Yep, in this book Kaitlin and Sky both grow up a lot. And just when you think things are going to get settled, they get worse. To me, this is the best book in the series, thus far. Why? Kaitlin has growing pains, but she doesn't have problems with Austin. And Austin is an awesome boyfriend. Better than ever before. And Family Affairs is going to go through a lot in this book and it's going to have an interesting denouement.

This is the third in a series of books about a fictional teen tv and movie star and what it's like to be an "it girl." I am an adult who is reading these books along with her 14-year-old sister. I enjoy the books. After she read this one, my sister said she thinks it's the best of the three. I can agree with that. One thing I like is that, as opposed to adult-oriented "hollywood insider" novels, this one shows the perks and strains of being famous and what it's like to be on the inside of the Hollywood machine without throwing in the coarse sex details and the jaded pessimism that comes of living in an image-obsessed, self-oriented society. So, I can recommend it. I give it five stars for being a success in its genre. It's a fun, non-challenging read that will make you appreciate being boring to the tabloids while making you wish you could get the spa visits and free gifts the celebrities get. It's fun.

My fourteen year old daughter received the first book in this series for Christmas and loved it. She has since downloaded the next two on my kindle. I had to wrestle it away from her to read my book. I am making her wait for the fourth book until our trip to Michigan, since she goes through them so fast. So, I would recommend any books for young adults that get them excited to read!

I've read other books by Sandra Kitt and have always liked her. This book doesn't even come close being as good as the other books Sandra Kitt has written (especially She's the One and The Color of Love). I felt that the story took way to long to unfold. The first half of the book seems to be devoted totally to not letting the story unfold. When things do finally start to happen it's toward the last third of the book. Once the story finally begins to move things seem to happen pretty quickly and events that should be devestating are wrapped up in just a few pages. I guess that is due to the characters in this book being amazingly resiliant and forgiving. Normally I would heartily recommend Sandra Kitt, but in the case of this book I say only read it if you are a devoted fan.

Great book. There were so many surprises. Surprises with her career and surprises with her "real" life. So good. But, this was not the best of Jen's books.

My 13 year old daughter is not much of a reader, but really likes this series and has asked me to keep buying each book after she finishes the last one.

This book is an enjoyable continuation of the series. More of the trials and tribulations of being a Hollywood star teen trying to live a "regular" life...for the most part. Funny story.

I highly suggest this book. It is heart touching i could put it down. Read this book ir youll be sorry

#452,404 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is the best balanced treatment of copyrights and patents I have seen. Unsurprisingly, it is also not very original to people who have been following a lot of the discussion on-line. The author unfortunately brings a frequently annoying (and often stupid, see mention that Jar Jar Binks is "blatantly racist" on page 77 of the paperback for example) academic Leftism to the text. Includes a good treatment of peer to peer file sharing and an excellent discussion of culture as a "living artifact" (NOT the author's term). Also, since it is 4 years old, it misses out on some newer issues that the author would have addressed since they bear directly on his thesis, like the Sony rootkit fiasco a couple of years ago.

Received as promised. Good Seller.

This is an excellent read for those seeking an idea of what the battle for the internet may be in the near future - freedom vs controlled. Rumors of governmental and business desires to control the internet are heard more and more. These rumors include a 'fairness' doctrine much like the proposed reintroduction of it for radio and TV.Anarchy (or freedom) on the internet has created a tool of immense importance to a free society. The desires to control the internet as set forth in this book indicate desires to control the flow of information by certain business and government interests, and thus create another means to control the masses for economic or political exploitation. The book provides an introductory discussion of what anarchy means and where is it derived. The book also provides a glimpse of the struggle of certain businesses to control certain uses of the internet for their economic gain by pursuing in some cases those that download music or other copyrighted material. This is a continuation of the author's earlier work. The book warns a controlled internet may lead to or sustain an increasingly police state type government where the masses are persecuted based on their on-line activity -- much like China is protrayed being in some news reports with help from some of the internet business heavy weights.Steve Levy's "Crypto" would be an excellent additional reading since it covers the American government's (especially the NSA's input) actions regarding cryptography and the internet during the 1990s.

The Anarchist in the Library is a good introductory text for those unaware or brushing up on the basic copyright, intellectual property, the internet, and technology issues that are playing out in the world. Vaidhyanathan gives a very good background on several of the major incidents that leads to the current state of world information systems and technologies without getting into academic jargon. Intellectual property cases like Napster and "The Wind Done Gone", corporations having too much intellectual property power, and a humanist view of cultural, ideological clashes make up the majority of the book. What this book ultimately offers is a starting point to talk about the direction of our information culture by discusses where we as a society have gone wrong. Since the publication of the book, there have been many new problems of technology/the internet that have become major issues: 3D printing; metadata mining (i.e. Edward Snowden and data mining); data dumping (e.g. Julian Assange's WikiLeak; Ashley Madison); and so much more. However, there are many salient points about the power of that the internet in conjunction with regulations (e.g. US Patriot Act, DMCA, etc...) have diminished privacy rights and have set precedence for corporations/organizations rather than "to promote the progress of science and useful arts": copyright holders are enjoying longer and longer copyright statuses on works that should have long been in the public domain; the fight to regulate rather than free comes from the fear of possible harm rather than actual good; and there is a distinct lack of understanding of what the public want from the future of information and technology systems. The reason that I gave one star off from my review is lack of coherency. The author writes in a very organic method with chapters divided into specific areas regarding information and the internet that is easy to read but his central theme of oligarchy versus anarchy (i.e. for authority vs. against authority) gives a very one-sided, extremist argument. Additionally, there is only one chapter that is dedicated to libraries with a handful of other mentions throughout the book so rather than "The Anarchist in the Library," the real title should be "Anarchists in the Internet." You really should not judge a book by its cover but in this case, the author should not represent a book by its title. The role of libraries, although certainly praise in the book, is (again) very one-sided where there is not a lot of new information presented that is available elsewhere. For a better understanding of the state of intellectual property (and technology) in libraries, there is the Intellectual Freedom Manual, EFF.net, and almost any writing by Lawrence Lessig. (The Comic Book League Defense Fund provides specific interest in comic books). For general information about intellectual property, see the Legal Information Institute housed by Cornell (https://www.law.cornell.edu/).

This is a book is on, the most unexpected subjects: Information anarchy in utopia, Information anarchy in dystopia and Information utopia? These insights are from an expert who visualizes the effects of hacking, cracking and whacking in the world in general. And how such a scenario creates chaos in libraries. See for instance, computer filters (p. 38), effect of total acces (121-122), and terrorism (118-120, 122).Contextually, this books sounds as a sequel to the earlier title by the same author, i.e., "Copyrights and Copywrongs." In considering structurally as a sequel, I am not in anyways special. Because, The Chronicle of Higher Education, in 2004, said it precisely in the following article: "In the Copyright Wars, This Scholar Sides With the Anarchists." (see: [...])Nevertheless, Anarchist in the Library adds value to the existing literature on safety, security, and emergency preparedness.Interestingly, The Anarchist in the Library deals with clashes and the limits of freedom in a world that continues to converge - in electronic, media and digital domains. The Anarchist in the Library is a good reading for policy makers to consider issues in public governance in a situation that is loaded with smart-internet, as well as, friendly-access environment.

Great planner. Makes you want to get on the road

I gave this book as a Christmas gift for a couple who travel and are anticipating eventual radical life changes. They are enjoying randomly picking a page to think about.

I used this book for 3 separate Christmas Gifts. Everyone that received it was very happy with it.

Interesting... i was expecting something more but it's ok

Gave it as a gift, the recipient enjoys it very much and plans to visit and conquer many of the places and things in this book.

Gift

Another visually beautiful book by the Lonely Planet people. This one breaks up time into units: minute, hour, day, week, etc., and the premise is to savor every moment of life, try to do things that mean something experience-wise in a lifetime. The book presentation is exquisite. It's a heavy-duty, coffee table book filled with beautiful imagery and layouts. Visually stunning and high quality. But as content goes, other than the visual beauty of the final product, I felt a bit let down. What I thought (wanted) it to be was a book of encouragement to seize the day and it does that to some degree. But it also bordered on preachy (don't waste your life by not doing something exciting every minute of every day) and seemed aimed at a particular generation (definitely a younger crowd) when it could have easily been a book for everyone of any age. Timeless is always better. I look at old National Geographic magazines from the 1950s that belonged to my dad and every issue could easily be about the world today. They could take a lesson or two from National Geographic enterprise. One thing I think they really did wrong was to list specific restaurants and establishments in various cities "not to miss." What this does is make this book dated (although I did like the page on the Negroni). They should talk about the customs and specialties of the regions without mentioning specific restaurants. All this does it make the information trendy. It should be about the people and the specialness of the location and what the larger takeaway is from the culture. It shouldn't be about a restaurant or bar that just happens to be the hot spot today. That one section really ruined the book's overall appeal for me.Perhaps this might be a good book for a college grad who is at the stage in life where trends and excitement matter more than people do. But for a more mature crowd (over 35), this is just a pretty picture book of what the younger generation thinks is important today.

More text than pictures. We prefer to the Readers Digest and National Geographic travel books that have vibrant pictures to this one.

Both the means and the reasons for writing a thesis or article or book are socially structures by the organization of graduate study, the requirements for publication, and the conditions for promotion, and the pressures arising from these situations create the writing style so often lampooned and lamented.

Becker's message for his readers is to set aside their fears, relax, and do it. As unimpressive as that advice may sound, it is laid out in very modest, clear, practical terms and, like all good analyses, it is hard to implement because it goes to the heart of the matter and questions the assumptions that guide people's writing practices, mostly without them realizing it. It helps that Becker has been grappling with similar problems for 30+ years as a writer, teacher, and editor. I will try to give a bullet list of what I took away from the book. That fails to do justice to the book, predominantly for two reasons: Firstly, the proof is in the pudding. If Becker is critical of citation practices, his own relatively short bibliography is rich and thought-provoking. Secondly, he has a knack for situating the problem in its context. Along the way, he appears to sociological gems of analysis like the dichotomy between head and hand, "the corruption of indicators," "pluralistic ignorance," etc. Some of the conclusions are a little too quick, but, overall, this is quality sociology applied to a common problem. Some of the practical advice:- What if I cannot organize the chaos of my thoughts in the form of an attractive product that I can then "export" to my readership? This concern rests on a misleading dualism between thinking and writing, where writing is understood as the product of thinking rather than a process of thinking in its own right. Students tend to believe that, unlike them, adept writers simply sit at their desks and transcribe their perfectly orchestrated thoughts into well-structured compositions in one go. The dualism also blinds us to the complexity of the writing process and the different demands of, say, a first vs. final draft.- Like accents, people's writing style gives away the kind of person they want to be. Classy locutions mostly have a ceremonial, rather than a semantic, purpose and, by dropping them, your writing gains clarity and loses pretense. "To overcome the academic prose, you have to overcome the academic pose." Writing style can also signal allegiance to a theory or school.- Experiment with ritualistic behavior when writing. While it may be interpreted as neurotic and obsessive, crazy habits that you stick to can help relieve stress, especially in a process such as writing where you do not, however much you wish, exert total control over the product.- Write first drafts "quickly and carelessly" precisely because you know you will be returning to revise it multiple times later.- Collect pre-fabricated parts of text for use in the future if it sounds intuitively promising and remotely related to your research interests.- Be frugal with your bibliography and citations. A bibliography was originally supposed to be about specific further information that the reader might find useful if your research interested them. For instance, a book that contains information in a generally similar area is not a good candidate for inclusion in your bibliography.- Choose your metaphors judiciously. Trite and tired metaphors such as "a body of literature" do not mean much unless you are willing to say what the heart, brain, and other organs of that body map to in your metaphor. Otherwise, it is superficial, lacks seriousness, and is best left out. Metaphor, in this sense, is "a serious theoretical exercise," not a literary device to make your prose sound more flowery. This advice, obviously, does not apply to metaphors that are permanently built into our language.- "Evasive beginning"s that are so common in scholarly writings are misleading and risk confusing the reader, if not the author. Rather than being suspenseful and Conan Doyle-ish, tell your reader where you are headed in the beginning. This does not mean that evasive, vacuous, almost meaningless sentences cannot be used in early drafts. On the contrary, committing to words can help you crystalize your thoughts in an iterative process. But such sentences have to be flagged and revised before you get your writing out the door. Some of the insights (greatly expanded on in the book):- Verbosity and "bulls*** qualifications" that shun explicit specification arise because writers want to avoid attributing causality or agency. Unnecessary words occur because writers want to hedge and avoid big claims or sound profound.- Abstract words sometimes mean nothing in themselves, but "mark a place that needs a real idea." General words such as "relationship" or "complex" are good cases in point.- The stories you can/choose to tell are more important than the theories you use to explain them.- Rules are never as clear and unambiguous to have only one interpretation. This means there are no absolute rules for editing and the process is largely done "by ear."- An outline might help in the early stages, but only if there is a dynamic interaction between it and the text. Writing frequently sends the author back to the drawing board.

I bought the first edition of this book about 20 years ago and found it very helpful. I long ago misplaced my copy and so was happy to order the new second edition. On reading the book again, I found Becker's advice to be as good as I remembered, but I was disappointed that he had made so few changes in the "second edition." Essentially, the first edition has been reprinted verbatim--even typos weren't corrected--with a relatively few pages of additional material added to the last two chapters. Chapter 9 now contains Becker's general thoughts on recent software that he considers useful to writers. This discussion would have been more helpful if he had been willing to mention specific programs. I guess he decided not to either to avoid giving free advertising or to avoid dating the discussion. The last chapter gives some interesting, if brief, observations on the place of writing in modern academic life.In short, if you already have the first edition, there's not much point in buying the second edition. If, on the other hand, you haven't encountered this book before and you would like some useful tips on academic writing, it's well worth the price.

Reading this for one of my classes. Wish I had read it in the first semester of my doc program. Would have saved me some stress and many hours of writer's block. Academic writing can be very intimidating. Becker does a great job making us see that we're not alone in our insecurity & quirks about writing. This book and its themes are timeless.

Here Becker offers a series of essays about various aspects of the academic writing process, and the life of the academic while all of this is going on. Part writing and life skills advice, part cautionary tale in how the whole process might get off track, part encouragement for the newer writer, this is an interesting supplement to one's writing project--and perhaps an interesting piece to read while one is going through a phase of classic avoidance behavior (we all do it).

My son-in-law is writing his undergraduate thesis (his school actually requires a thesis to graduate with a B.A.). I was attracted to the title based on his and my daughter's strong interest in sociology (her major) and their relentless research into why people do the things they do. He was thrilled with the book and feels like it will help him.

Professor requested

this textbook was good for my class

This booked changed the way I write. It is full of lessons/stories that compare how I previously thought an "intelligent writer" should write (or sound) vs. producing an easy to read document absent of the "academic fluff"...It is very beneficial as I worked my way through a graduate school grounded in social science.

Amazon.com Review

If you fear you might go on a rampage if you hear the lyrics to "Wheels on the Bus" even one more time, take heart: These reimagined, "silly dilly" lyrics can breathe new life into kid favorites like "Wheels," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and even "Bingo." Just as they did with Take Me Out of the Bathtub, Alan Katz and David Catrow lampoon the classics with rowdy humor and fun-to-sing rhymes. "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands"? Nope. Try "He's Got the Whole Beach in His Pants." "Frere Jacques" becomes "I'm a menace" and you can forget about old McDonald and his farm--that tune now tells the story of "My friend Donald's catfish parm." Katz wisely keeps the lyrics from straying too far into bathroom territory, keeping the fun both palatable and genuinely funny, and illustrator Catrow (Plantzilla, Santa Claustrophobia) again proves an indispensable member of the team, with wry details and memorable characters. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-5-As a follow-up to Take Me Out of the Bathtub (McElderry, 2001), Katz packs the same child-appealing humor into sadly sloppy lyrics that don't scan with the well-known tunes he has tried to fit them to, and which go on far too long. "I Always Lose" (to the tune of "Skip to My Lou") starts with the loss of a parka, backpack, and tuba, and continues, "Turned around, lunch box was gone/Could've sworn I had a hat on/There's no sign of baby bro Ron/He's a pain, but he's darling." "No Medication" (to the tune of "Down by the Station") does what most kids dream of doing: "No medication/Don't care what the doc says/Won't put that stuff in my belly/Tastes bad, you know/Mom sticks it in ice cream/Thinks that she can fool me/I flick it out the window/Look out below!" Unfortunately, the lyrics are even more awkward and less funny when read aloud instead of sung. Catrow's over-the-top, zany, mixed-media cartoons may pull readers into this collection that promises fun, but only delivers frustration.Nina Lindsay, Oakland Public Library, CACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

came in great shape, and can't wait to read to my Grandsons!

One of my kids favorite books. Super silly rhymes. It may take you a bit to figure out the rhythm of each song, but once you do, you and your kid will be hooked!

Great book!

Such unique songs to familiar tunes. My daughter's family is very musically inclined and I told her I wanted this book and others that I wanted it back! Haven't seen it since! My grandson was singing anything/everything to the tune of Twinkle Little Star, so hopefully this opened his musical arrangement creations.

This is wonderful book for family sharing. It takes old songs, and gives them hilarious new lyrics. "I'm still here in the bathtub" is sung to the tune of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". Some kids might not know the older song, and that's a good excuse for adults to join in!

I must have been in a hurry when I ordered this and thought I was getting a CD along with the book, so I was very dissapointed to find no CD. My fault after reviewing my order. So beware you may only be getting a book.

These books are so much fun!!! Some times you have to sing the tune in your head a time or two before you get the phrasing right. Kids love to think of some of their own lyrics also.

This was the second silly dilly songs cd I purchased for my 3yr old niece. She loves it. I personally like the first "Take me out of the bathtub" cd better. The songs on "I'm still here in the bathtub",are to the same tunes as the first cd. I would recommend this cd if you already have the first one and the kids are tired of the same old songs.

SPARK DISCHARGE (1997) by Edward M. Bazelyan and Yuri P. Raizer is an advanced text, requiring the reader to be well-grounded (pun intended) in calculus and electro-physics. Despite its broad title, the authors have sharply focused on the mechanism of the initiation and development of the spark discharge, which has not been so rigorously studied before. The mature, fully-formed spark or arc is mentioned only in passing, but one form or another of it may be found amply described in numerous other books, including a related volume by the same authors: Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection (2000), reviewed below. A further concentration is on the initiation of ultra-long discharges. Above a few megavolts, the lengths of individual discharges (in air) no longer have a direct relationship to the applied voltage or the proximity to nearby conducting surfaces, often traveling over a hundred meters horizontally only a few tens of meters above the ground, aptly illustrated by the photograph found on Page 4. Unfortunately, this is the only detailed picture of these spectacular artificial lightning bolts – the rest of the photographic illustrations are highly-technical close-ups, analyzing the details of the initial-discharge process. This is the main strength of the book – a microscopic examination of the mechanisms of the electrical breakdown of gases that allow the development and propagation of “superlong discharges”, as the authors refer to them.- * - Another strong point is the author’s repeated emphasis on the shortcomings of existing research data, that of their own as well as others’. This arises from the difficulties of controlling all the variables, so that there are differing results of apparently-similar or even apparently-identical experiments. They take great pains to describe the practical elements of the physical setup that affect its performance, such as the dependence of gap breakdown on the risetime and duration of the applied voltage being difficult to reproduce consistently, because of the effect the discharge-inception current has on the output voltage of the high-voltage source, not to mention the day-to-day changes in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and humidity. Each experimental setup is rigorously studied for sources of error. For a spherical electrode of radius r at a voltage U suspended by a thread over a plane electrode, the maximum electric field, E, is reduced by 5% compared to the theoretical value (U/r) even if the thread’s radius is only 1% of the sphere’s.- * - An important feature of the book is the many photographs that were taken with an electron-optical image converter, a vacuum-tube device that produces extremely short exposures, as small as a fraction of a nanosecond, and intensifies faint light sources by thousands of times. This apparatus is briefly described in the text, and it allowed the authors to capture sharply time-resolved images of the constantly-changing faint streamers and leaders that were available by no other means. The EOIC consists of an optical lens that focuses an image of the discharge on the converter’s flat photocathode (located at one end of the converter). The photocathode emits a quantity of electrons proportional to the intensity of the light striking the photocathode at each point of the image. These electrons are accelerated and focused on an electronic shutter that controls the exposure time. Finally, the electrons admitted through the shutter are further accelerated and deflected to form a visible image on a fluorescent phosphor screen at the opposite end of the converter, similar to the CRT used in older televisions, except that the entire image is processed and displayed all at once, not raster scanned as in TV. This glowing image is in turn photographed with a conventional film or digital camera.- * - The authors’ thesis provides an explanation of the ability of superlong discharges to span gaps far in excess of that predicted by the breakdown voltages measured for short gaps and lower voltages. The dielectric strength of dry air at STP is about 30 Kv/cm, as measured with sphere gaps using up to hundreds of kilovolts. This would extrapolate to a one meter gap for 3,000,000 volts, but in reality, it has been observed jumping well over a hundred meters. A graph of gap-distance vs. breakdown-voltage would have been useful here, showing the divergence of the unimodal relationship above whatever megavoltage the authors have determined from their research. A grossly-oversimplified description of the process (e.g. neglecting space-charge and some other effects) is that the discharge starts at the HV electrode, whose small radius concentrates the electric field to the point (~30 kv/cm) where the surrounding gas begins to ionize, forming a corona. Thin fingers (“streamers”) extend from the corona, but draw only a small ionic current because they have a high resistance. As they extend, new streamers branch repeatedly from the initial “stem”, each branch adding its tiny current to the (still very small) current in the stem, until finally the energy density in the stem portion is sufficient to ionize the air and significantly reduce its resistance. At this point, the branched streamer becomes a “leader”, and allows nearly the full electrode voltage U to appear at its tip, from which new streamers extend. As they branch in turn and their stems ionize, the leader advances behind them in a stepwise manner as the process is repeated, and possibly branches as well. Since the local field at the tip of leader is much more intense than the overall field from the electrode to the ground plane, the tip-field largely predominates in determining the direction of propagation. Since the tip-field extends transversely as well as longitudinally, the discharge can meander widely, almost at random, rather than immediately heading to the ground by the shortest route possible. The authors take almost 300 pages to explain the mechanism properly, thoroughly, and going into exquisite detail at each step of the process. From them, I learned of a phenomenon of which I was previously unaware. In a normally-illuminated laboratory, I had thought that the hissing and sputtering I heard near an overvoltage-protection sphere gap on a 47 KV 60 Hz transformer was from a simple corona effect. But when I now observed it with all the lights off, I saw the play of thin pale blue streamers between the spheres as described by the authors, never developing into a short circuit because their resistance was too high. Or almost never – perhaps the rare arc-over was from a leader developing rather than an overvoltage spike reflected back from the load.- * - The book is well-written. L.N. Smirnova’s English translation of the authors’ Russian causes no problems for the reader, in spite of an occasional “quaint” word usage and sentence structure (“…but sometimes it [the filamentary discharge] allows the researcher to admire it for a long time…”), and with only a few grammatical errors or typos (e.g. “…rises up…”) that are found just as often in the work of American authors. The Table of Contents spans four pages and is logically organized to rapidly guide the reader to the desired information, although the section on experimental equipment and techniques is located in the middle of the book, rather than at the more conventional beginning or end. The 4-page Index is not quite so useful, as it is missing direct alphabetic entries for some significant terms like “ultracorona”, which is listed under “corona, ultracorona”, and there are no entries at all for terms like “arc” or “arc flash”, “ionization region” etc. To their credit, the authors are consistent in italicizing the first use of such terms in the body text. Minor variations in regional usage are easily decoded: the authors use of “stepwise leader” instead of “stepped leader” for instance. Other terms, such as “descending current-voltage characteristic” is often better known as “negative resistance coefficient” The line drawings, graphs, schematics, and tables, are all well-rendered, and present the concepts in a satisfactory manner.- * - Depending on the reader’s educational background and particular field of inquiry, Spark Discharge by itself may suffice to answer all their questions. For a less-advanced individual, an additional, more basic text may be required to help them understand the electro-physical concepts that are presented here with little or no explanation. But this volume, combined with the one reviewed below, certainly was adequate for my needs in writing a treatise on the dangers of side-flashes from the grounding conductors of lightning protection systems, where the cable’s inductive impedance, even more than its resistance, can raise its potential at a few meters above the ground to millions of volts. This represents a very real, but often unrecognized, hazard for persons standing within reach of electricity’s leaping abilities – abilities that I now understand much more thoroughly.- * - I found two other reviews of this book on Amazon. The second, briefer one, stated that the text was short on equations and derivations and was more of an overview. I found exactly the opposite – each section went deeply into the underlying elecrto-physics, complete with derivations and the math to back them up. The only brief overviews were on topics beyond the scope of the book, such as natural lightning. More importantly, the authors point out whenever more research is needed. The first, longer, review commented on the non-standard form of the presentation, and while I agree with this description, I did not find it a particular problem.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIGHTNING PHYSICS AND LIGHTNING PROTECTION (2000) by Edward M. Bazelyan and Yuri P. Raizer clearly shows its parentage, with “stepwise leaders” developing from “streamers”, but it is far more than a simple remake or reboot of Spark Discharge (1997). Like their earlier book, it is an advanced text, requiring the reader to be well-grounded (pun intended) in calculus and electro-physics. However, the final section on lightning protection is more practical and down-to-earth, and can be understood without all the math as long as the reader has grasped the basic concepts. This book deals with the mature, fully-developed discharge in the form of natural lightning. About 200 pages explain the initiation of the lightning discharge, using research from the authors’ earlier work, but they take pains to modify it from Spark Discharge’s 300 pages covering laboratory artificial discharges, to insure that it applies to the much longer and more powerful natural bolts. They also carefully point out that the results from the smaller artificial discharges cannot simply be scaled up to hundreds-of-times longer lightning, and they detail the assumptions they made to modify their earlier findings. This is the best that anyone can do at present, because lightning cannot be had to order, nor studied and photographed with electron-optical image converters from a few feet away. They do include tests run on lightning “triggered” with small rockets trailing several hundred feet of thin wire, but even these do not provide enough data for a complete understanding. There are still gaps in our knowledge of lightning that even it cannot jump.- * - Lightning protection is handled in the authors’ unique style. It is not oriented to specific hardware or systems, but rather a description of the various components and how they interact with the lightning voltage and current. The reader will have to do some thinking to assemble a practical lightning protection system from the wisdom in this book, but it will be far better than off-the-shelf equipment hooked up by rote. The most interesting…no, fascinating, part for me was the authors’ explanation of lightning’s capricious, or even “mischievous” behavior, exemplified by the striking (pun intended) photo on Page 21 of lightning hitting an all-metal television tower more than 600’ below its tip. This is not an unusual case, and the bane of lightning-protection-system designers everywhere. Early experiments with lab-generated lightning, and scale model buildings and power lines, quickly proved unrealistic because natural discharges are two to three orders of magnitude longer, and bridge the gap by a somewhat different mechanism. Even today, there are texts that still refer to the “cone of protection” created by a lightning rod, or “tenting” from an overhead guard wire. More enlightened tutorials use the “rolling-sphere” method, which curves the straight surfaces of the “cone” and “tent” inward, reducing the protected volume. But this protection is only statistical – the occasional bolt will still penetrate this “shield”. The reason for this ability of lightning is complex, but well-described by the authors. As the nascent bolt descends from the clouds in the form of a stepwise (or “stepped”) leader, it carries the cloud’s potential with it, increasing the strength of the electric field on the grounded objects below. Eventually, opposite-polarity “counterleaders” arise from tall, narrow, structures or trees and stretch upward. [Note that many other texts use the term “upward streamer” for the mature form of this discharge, although the initial streamers need to evolve into a leader in order to allow the ground charge to flow up them.] They usually connect to the downward leader some hundreds of feet above the ground, at which point the “return stroke” starts. Note that the term “return stroke” does not imply an immediate reversal of the current flow between could and ground, but only that the brightening of the lightning channel proceeds upward as the previously-deposited channel charge begins to move downward from the point of connection. A similar effect is seen in a line of vehicles starting up as the traffic signal changes from red to green: the vehicles move forward, but the point of beginning of motion propagates rearward. The photo on Page 263 alone is worth the price of the book. It shows an unconnected 300’ forked counterleader emanating from the top of the same television tower, while a lightning bolt completely “ignores” it, passing within 50 feet as it strikes the tower well below the tip. This, more than any written words, shows the fallacy of the “deflector-shield” concept of lightning protection systems, or attempts to develop special air terminals that promote the formation of counterleaders as a means of increasing their effective height. Percentage protection is the best one can do, but Thor and Zeus sometime beat the odds.- * - The book is well-written. L.N. Smirnova’s English translation of the authors’ Russian causes no problems for the reader, in spite of an occasional “quaint” word usage and sentence structure (“Buildings of such a height can be said to fire lightning sparks up at the clouds rather than to be attacked by them.”), and with only a few grammatical errors or typos (e.g. “This often happens in heap [sic] rather than clouds carrying a relatively small electric charge.”) that are found just as often in the work of American authors. The Table of Contents spans four pages and is logically organized to rapidly guide the reader to the desired information. The 4-page Index is also extensive enough to be useful. A number of small black-and-white photographs of lightning strikes clearly show the characteristics being discussed, and some of the close-up EOIC pictures from Spark Discharge are included in the section on the initiation of the lightning discharge, with the caveat that the laboratory streamers and leaders may not be exactly the same as the ones involved in starting the natural version. I have described the EOIC in the above review of that book, along with a brief overview of the discharge initiation and propagation mechanism for laboratory sparks. The line drawings, graphs, schematics, and tables, are all well-rendered, and present the concepts in a satisfactory manner.- * - I found two other reviews of this book on Amazon. Both were 5-Star, but extremely short and contained no specific information or appraisals.- * - Taken together, Spark Discharge and Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection provide the best, most microscopically-detailed view of high-voltage discharge electro-physics published to date.

I was expecting more deatils in terms of equations and derivations of the material. This book was kept to an overview. I was not impressed.

This book is not for begninners, but for someone who already knows the basic stuff. The material is presented in a very ad-hoc manner. The chapters and subsections do not follow the standard "say what you are going to say - say - and say what you said" format. New concepts are thrown at you with no lead or introduction. But the material is there. So it is a good reference book. This book can use a good editor.
