You can tell from the price of drinks that the information in the book hasn't been updated in years. In the section on cruising, it was suggested that single's cabins were being phased out. This, despite a photograph of The Breakaway - a ship which has has introduced the concept of solo cruising. When discussing roaming charges, not all cellular companies have outrageous roaming fees. There are scant few maps. For example, while reading about the Swizzle Inn, I could not find where it was located. Maybe that was located in a different book?

Very dull book. Simple black and white map and pictures, and very few of them. Small print. I received much nicer packet of info from gotobermuda.com that was free and included two very nice colored maps. This book was a waste of money.

First time I've been disappointed with Fodor's. Rough guide provided a lot more information about the sites we were seeing than Fodor's did. This guide was set up so that you'd need local guides to gain better insight into the history of the sites. Problem is "unofficial" guides and hustlers are everywhere in the medinas. I've previously only used Fodor's, but that won't be the case going forward.

Great travel book with lots of insider tips. We were on a cruise that docked in Bermuda for two nights/three days so we didn't have a ton of time. But I decided to save money but not doing the cruise excursions. We used this book to plan our own days and got to many of the things we wanted to see.

I am more inclined to get travel information on-line; husband more inclined to buy a Fodor's book. Actually it turns out that we cross check information. We have found that Fodor's information is always the best and most accurate. Since this trip to one of our more exotic trips we have checked and cross checked often. The book has not disappointed us. As always Amazon ships quickly and the book arrived in great condition. No doubt it will come with us when we're away.

This is a great compact review of Oahu that gives you a decent amount of information on only that island. I liked it better than Fodor's Hawaii because we were only going to Oahu. The best guide book I found though (I read 4) wad Oahu Revealed. It told about a lot of local and out of the way places that were incredible and was spot on in it's reviews. If you only get 1 guidebook about Oahu, get that one. This was a good second and was smaller and cheaper.

Good resource. Nice quick reference to have on hand. Maps are good. Definitely suggest going Online to websites. Very heavy leaning toward golf which, of course, is big in Bermuda. These guides can become obsolete quickly.

I just came back from our cruise and nothing in the book proved inaccurate. Reading the book prior to leaving was quite fun, building anticipation. But the book is organized as a collection of shorter books or articles more than as a classical guidebook with sections like "attractions," "hotels" and "restaurants." I was expecting because of the Fodors name something more like the old mobil guides or like a AAA book. Where themes for the articles overlapped they repeated the same information twice. They did not in any way take advantage of the ebook potential by making links when the book repeated. Consideringthe high price tag on the Fodors book when I bought it, I think the sample from less expensive Moon Travel Guide was just as or more informative and I wish I had bought that one. http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Bermuda-Handbooks-Rosemary-Jones-ebook/dp/B007QSQWOW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403544961&sr=8-1&keywords=bermuda+moon+kindle+guide

I quite enjoyed this book; I found it on a whim on Amazon, read the preview, and found myself hooked. I bought it and read it quickly, and having just finished it, I am very, very pleased. I more than got my $3.99s worth! The book is written well, and the writer clearly has a grasp on characters, arcs, tension, all that stuff, but the majority of the book is tabletop RPG style magic rules explanations. Probably half the book. Another quarter I would say is people planning their next move. And yet it's fascinating; I can't quite explain why. Rowe has definitely done his homework, and all of the magic makes sense, and it's delightful to read interesting scientific lessons on how runes work, and then to get to the latter half of the book where you see characters using that knowledge to their best possible advantage. It's really cool, really! It's a very scientific approach to magic, and I like that; Rowe has crafted a complicated magic system and then filled his world with characters smart enough to use it for power, justice, and even cash. I really can't explain the delight of watching the protagonist try to theorize the most profitable use for enchanting.Moving to some down sides, however, this being the first book in a series, Rowe opens up a lot of plot elements and starts a lot of ideas rolling that really don't go anywhere. It's obvious they're not dead plot lines, and will appear later, but unfortunately the author doesn't leave us with tantalizing cliffhangers so much as random disconnections: for example, in the middle of a small arc, a single paragraph introduced what seemed to be a major plot point and resolved the subsequent encounter, having the character go right back to what he was doing as if nothing had happened. That plot point is only mentioned once more, in one line, ever again. It was a truly weird moment! In addition, the chapters themselves are often more episodic in the middle of the book than linear, meaning a chapter about crafting is followed by some learning about the lore, followed by a chapter about a social encounter, Maki the middle feel like the tension and tempo really slow down. Really, the beginning of the book and the end of the book seem the most connected as a through lined plot, with the middle sort of losing its way a bit. Again, it's still a great read in the middle, but it feels like the book needs to explain a lot of things to you so you can understand why all the characters do what they do; something I as a reader quite loved, but might not be everyone else's cup of tea!I'm rambling, but the bottom line is, I really liked this book. I'm very excited for the sequal, and interested to see where it goes, and I'll be buying the sequel as soon as it's out!

A test opens this complicated and lengthy young adult fantasy. Most of the test is fighting various monsters and solving puzzles in a mysterious tower. The similarity to role playing games is intentional. There are two main goals to going into the tower: survival and gaining an attunement. Survival is not guaranteed. An attunement is the combination of an affinity and an ability in connection with a particular sort of magic. Corin Cadence is our young male hero. His trip into the tower also has the goal of finding out what happened to his older brother who entered the tower and never returned. Right from the beginning, Corin’s trip in the tower goes astray as unexpected and unusual events begin to happen. All of this is explained at length in the story and in long appendix materials at the end of the book. The system of magic is complex and that complexity detracts from its attractiveness and the story. Most of the book is set in the boarding school that Corin and other young people with attunements enter after exiting the tower. The cast of characters is lengthy as well with professors, students, family members, and mysterious entities. The plot involves some coming of age themes, magical training, treachery, loyalty, war, and political intrigue. For me, it all got a bit muddled and the excessive complications interfered with my connection to the story and the characters. The author was committed to creating the fantasy world, a religious tangle of multiple gods with a ruling Goddess, fantasy weapons, and his system of magic in great detail. I felt like I was slogging through the book at times. There is a great deal of fighting and violence in the book, but it is mostly is a fantasy type of fighting and lacks gruesome details. The swearing is made up words. There are hints of some mild and innocent romance/flirtation that includes the possibility of a same sex relationship. The book is the first in a series and this volume ends with many unresolved issues. There are other young adult fantasy series that I have found to more engaging, including, for example, the Rebel of the Sands trilogy by Alwyn Hamilton, The Queen’s Thief Series by Megan Whalen Turner, The Chronicles of Kazam series by Jasper Fforde, the Shifting Tides series by James Maxwell, not to mention the Earthsea Cycle by Ursula LeGuin or Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

As someone who took up snowboarding at the end of last season, I was eager to make the most of the off-season and decided to purchase a "how to" book on the sport and settled on "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" ... I figured it would at least keep snowboarding on my mind during the summer. Unfortunately, it sat on my bookshelf all summer and through the first two months of this season. After a few trips boarding this season I caught a full-blown case of snowboard fever and decided to finally read this book. Understanding that reading a book is no substitute for time on the mountain and more importantly, lessons ... I pleasantly found "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" to be much more than a simple "how to" book.Being 44 years old and taking on an endeavor dominated by people half my age, my initial experiences on a snowboard were fraught with frustration and to some degree, desperation. Having learned how to ski (snow and water), surf and skateboard when I was younger, I was somewhat dismayed at the awkwardness associated with being strapped to a board. My mind told me that it must be easier than skiing (two feet on one plane vs. each foot on its own plane) and actually doing it was another matter altogether. Lessons? Sure ... there is no substitute, but I needed to be educated on a few things prior to purchasing a lift ticket for lessons ... a prep course on everything from the necessary equipment, the anatomy and purpose of that equipment, snowboarder vernacular, etc. My goal was to have a basic knowledge of things in order to understand the instructor and more importantly, ask questions without sounding like a complete idiot. "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" provided virtually everything I was hoping for and much more. The book is broken down into two parts: The first part (about one-third of the book) focuses on pre-mountain issues ("Before the snow") and the second part (remaining two-thirds of the book) is dedicated to time "on the snow". I found the first part of the book to be indispensible, as Kevin Ryan delves into the mental and physical aspects of snowboarding. Visualization, focus, fear, anxiety and "thinking vs. doing" are topics discussed in the first chapter. Ryan believes these issues are what usually determine whether or not people stick with the sport. Subsequent chapters detail the human body mechanics and how it applies to snowboarding, as well as the role physics plays into a boarder remaining on the board vs. on his/her back. The prep-work provided by these initial chapters prove their value as all the topics previously discussed come together when the book finally reaches the "on the snow" point. When the "on the snow" part of the book begins, the mental and physical aspects are applied to practical use which made this portion of the book easier to comprehend. I feel too many "how too" type books go straight to the subject without creating any base knowledge beforehand ... akin to teaching someone an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo when the person doesn't even know what a fret board is. "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" educates and expands the reader's knowledge on the subject, regardless of their snowboarding level. Chapters are dedicated to Novice, Intermediate and Advanced boarders with a "Q and A" segment at each chapter's end that I found particularly helpful. Chapters are also devoted to general knowledge (anatomy of a snowboard), snowboard lingo (names associated with tricks) and other necessities (what you will need to wear when snowboarding). Peppered throughout the book are "tips from the pros" that lend support to the topic being covered. The animated illustrations (in lieu of photos) that course through the book are extremely helpful as they assist with reader comprehension and are often entertaining.I feel "The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding" is better than I ever anticipated. I found the manner in which Ryan organized his book extremely helpful as each chapter reinforces information learned in previous chapters to build a solid base of practical knowledge of snowboarding. Although no book can serve as a substitute for actually being on a snowboard, this book enhances the experience. I often refer to the first chapters when I go snowboarding (as recently as last night). The effective format and the abundance of useful, as well as practical information should be appealing to boarders of all levels. To the novice snowboarder, this book tends to generate a sense of appreciation for the sport and more importantly ... an eagerness to get on a board and ride.

The author has good knowledge of not only snowboarding, but also of human psychology as well. He is probably well-educated and explains the psychological, physiological, physics, and technical aspects of snowboarding very well. The illustrations are nice. So nice, I wish they were more of them and they should have been larger. The drawings could have been little more detailed as well. The book is geared towards the beginners and beginner/intermediate. If you are already familiar with snowboarding and want to take it to the intermediate level, this is a good book.My main issue with this book is that it was published in 1998 and already over 12 years old. So much of the information on snowboarding, especially the equipment aspects, are old or obsolete. The author still refers to tying a snowboard leash, which almost no one uses these days. The author readily admits that no book can replace actual lessons or practice. But then again, I took some lessons and not all instructors are as knowledgeable or even willing to share intermediate level knowledge with a beginner snowboarder. So I recommend you supplement your snowboard lessons with this book.If you have never snowboarded before, then I definitely recommend you peruse through this book, especially the chapter on the first-time boarding, prior to your first trial, which can be traumatic to some.

FEBRUARY 20, 2000This book is a great tool for beginners as well as intermediate. Explains how things work in details and it's very easy to understand, the many images will help you visualize the tricks you want to learn. After reading this book I am in desperate need of snow. Snowboarding can be so addicting, this book will keep you fresh even if you have to wait until the next snowboarding season.ADDED: April 17th, 2005 (Many years later :))This book is a precious tool for understanding snowboarding. I'm sorry one reader here believes snowboarding books are useless, but it is not so (I wonder if he posts negative comments for all snowboarding books). I am a certified upper level snowboard instructor with national freestyle accreditation and I believe there is much to learn from books. My roommate has been riding for 15 years and kept saying nobody needs a lesson until we got to ride together and I pointed out all the bad habits he had picked through the years which were detrimental to his higher level riding. There is much to be learned from a book. This doesn't mean a book can substitute a on-hill lesson, but it is a great complement and Kevin Ryan does a superb job at explaining all things related to snowboarding in a manner that makes sense. As a matter of fact I'm writing a snowboarding book myself, but it is more of a technical manual on how to teach snowboarding for other instructors and I hope many will pick ideas that will help them improve the quality of their lessons. Kevin's book was my first snowboarding book and it helped me a lot, providing enthusiastic views, in moving from beginner to a professional playground.ADDED: Sept. 21, 2012More years have passed and I'm still teaching snowboarding (at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort). I've gained a few more certifications since last time I edited this review and I still believe that good books are essential to improving. After all, us instructors do get our knowledge from written material as well.

A friend swears by this book. We got it and were not disappointed. Great detailed instructions and detailed illustrations. Just wish you could get a digital copy of this book on kindle.

Its very informative and easy to read book. Packed full of tips and tricks to up your snowboard game. Cant recommend enough!

I should begin this review with an admission of some bias. As a student in the MICA Information Visualization MPS program I was fortunate to have the author (Andy) as an instructor, and I was a fan of his website visualisingdata.com for some time prior. My fellow students and I — a mixed bag of designers, data wranglers, and the data curious — loved his course, soaking-up the practical wisdom and using it to reorient our approach to our work. I hoped this book would capture the substance of those lessons, and I wasn't disappointed.Andy fills a distinct and important niche in the sometimes overwhelming, multi-disciplinary realm of data visualization. He has built a portable, scalable mental framework to help both aspiring and practicing data visualizers navigate the dozens of decisions they will encounter in their work. One of Andy's strengths is his ability to walk the line between theory and practice. In the book, he calls dataviz a "game of decisions" and then, in his reassuring-but-methodical style, he prepares you to make sound choices when facing those tough, real-world decisions — whether they're related to data, story, or design. For me, the emphasis on process (chapters 2 through 5) is the most valuable part of this comprehensive and eminently useful book; the fundamental practices ("hidden thinking") that shape and steer great visualization work, much more than the latest whiz-bang technology.I would recommend this book to those who are new to data visualization as a solid primer and template for developing their work process, but also to working visualizers who want to get back to basics in order to strengthen their process, decision-making, and problem solving.

My Cred: I'm employed as a professional specifically for data visualization and I have read many books on the topic, from design to science, to practical stuff, to writing code, and then just theory. This resource is good for beginners and professionals. It does not contain code or technical how-tos (nor does it promise this), but it DOES promise to teach a method of design that is data-driven - and it delivers on this promise. When resources set themselves up with clear expectations and deliver, those resources get 5 star reviews from me.Part B I have found ESPECIALLY valuable in my time owning this as it goes over *ways to think* that can improve your visualization design process. Learning how to think about visualization design is quite hard, and is why I believe this book succeeds to meet the expectations it sets out.My second favorite part of this book is the short reference center in the middle (grey pages): This has a wide selection of helpful charts for different purposes, according to the shape and form of the data you are working with. I even encountered a couple charts I had never seen before!

Very clear and informative. This is a very good material for an undergraduate/graduate course. Straight to the point with focus on details. The only bad thing is that the kindle edition is not perfect (some images are bigger than the margins) but the printed version is flawless.

I got the online version, and it was extremely difficult to read. For a book that focuses on accessible visualizations, it struck me as odd that none of the visualizations in the book were interactive, or for that matter, legible.Other than that, the content of the book is good. I would just recommend getting the paperback format.

Among all the books I have read regarding Infographics and data presentation/design, this one provides the best mix of details and general overview.; not too much, not too little. I highly recommend.
