Review
"When reason is not enough to grasp the paradoxes and riddles of life, then faith must come to terms with them. It is both refreshing and liberating that Cicovacki, a professor of philosophy not literature, avoids the jargon and cant of literary studies and subsequently feels no need to bow before the altars of various distracting postmodern pieties. This is a solid work of scholarship and common sense… Recommended." —D. Pesta, Choice “Fedor Dostoevskii is commonly perceived as a gloomy writer who focused on the dark side of life, on crime, madness, injustice, and suffering. Predrag Cicovacki finds that, while Dostoevskii’s uncompromising realism led him to depict the manifest evil in the world, his optimistic faith that life has meaning is always discernible. . . . Cicovacki makes a thoughtful case for Dostoevskii’s optimism. . . . [H]e frequently interweaves his study with speculative connections between Dostoevskii’s fiction and numerous artists, writers, thinkers, and philosophers.” —Diane Oenning Thompson, Slavic Review “[A] lively and absorbing journey… Cicovacki’s discriminating and subtle criticism challenges many fixed assumptions about Dostoevsky’s writings and worldview” —Robert L. Jackson, author of Dostoevsky’s Quest for Form and Dialogues with Dostoevsky “This book is a philosophical investigation of a paradox: How does Dostoevsky succeed in uplifting people’s hearts by telling tales full of sound and fury? Predrag Cicovacki’s answer is an inspiring offer to read Dostoevsky’s classics a new, with a figure in the carpet woven by Hegel.” —Horst-Jürgen Gerigk, editor-in-chief of Dostoevsky Studies “[Q]uite possibly the best single volume written in English on the greatest writer of the Nineteenth Century.” —Nalin Ranasinghe, author of The Soul of Socrates and Socrates in the Underworld “[I]nteresting and enthralling.” —Ruben Apressyan, Head of the Department of Ethics at the Institute of Philosophy, Russian Academy of Sciences “No serious student of the writer can afford to overlook this penetrating, erudite and insightful study.” —Joseph Frank, author, Dostoevsky; Stanford University “Cicovacki summarizes Dostoevsky’s religious and moral positions and those of his characters in the light of later critics and earlier thinkers and artists. Whether one accepts or rejects the summaries, the book provokes serious thinking.” —Robert Belknap, professor emeritus and director of university seminars, Columbia University; author, The Genesis of The Brothers Karamazov: The Aesthetics, Ideology, and Psychology of Making a Text

Reading this excellent book has resulted in a demonstration of the Law of Unintended Consequences. Like many people I have read Dostoevsky over the years, but very rarely return to the novels in their entirely, largely because they require extraordinary time and concentration for a general reader (such as myself). So when this book came to my attention it seemed like an effective and efficient way to revisit Dostoevsky. That was a mistake (more about that later).Cicovacki focuses upon five major works (Notes From the Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Possessed, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov) to reveal insight for Dostoevsky's philosophy of life and his spirituality, which features a clear-eyed realism regarding the sorrows of life and yet optimism for redemption by sustaining one's humanity throughout the inevitable trials. Dostoevsky's Christianity draws upon the God of the Book of Job and the Christ of the Gospels, sacrificed for mankind and a model of sacrifice for mankind. Good and evil co-exist in Dostoevsky's world, and Cicovacki vividly demonstrates how that tension is portrayed in the novels and why there is good reason to consider Dostoevsky an optimist (on balance). For some, this book will be of little value but for others you will find great insight and comfort. The difference may be decided by what one considers the "affirmation of life." If materialism and "progress" is your sole metric, maybe take a pass. If, however, our humanity (how we interact with others, how we empathize, and how we retain an appreciation for certain mysteries in life) is your primary denominator, then dive in.Here are some brief excerpts that will give you a flavor of what to expect (chosen by flipping though the book): "It is the very nature of human language (and thought) that, although being a way toward revealing the truth, it is at the same time inadequate to it. As Yuri Lotman puts it, "The truth glimmers dimly" through our words, but are incapable of naming the truth precisely." (p. 115) "Humanism and secularism, by contrast, appear to [Dostoevsky] as practically opportune but spiritually dishonest: They offer a compromise that makes life more convenient but which leads away from search for the highest values." (p. 145) "While modernity attempts to demystify the world, so that we can control it and mold it to satisfy our needs, Dostoevsky believes that we have dangerously impoverished the world in our effort to master it." (p. 152)Beautifully written, 'Dostoevsky and the Affirmation of Life' is filled with intelligent commentary on the novels, their characters, and appreciation for Dostoevsky's genius. Even if your exposure to Dostoevsky is limited, if you are sympathetic with his message you will find this book a treasure. And the mistake? Obviously, this book has rekindled a desire to re-read the original texts and all intentions of being "effective and efficient" have come to naught. This summer's beach-read will likely be Notes From the Underground. Oh, woe is me!
Cerebral and well substantiated viewpoints taken from Dostoevsky's own life and writings, this book is a brainstormer in a good way. Anyone who wrestles with the insanity of our world as people choose to make it, including ourselves, will garner insight into why we should go on living and believing. It appears that the famous Russian author, who went through unspeakable suffering throughout his life but found refuge in his surviving children, his second wife, Anna, and the many people he knew, good and bad, whom he wrote about in disguise in his stories, there was purpose which kept him going. A deep faith in God and the resurrection of Jesus also gave him hope and comfort that the struggles of life are tests which determines your future in this world and the next. It is how you react to these tests that matters most in surviving and enjoying life's wonders.
