About the Author

Dr. J. Gordon Leishman holds the Minta Martin Chair of Engineering and is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. A former aerodynamicist at Westland Helicopters, Dr. Leishman has written extensively on topics in helicopter aerodynamics and helicopter technology. It presents an overview of recent rotor aerodynamic, acoustic and aeromechanical research and development and its application to the design of the overall vehicle, in simple and graphic terms that can be readily comprehended by people with little detailed knowledge of the helicopter.Accuracy has not suffered from the simplification process - the book's author, Prof Gordon Leishman, is one of the foremost researchers and experts in the rotorcraft field. He has used this expertise to explain the technology so that its logic is readily apparent. He also provides a very useful list of easily obtained references for deeper reading.But the book is much more than a guide to the technicalities of rotorcraft engineering, since it places the engineering and research topics into the context of the overall aircraft design and deals with how they affect the fundamentals of the vehicle's performance. The book contains a considerable amount of overall generalised performance data that gets to the core of what the helicopter is and what it offers to its customers and perhaps more important, what limits its performance and how its capabilities can be transformed by application of advances in technology.The book does not shirk from looking at the problem of how technology comes into being and is incorporated into the vehicle, either. The author reviews the success of recent trends in applying the technology to improving the vehicle and draws some uncomfortable conclusions. He then proposes strategies for improving results.As an engineer familiar with the field, I found this book very enjoyable and read it in one session. I discovered a few aspects of the subject that were new to me, but most important to me were the thought provoking questions on the development of the vehicle and the industry that the book raised.

This is a good book in learning about the many technical challenges that face the helicopter as an engineering system. A good amount of discussion shows the many tradeoffs and competing requirements which pose significant challenges in revolutionizing the helicopter. Attention is also given to our limited ability to understand the complex aperiodic nature of the flow, along with the complex interaction effects between the main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage. Next, the book discusses flow control methods along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) taking on a more active role in helicopter design and analysis. The book ends with the over-arching emphasis of setting realistic government goals that radically shifts the conventional way of thinking on how helicopters are made. About the Author

Kenneth R. Miller is Professor of Biology at Brown University. His research work on cell membrane structure and function has produced more than 50 scientific papers and reviews in leading journals, including CELL, Nature, and Scientific American. Miller is coauthor, with Joseph S. Levine, of four different high school and college biology textbooks which are used by millions of students nationwide. He has received 5 major teaching awards. In 2007 he was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received the Exploratorium's Outstanding Educator Award. He lectures widely and has appeared on NPR’s Science Friday and The Colbert Report.

If I were to recommend one popular book on evolution and creationism, this would be it. It is NOT just another critique of creationism and intelligent design (although it is very effective in this regard) but also offers a wider motivational analysis of the anti-evolutionists. The critique itself tends to be more technical than most, emphasizing DNA evidence.For example, some of the most convincing evidence is demonstrated by the genetic flaws of evolution. Although most mammals can synthesize Vitamin C, humans cannot and this is a clear disadvantage. Do we lack the gene for it? NO. We possess the GLO gene but it has been corrupted by mutations and no longer performs its task. Moreover, the gene is similarly corrupted in our closest relatives among the other primates! Intelligent design??Similar evidence is given in that humans have only 23 pairs of chromosomes whereas other primates have 24. And evidence of the awkward fusion of two pairs is shown to be very obvious.Echoing Daniel Dennett concerning Darwin and evolution, Miller wickedly comments “If I had to give a prize for the best idea that anyone in the antievolution movement has ever had, I’d award it to whomever came up with the term “intelligent design.”” He points out this term effectively masks what has historically been a religious appeal; moreover, it appeals to our hopes for purpose and meaning.But Miller makes a real effort to understand and sympathize with opponents. “Evolution strikes at the heart of who and what we are… Does evolution mean that we are nothing more than beasts?” Unfortunately, “it’s simply not a scientific question.” p 135So, could we simply give in and dispose of evolution? No. “evolution is … the glue that binds the biological sciences together.” p 195Miller sees a connection of intelligent design with post-modern critiques of the sciences, although the former is associated politically with the right, and the latter with the left. As Alan Bloom did in The Closing of the American Mind, he interprets the relativism of postmodernism as a fundamental attack on science and “the power of reason to seek truth.” Not so far from the aims of “intelligent design.”One quibble. IMHO the “quote” from St. Augustine on p 160-161is just too good to be true, too reminiscent of Darwin’s last sentence in The Origin of Species. Moreover, the reference to Only Six Numbers by Martin Rees ( p 103 in my edition NOT p 115 as cited) is a dead-end as Rees gives no reference. Couldn’t find it anywhere. If you find it, please comment.

Having read Dr. Kenneth Miller's wonderful book "Finding Darwin's God", I had high expectations for this book---and I was not in the least disappointed! I have already decided to purchase copies for my 3 sons, just as I did of "Finding Darwin's God". Having studied biology at MIT, and having taught college-level biology for 30 years, I found "Only a Theory" wonderfully interesting reading. It describes the intellectual/spiritual battle between "intelligent design" and evolution, reveals the weaknesses in ID's theory of "irreducible complexity", clearly presents irrefutable chromosomal/genetic evidence linking gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans to a common ancestor, and so much more! Dr. Miller's well-chosen examples and clearly-written explanations make it possible for anyone to understand the overwhelming evidence for Evolution, and yet he leaves open the possibility of faith.

Author and Professor of Biology at Brown, Kenneth Miller writes with passion about science, writes in the vernacular and in a style that is engaging to the reader.He first provides a background of science and how it was so compatible with the independence of the United States. With the old European social order discarded and an American one yet to be defined, Americans felt the freedom to explore and discover the mysteries of science as well as their frontiers. Science provided the basis for achievement based on individual creativity and industry, and Americans provided scientific discovery decade after decade.A competing phenomenon is the faith of Americans that he describes in a Harris poll of 2005 where most believe in evolution when asked if plants and animals evolved. It was all the more striking when people responded negatively to evolution when asked if humans evolved the same way. Sixty-two percent of the respondents disavowed evolution, leaving the United States with the highest percentage of non-believers in the industrialized world with the exception of Turkey. The Harris poll is the kind of reaction Charles Darwin expected when he wrote, "The Origin of the Species," which might explain why human development is not described anywhere in the book. Only at the insistence of a friend did he put those thoughts to publication years later.Professor Miller comes from a long list of distinguished scientists who felt that their work and results spoke for themselves. They refused to get in the political debate over intelligent design, leaving the Discovery Institute to champion I. D. not through observation and evidence in the laboratory but by making a full court press in the legislature and with school boards.The actions of the Kansas school board in 1999 where they introduced intelligent design, and again in 2005 where they attempted to redefine science, plus the trial in Dover, PA. prompted him to write this book and challenge the Discovery Institute and I. D. head on. The Washington based institute created a strategy that came to be known as the wedge document. It was a political strategy for not just competing with the theory of evolution but eventually suppressing it and supplanting it with intelligent design in the classroom. Their proponents used relativism as their tactic. All truth is relative, and is based upon what one believes.This is where Professor Miller's passionate writing goes into overdrive. In clear, non-scientific language he tells the reader about the Cambrian period in which there was an explosion of organisms that evolved in the millions of species that exist today. Vertebrate embryos in fish, frog, chick, and mouse bear a striking resemblance in structure that was uncovered through the science of molecular genetics. Skeletal bones bear a striking resemblance between fish, bird, or human proving Darwin's theory that animals branched out into different species where many withered on the vine of extinction while other branches survived, changing constantly to keep up with an ever-evolving environment. The development of the eye, long a contention of the I. D. faithful, or so-called proof of a designer's complexity showed how the law of optics was driven by natural selection. Kenneth Miller also takes on Martin Behe's contention of "irreducible complexity" just as he did at the trial in PA showing how such organisms could adapt and change with the loss of one or more of their component parts. As designers have advocated, enzymes are highly specific, and cannot adapt or change because of the chemical compounds they process. This was debunked with nylon, whose compounds remain. Bacteria in these ponds of nylonase did exactly that; they evolved and fed off the nylon waste with perfect adaptation. One commentator was kind enough to write me, "I guess we just have to wait around a few million years, eh [for proof of macroevolution]. And meanwhile just accept those are true based on -- faith...." Actually, no we won't, and we have more than just faith. "We already know enough about the mechanisms of evolutionary change to account for the large-scale changes that produce genuine novelty," according to the author.Kenneth Miller brings his full weight of knowledge and intellect against intelligent design. Adaptation of light sensitive cells (for eye development) is proven. Evolution is only a theory? No, it's fact. Intelligent design in blood clotting is disproved. But his strongest argument against intelligent design as a science is its complacency that some things cannot be explained and as such should be attributed to an intelligent interventionist that cannot be explored, or should just be accepted as a supernatural phenomenon. To Miller, this is not a science but a dead end that brings discovery of medicine, naturalism, and who we are and where we came from to a dead end. Miller adds, if so many animals were intelligently designed, how come so many became extinct? Good question! But he admits that the greatest critics of evolution are scientists themselves. The "greatest hoax perpetrated on mankind in the past 150 years" according to Ann Coulter, Darwin's theory has been tested millions of times over in order to be proven wrong.The central fear of proponents of I. D. is that humans have no purpose, structure, conscience, or higher calling if they are the same as any other creature on earth. This Miller opposes sharply with an explanation that is almost spiritual. The human being could never be recreated in its present form if we returned to the Cambrian period millions of years ago and started over again. It was developed through the perfect timing of weather, fate, replication, and adaptation that made it what it is today, the most survivable organism on earth. Therefore, it has a purpose to guard its atmosphere and protect other species from their destruction by keeping the earth with all its atoms, compounds, and cycles in harmony with a fragile environment that is man's to save or destroy alone. I didn't have huge expectations for this inexpensive planner I was still disappointed. The cover is just cardstock which is thicker paper. It's shiny and the gold is not raised. It's part of the paper and is just printed on top. It's very cheap looking, even on the inside. I'll probably still keep it though because I like having the extra space for the task list. I bought the planner to track educational activities I do with my littles, and plan some work activities.

Where Is Easter Island?     It was Easter Sunday in April 1722. Jacob Roggeveen had been sailing for more than eight months. He was the commander of three Dutch ships. They were searching the South Pacific for parts of the world that had never been seen or explored. Roggeveen hoped to find a huge, legendary continent that many believed existed. It was called Terra Australis. Other explorers had searched parts of the South Pacific, but no one had found it yet, or mapped the area correctly.    That Easter Sunday, Roggeveen and his crew were a thousand miles from anywhere. Suddenly, they spotted land. What could it be? There was smoke rising in the distance, which meant people lived there. But what kind of people?    Some of the natives in the Pacific islands were peaceful and friendly. But others were not. Jacob Roggeveen had heard stories about cannibals! No one knew how his crew would be greeted by the islanders. Roggeveen decided it was better to wait until morning before he and his men went ashore. He named the island Paasch Eyland—the Dutch words for Easter Island—since that’s the day he had arrived.   The next morning, the weather was rainy—not the best time to put small boats into the water. And besides, his men were nervous. Maybe they should wait another day.   But natives on the island had seen the Dutch ships offshore and were eager to find out who these strange visitors were. So one of the island people got into a canoe. He paddled out to Roggeveen’s ship and climbed aboard. He was totally naked! He was also friendly and warmhearted. He danced and sang with the sailors. They played a violin for him and gave him small gifts, including a mirror and a pair of scissors. The man seemed so happy, he didn’t want to leave. They had to force him into his canoe to make him go back to the island. He motioned for them to follow.    It was several more days before the Dutch would finally set foot on the island. When they did, they found something amazing—something no one had ever seen or imagined.   Lining the beach were giant stone statues, as tall as three-story buildings. Some were twenty or thirty feet tall. Others were just huge heads, buried in the sand up to their necks.    How did the statues get there? Who carved them? The islanders had no modern tools. They had no carts with wheels. They lived in simple grass-covered huts. How could they possibly have carved these huge blocks of stone? How could they have moved such heavy pieces of stone at all?   Roggeveen saw only a few of the statues. He didn’t know there were more than nine hundred of them! They were scattered all over the island.   How they really got there, and why, is just part of the story—and the mystery—of Easter Island.     Chapter 1: Stranded on a Remote Island     Easter Island is in the middle of nowhere. If you look at a map of the world, the island is so tiny, it’s barely even a dot. Lost in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean, it’s more than two thousand miles west of South America. The nearest islands are the Pitcairn Islands—more than a thousand miles away. Easter Island is so far away from anywhere else, it’s hard to imagine how the earliest people ever found it.    So how did human beings discover the most remote island on earth?   No one is certain, but it is believed that about four thousand years ago, the people who lived in Taiwan began to spread out. They were searching for new places to live. Over many hundreds of years, they sailed from place to place throughout Southeast Asia. They took food and supplies with them and planted crops when they arrived. They formed new colonies on many of the islands in the South Pacific. Those islands are now called Polynesian islands. Hawaii, Tahiti, and New Zealand were also colonized this way.   But Easter Island was so far away, it was one of the last islands to be inhabited. Between 1,200 and 800 years ago, the first Polynesian people reached it and decided to live there. They probably came from Mangareva—an island more than a thousand miles away. Sailing in open double-hulled canoes, they braved the ocean waters. As many as twenty or thirty people crowded into each canoe. They brought with them chickens, bananas, sugar cane, and taro—a sweet root vegetable like a sweet potato.    The Polynesian people were excellent sailors. They knew how to use the stars to guide them and the ocean currents and winds to sail fast. Still, the trip to Easter Island took at least three weeks—maybe longer. When they finally found the island, they gave it a name, Te Pito o te Henua, which meant “the navel of the world” or “the end of the world.” Years later, they named the island Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui means “greater extremity” or “land’s end”—as in the end of the land—the farthest thing from anything else. The people who live on the island are called the Rapa Nui people, and the language they speak has the same name.   When the Polynesians arrived, they brought with them their customs and beliefs. They didn’t believe in gods. Instead, they thought that their ancestors—family members who had lived before them—had special divine powers. They believed that those ancestors could keep them safe, make food grow, and keep them healthy. They carved wooden statues of their ancestors and put them on stone altars. They didn’t worship them like gods, but they did perform special ceremonies to show their respect. Their living leaders were always the descendants—the sons—of these ancestors.    The island the first settlers discovered was covered in huge palm trees, at least ninety feet tall. It looked like a paradise. There was plenty of shade from the hot sun. The trees created a rain forest, too. Rain was important for drinking water, and to make the crops grow.    There was food for the first Polynesian settlers, too. They found millions of birds on the islands and hundreds of fish in the sea. Until the first crops grew, they ate fish, birds, dolphins, and birds’ eggs. Some of the birds were so tame, they would land on the islanders’ heads. For a while, the island must have been a lovely place to live.   But it wouldn’t be a paradise forever.   Within four hundred years, nearly all the trees on the island were gone. Without trees, the islanders had no firewood. They couldn’t build new canoes or grass huts. The sun beat down on the land, drying it out. Crops wouldn’t grow, because there wasn’t enough rain. The birds disappeared, too. It was hard to catch fish without canoes. Without new canoes, they couldn’t even leave!   The islanders were stranded.   What had turned this beautiful place into a parched, dry, miserable island? The answer was something the islanders may have brought with them when they sailed to Easter Island.   Rats!

I didn't realize this book was written for grade schoolers. The "A Companion to Easter Island" book was a much better purchase. Also checking the internet for videos was very helpful.

Prime example of EXCELLENT research and afrocentric writing of true African history. MUST READ!!

I'm enjoying reading it now. It's hard to look at African Americans now without being amazed at their ability to survive the ghastly experiences they're suffered.

Excellent history of Africa. I highly recommend this text.

Dr. Asantes work, as most of his writings on anything African, lacks depth. Granted, he is attempting to scan +6,000 years of African history (referring to the Badarian in Egypt up to the present time); however, none of his sources are among the main works cited by authors working on the time and space periods about which he writes. A review of his bibliography will show this (no citations of Tarikh as-Soudan or Tarikh el-Fattash, only now is Asante making his own translations from the glyphs, yet writes about Nubia without citing, or evening mentioning, major authors and excavations at key sites). In addition, there are numerous historical inaccuracies in the work, which are clear to anyone with a background in the areas about which he's writing, but will stand as truth to the un-initiated reader.What's left is an attempt to gloss over Africa as if it were one, mass, glorious entity, but without paying adequate attention to its complexities. Such is in fact a disservice to the groups he claims to be fighting for, as Asante refuses in the majority of his work, to engage primary source materials. This is done largely because he cannot. (Note the other review mentions his failure to "put the nail in the coffin" with respect to Obenga's classifications of African languages; Asante's work does not show that he was the depth and breadth of knowledge to grasp and comprehend this. Evidence of this comes simply in the fact that he does not produce similar work). One must, therefore, love and respect Dr. Asante for his passion for African people, but, in the same vein, detest his scholarship and all assumptions borne from it (as it is, in fact, not scholarly).Those looking for better works on Africa would be better served reading Diop himself (Precolonial Black Africa), Theophile Obenga or John Hunwick.

Asante does it again with this important work. He creates a new vision of Africa that is largely out of the realm of what we have been exposed to. This is a view of African history we would have received years ago in an intellectually just society. Well done!

This is more of a junior telling of the story than a true coloring book. Yes there are some story pages but there is a great deal of dialogue in the book. I think it would be a great gift for an Anne fan or for someone who wants to maybe color the book and give it as a gift. Say a parent who colors it and gives it to their child or the other way around.

When this arrived it was bent in several places. The cover was somewhat folded back at the bottom corner, so this was difficult to remove the creases.

So disappointing, not really for adult coloring so many words in it to, it is like a recap of Anne of Green gables with a few things to color.

Anne of Green Gables was one of my favorite books and movies so I am really enjoying following the story once again as I color the beautiful illustrations within. One can have so much fun with these coloring books for so little money! I highly recommend them!

I have so much nostalgia over Anne of Green Gables and I can't wait to color this wonderful book!

My 8 year old loves this book. A definite step up from kiddie coloring books, and the included text/story is a definite appeal. Definitely a "graduation" for her from more simplistic coloring w/ story books.
