it. Never boastful yet full of prideful personality, Zamperini’s tireless zest manifested in his later years with speaking engagements and collaboration with the Angelina Jolie–produced film adaptation of Lauren Hillenbrand’s best-selling book Unbroken (2010), based on his astonishing, fruitful life. Stuffed with bolstering, life-affirmative reinforcement, Zamperini’s legacy lives on through words and film, embodied best by a photograph of the nonagenarian skillfully riding a skateboard."

Louis was a true example of courage. I can't imagine how a person that goes through what he experienced has so much positivity to spread. The book is about how the experience he lived as POW impacts his choices and how he channels the negative energy into positive acts after he is released. If you are looking for a book about his journey during war, this is not the book you want to read. This book is only about some of his experiences after the war is finished.

Great book. Louie faced many obstacles in his long life and this book reminds the reader that it's how we face these challenges that make us who we are. This book is both inspiring and reassuring that "if you can take it, you can make it." "Without dark clouds, there could be no silver linings." Louie embraced life . . . all of it. And what a life he had because he accepted his circumstances, good and bad, and grew from them throughout his 97 years--always learning, always experiencing and never holding back. Perhaps the best part of the book is about the importance of forgiveness; how forgiveness liberates the person harmed. I highly recommend this book, especially on the eve of a new year; the chance for new beginnings.

his is an excellent history of the Spanish conquest of Peru and its aftermath. Detailed history of Inca resistance and initial losses. It was a much hard fought colonization than usually presented in history books. Give lush detail on the activities of the later Inca emperor in their struggle to rid themselves of the Spanish. The one drawback is that MacQuarrie give little ;credit to the Indian allies of the Spanish. He makes it sound like a small band of Spanish on horses fended off hundreds of thousands of the Incas and there allies in one siege that last for more than a year. At the same time, it is clear that the Incas had powerful native enemies. This part of the story is hardly convincing. Otherwise it is a great read,

This is a great overview of the Incas after their first contact with the Spanish. I picked up this book after traveling to Peru as I was just fascinated by everything Inca when I was there and realized how little I knew. I would recommend you read this book BEFORE you go to Peru if you are going; picturing thousands of warriors standing atop Sacsaywaman fighting 100 Spanish knights, and being able to see the walls they stood on would be breathtaking.Sadly, this book really only focuses on the Spanish conquest, but this is not the fault of the author. The lack of writing, and the ruthless culling of all things local by the Spanish after their arrival, means that the specifics of the Inca's history is incredibly sparse pre-conquest.Definitely a great book to read if you are interested in the Incas.

I am amazed at the level of detail in this book right from the first footsteps in the foreign land. Incredible read that places you in the heart of historical battles and conquest as if you were there. One such battle, puts 200 Conquistadors (and slaves) against an Inca army of 20,000 warriors the author puts you in the very heart of the battle so you can not help but feel the rising panic in your throat as you read.A Very well researched book that explores not only the differing cultures but highlights mans unflinching avarice and greed, often becoming more savage than the "savages" being conquered in the name of a God the inca never could comprehend or understand.

I do recommend this book but there are two issues I have:1. The author basically exonerates the Incan leadership of any blame for the defeats by Pizarro. Of course no one can know how long the Incans could have held out against a continuous onslaught of Spanish over time, but better leadership from Atahualpa and Pizzaro is an unknown person in history. The Incans like the Romans got a Commodus when they needed a Marcus Aurelius...2. The author does not do a very good job of showing the exploitative structure that was the Incan Empire. For sure the Incas had better government than the Aztecs, but it was still a very exploitative structure...in fact, the encomienda system was very similar to the Incan system. All this said, this is overall a very good book and I would highly recommend it.

This is an excellent book, and does a superb job in detailing the last years of the Inca Empire. Kim has done a marvellous job in bringing the last years of the Inca Empire. I had read about this vaguely, but this brought a whole new world to life.He has been balanced in his approach, and while he undoubtedly indicts the Spanish for their appalling behaviour, he does, subtly, show that they were brave (but, cruel) men, who had no respect for the Inca culture. This is, however, not restricted to the Spanish. The English did not respect Indian culture when they came into India. My own countrymen have been guilty of similar transgressions, I am sure, when the South Indian kings spread Hindu culture in South Easy Asia. This does not excuse the Spaniards, however. The last days have been brought to life in a manner that is sad, exciting, tragic all rolled into one. Yes, I agree with the reviewer "CJA' in that he could have spoken about how the Spanish subsequently tried to stamp out the Inca culture, but I would not have traded this for the tale of how the ruins were discovered. All in all, a marvellous book.

Kim MacQuarrie provides a well-written, and engaging telling of the first Spanish incursions into Peru, from the Extremadura origins of the Pizarro family, to the execution of Atahualpa and beyond. I picked this up because I was planning a trip to Peru, and, specifically, Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu and Puno. At halfway through the book, I've learned a great deal about the pre-Colombian societies that pre-dated the rise of the Inca, the story of the rise of the Inca, the complicated succession struggles among Inca royalty, the Spanish designs on manipulating the Inca leaders to increase their wealth and gain social standing and so forth. The tale is a bloody one, but MacQuarrie tells it well, and gives a thorough accounting of all the major players. The book comes complete with illustrations and quotes pertinent to each historical period. I strongly recommmend this as a read for someone with little to no knowledge of Peruvian history.

The author did a good job at giving the reader advice on how to quit bad habits and make good habits a routine. The advice was also realistic. For example, a smoker has a better chance of quitting if he/she weeds out of tobacco instead of trying to quit cold turkey.
