Buckle your seat belt, this is going to be long. About me: I am a mostly self-taught graphics manipulator that primarily used open source and free software before finding Creative Cloud. My biggest aversions to Adobe products in the past was the expense and the learning curve. This book GREATLY erases the second concern and I plan to purchase the rest in the series for CS6 after I'm finished! (Creative Cloud took away the first concern about the price of the creative suite software).If you've ever watched a Youtube video to learn how to do something with an image, this book is perfect for you. It really is a step-by-step guide for anyone new to InDesign, and graphics and page layout. For example, one of the tips in Chapter 3 explains how a placeholder frame with an x in it is traditionally used for graphics frames rather than text frames. It might feel like the classroom in a book is insulting your intelligence if you have used previous versions of InDesign. I don't know for sure as I have never used InDesign until yesterday (I'm on Chapter 4); I mostly used openoffice to export to PDF but the scope of my newest project of making a digital magazine made me look for a software title like InDesign where I could make what I call templates and they call masters.Each chapter is a tutorial in itself and the files you use as the examples are available even if you buy the Kindle version (which I did). I am reading it on my Kindle Fire as I'm working through the book on my laptop which is working well. I especially love that when there is an unfamiliar publishing term (like gutter, bleed, or pica) I can highlight, see the full definition and find out what it means exactly as my jargon is rusty. I like using the Fire to read the manual so I do not have to switch back and forth between screens on my laptop like I would with other tutorials. Before this project, the only layout experience I had was high school yearbook and limited exposure when I wrote for my college newspaper, all 10+ years ago. The tutorials in Classroom in a Book have clear written instructions but also visual aids for the step you are on with screen shots. It also has an overview for each mini-section inside of a chapter or lesson, review questions and the answers. I love the overview at the beginning of the mini-sections (what I'm calling the sections between each Save the File instruction when it feels you've reached a major point)! I'm a figure-it-out kind of learner, so as I progress in a chapter, I find myself reading the overview and seeing if I can accomplish it without needing the step-by-step guide. Then I use the step-by-step part to check my work!It does not have a section about general publication design, but I think that's outside the scope of this book since there is so much one can do with InDesign. I want to make a digital magazine, but another buyer might just want to make holiday cards for family and scrapbook pages for a website or a travel brochure. If you are new to design in general, I'd recommend reading about planning out the type of project you are working on. For example, for my magazine, I know to make a paper and pen sketch of the pages in the order I want them (where there's an ad, an article, the masthead etc.) and to have the pieces ready when I'm ready to start making the publication. This is classic work flow for publications, a lot like quilting but with deadlines and lots of coffee. The hardest part I'm having with the software is thinking in picas. From my web experience and other image manipulation projects, I think in pixels, and I'm still a little foggy on the conversion.If you are looking for a viable replacement of a class teaching InDesign, I would absolutely buy this book. I've already gifted two copies to the people who will be helping me with my magazine. And, if you are struggling with the lack of interactivity, I suggest you check out tv.adobe.com and watch a few videos on InDesign so you can "see" someone interact with the software much like an instructor would on the Smartboard or other interface in a college class. I did this before I found this book and was filling notebooks with the steps I was seeing and then trying them out on dummy projects. This book makes that process much easier! But watching the videos still helped me nail down the way the software interacts with you when you right click etc.I am very thankful this series is here and I don't have to pay for an expensive class to learn the basics that would have been easily ten or more times the cost of the Kindle version. So thank you, Adobe!

This series is a tremendous waste of money. You'd think that "Classroom in a Book" would mean "If you read this book you'll learn how to use the software." Not even close. You would also think "If I have a question I'll be able to look up the answer." Not remotely true. This is actually a CD of sample projects with which you can follow along to see how they were created, in case you want to do something similar. The book is commentary on those sample projects. But if you want to learn how to do something specific, or look up how to use a certain feature, this book is useless. Many of the software features aren't even listed in the index.Shortly after my purchase I had a long chat with an Adobe rep about my concerns regarding this product and he promised "I will go ahead and escalate the case to our relevant team who would be able to review this chat and get back to you with an appropriate resolution." They never contacted me. And while I was waiting to hear back from them, the return window expired, so now I have a very expensive paperweight. I am extremely disappointed in Adobe.

I give this book 4 stars because I am very impressed with the way it was put together. I'm an old PageMaker user and I really did not know what to expect. I assumed that my work with PageMaker wouldn't help me much, and I was right. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn InDesign CS6 in the fastest way possible. The reason I didn't give it that 5th star, is probably more about me than it is about the book. The tutorials were fun, and I'm not sure, but I suppose it covers the basics of everything InDesign CS6 has to offer. There were only a few places where I had to go back over an exercise when I did not get the results shown in the book; and in every case, it's because I missed a sentence, or it didn't register at the time I read it the first time. This is not a criticism by any means, but for me, after reading the book and doing the exercises, I'm embarrassed to admit that I still don't feel like I can jump in and create a work of my own. The samples are superb don't get me wrong, but the next time the writers might throw in a chapter or two that starts you with absolutely nothing and teaches you how to design your own creation from scratch--no graphics, no text, no borders and no guides. Just a blank screen with nothing to work with but your mouse and the keyboard. Maybe it will all come back to me as I begin to create my own work. In conclusion, you can't go wrong with this book. Everything you need is in there, but you'll have to use your own imagination to start using the product. I can envision myself pouring back through the pages to try and remember, "Now, how did they do that?" Skip the Kindle version, you simply have to have the graphics in front of you to do the exercises.

I recently upgrade from Adobe CS2 to CS6. So much has changed since CS2 that I had to practically start over again learning all the software. I bought almost all the CS6 Web and Print books. I found this one to be the best. I hated the CIB Dreamweaver book but this one was well written and stepped me through just about everything. I was completely up to speed with CS6 after reading this book. However, Adobe has a great training site and you can download lessons for free. This is a great book to teach you InDesign as it steps you through how to use everything but if you don't want to spend the money, go to Adobe's site for free tutorials you can download and print out. What I don't like about the Classroom in the Book series these days (I have been using Adobe software for over two decades and buy a CIB book every few upgrades when things change drastically) is that they don't treat you like a beginner. They assume you should have used the software at some point already. I think a beginner can still do well with this book though. I have looked at many other software books over the years and find the Classroom in a Book series to still be the best.

Purchased: June 28, 2016Expected/Actual Arrival: July 5, 2016I was so happy when I was able to get the actual book instead of reading it online. This is a great series and after I watched the anime I immediately checked if there was a manga about it and I was very happy to see that there was. This is one of my favorite series because the person who actually made Haikyuu!! Was into horror and comedy making this volume have funny parts and turning around to have a more ‘scary’ part. I would recommend this to anybody who loves comedy because it is almost full of it, people who have seen the anime, and people who like volleyball in general.

Haikyuu!! is amazing. I'm fully caught up with Haikyuu!! as I read chapters as they are released every week. The manga starts off slow but gets better and better and better. I can't really think of a way to describe how good the manga is, it's better in my opinion than the anime, you definitely pick up more details than in the anime. The anime excels in other ways but I'll leave that up to you to find out. If you're on the fence about sports manga in general, I encourage you to try Haikyuu!! regardless, I too was in a similar position but I have changed my mind these past few months.

Came 2 days earlier than expected! This series is a lot of fun--the characters are all interesting and you really grow to like and respect them. Before getting into this series, I wasn't particularly interested in volleyball (or sports in general), nor did I know a single thing about it. I believe that goes to show that the story itself and characters really pull you in, even if you have no prior knowledge of volleyball, like myself! Plus there's plenty of laughs along the way, this is easily one of the most lighthearted, funniest manga I've read, which can be a nice release at times. I'm very excited for the release of the next few volumes, and am happy to support this series!

The volume came in perfect shape, not bent or ruined in the delivery process. I preordered this volume and got it on the release date as well. The volume itself is a great read, something I definitely recommend. The story plot wise is written in a way that gets the reader into the story, wanting to find out more about the characters and the team as a whole. Haikyuu!! is a 10/10 recommend from me for anyone who loves team spirit and volleyball.

I was so happy to see that Haikyu!! was going to be serialized in the US. It's got to be one of the best sports mangas I've ever read! It's light, and really gives those good feeling feels.

When I first started hearing about media queries and adaptive or responsive website design (I believe I heard about these techniques through Website Magazine), I had no idea where to turn to learn them but I knew I needed to jump on it! But after 'looking inside the book' via Amazon and reading more reviews about it from others; I was sold. It shipped fast and with a thoughtful letter from the author and I read it cover-to-cover within a couple of days just like a good novel. I keep all of my design and development books for later reference, so this is definitely one I will be referring back to as I begin to build my first fully responsive and adaptive website. Mobile internet use is so huge now; I'm glad I didn't wait any longer to get this book. A great read for any designer - freelance or agency! :)

I once kept an octopus in a sea water aquarium. For the week that I kept her, she spent all her time watching every move that I made. Every night even though I piled the aquarium with plywood heaped with books and anything heavy, she would crawl out and I would find her on the rug the next morning. Thinking she was dead, I would scrape her into a dustpan and put her back in the aquarium where she would come to life -- unhappily. She had so much impact on me that by the end of the week I knew I had to put her back in the ocean. Her huge consciousness had made me feel small and stupid for trying to keep a creature that could make itself felt that way in a small aquarium. This happened in the '60's but I never forgot her and I have ever since been crazy about octopus (and cuttle fish). We have so consistently underrated the creatures we share the world with that this was a wake up call for me. For awhile, I wanted to be a marine biologist but I knew I wouldn't want to spend my time killing and cutting up living creatures to "scientifically" study them. If rats don't take over, than surely the octopus will once we are gone. Oh, yes, and I LOVED THIS BOOK and the woman who wrote it.

I felt the editorial reviews were misleading. They raved about this book. And while I was thrilled with the first half of the book since I was learning about octopuses, I was very positive about this reading experience initially. But then the author got into her scuba diving excursions and her relationships with other divers and I felt rather cheated. I thought the book was about the life style and physiology of the octopus, not about her scuba diving misadventures and relationships with other divers. I wonder if the folks who wrote the editorial reviews actually read her entire book. It was a disappointment to me.

I was certain I would love this book having encountered many octopuses while diving, and firmly being in the camp that they, like other living creatures, are sentient souls. We cannot know specifically what they are thinking but lets give them credit for having thoughts and capacity for something more than simple reaction to physical stimuli. I was eager to learn more about this. The book gets two stars because I did read it in its entirety - an easy enough read - and enjoyed the occasional information tidbits; furthermore if this treatment of the topic persuades anyone out there to think anew about such creatures, then despite shortcomings, there is some value to it. However, I give it no more than two stars for two reasons:1. This was pretty thin gruel, as others have said, with respect to any new or particularly insightful information about octopus behaviors or relationships or what we might deduce about octopus intellect or emotional life from closely and rigorously observing these things. This more is a story about the author's many visits 'behind the scenes' to a series of captured aquarium octopuses, and about the aquarium staff associated with that activity. The main gist about 'soulfulness' is drawn from how these confined creatures responded to the author, and others, in ways that she interpreted to be friendship. Perhaps so, perhaps not - she offers little to support this beyond the sensation of suckers winding up her arms, and what may have just as likely been the animals' desperate attempts to find relief from such close boring confines.2. That leads to the second reason for only two stars. If as seems the case that the author and aquarium staff care so deeply for these creatures, how can they then reconcile confining - alone - in a small dark boring pickle barrel for months at a time, animals captured in young and mid-life from their wild free oceanic homes. It might just be that these octopuses rise up in their barrel prison and taste those protruding arms with their suckers because there is NOTHING ELSE TO DO other than dying of depression. This confinement seems cruel beyond imagining...indeed one of the captured octopuses does die trying to escape, and others chomp at the restraints in similar attempts. It seems we've come to some consensus that this is not the way to treat primates, why then should it be ok for marine creatures which are being highlighted in this very same book as smart, soulful, and sentient. Does not add up. One can reasonably argue the value, plusses and minuses of zoos and aquarium in general, but capturing and tightly confining smart, free, wild animals for eventual display - and losing some in this process as the price of doing business - does have implications that are an inherent yet all but unacknowledged under-theme of this book. This created a wrinkle that this reader at least just could not overcome. For a more cogent treatment of this topic, I recommend Carl Safina's 'Beyond Words, What Animals Think and Feel' or watch his excellent recent TED talk on the same topic.

Disappointing. I was hoping to learn more about the lives of octopuses, but instead I most of the story was about someone visiting several octopuses in an aquarium. Not a big fan of keeping animals in captivity - the author even describes how some of the animals must have got really bored - but instead of learning many facts about these amazing creatures, we get loads of little side stories about the personal lives of the other people visiting or working at the aquarium.I read this book after "What a Fish Knows" which is a brilliant book, very insightful, and maybe I set the bar too high and was expecting something similar.

The story of Ruth is one of my favorites in the Bible as it tells of love, loyalty and the favor of God resting on one that was not part of his chosen race. As a "gentile" by birth, I love that Ruth shows the grace of God even before Christ died for all, and so it is only fitting that she is one of the few women listed in the genealogy of Jesus. This book is a historical fiction account of the book of Ruth. What can be gleaned from the scriptures has been, and the author has done extensive research and opened up the world of this time in history to her readers. While the Bible telling makes it seem that the day after Ruth starts gleaning in the fields that Naomi encourages her to throw herself at Boaz, I like how the author pulled several months in between, allowing Ruth and Boaz to interact and get to know each other. I love the set-up the author used to bring Ruth into Naomi's life and the reasoning she had for staying loyal to Naomi and the Lord rather than her own people and her gods. While Ms. Afshar takes liberties in adding the fictional details, she is very careful to stay true to scripture and historical accuracy as possible, and her fictional details only added to my love of this familiar story and includes a surprising twist at the end that makes me wonder if that's what REALLY happened. The author's note at the end brought out the fact that the first word in the book was "death" and the last was "Christ", which was intentional as that is how our stories proceed as well. The story stayed true and added such depth to the characters and the backdrop. I loved the foreshadowing to the time of Christ as well. An excellent read if you enjoy Biblical Historical fiction!

Tessa Afshar is one of my favorite authors! I've read Pearl in the Sand, Harvest of Rubies, and Harvest of Gold and absolutely loved them all. Needless to say, I was eagerly awaiting In the Field of Grace, and I was not disappointed!I've read lots of Biblical novels - many of them about women - but I can't remember reading a full-length novel about Ruth. Afshar begins the novel with Ruth living in Moab, meeting her future mother-in-law Naomi, marrying Mahlon, and subsequently becoming a widow. I thought that the story would have started further along but I was pleasantly surprised that the author included this "back story" before Ruth and Naomi travel back to Judah.The author also includes her interpretation of Boaz's back story, which is obviously made up since it's not included in the Bible. But she didn't really diverge / contradict what we know from the Bible so I didn't have a problem with Boaz's story since it is a novel. (I didn't agree with Afshar’s state of the dead sections but those were thankfully limited).I liked how the author dealt with Ruth’s transition to life in Judah; being treated differently because she was a foreigner and a Moabitess to boot; and how the trials she faced polished her character and increased her faith.This book was thoroughly researched historically (i.e. the concept of a goel kinsman redeemer) and includes plenty of romance! It was very well-written, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Biblical novels.

Tessa Afshar has brought to life in vivid color, a story that transcends time and grief. I had often wondered about the complexities of Jewish law, in regards to widows. The story made things more understandable. But more to the point, the very humanness of the players reminds us that in our weaknesses, God is Ever powerful-and can bring miracles out of the dust if our pain, disappointments and grief. We may never understand why our journey is laden with so much pain and sorrow, but what we CAN know is that God will see us through, if we but surrender to Him and let HIM bear our walk on His always ready shoulders...

I am a HUGE fan of Tessa Afshar's - I preordered this book the day I heard about it (many long months ago). And I was not disappointed! The story of Ruth is one I've heard told, and retold, and retold by everyone from pastors to secular authors. And, not surprisingly, this was my very favorite version.The characters were all richly drawn and well-developed, not only the main ones we all know like Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz (although how the author was able to bring so much depth to characters we think we know so well was truly astonishing), but even the secondary characters who helped fill in the story were marvelously done. The author also managed to make a plot that, again, we all think we know so well, new and engaging.Possibly the thing I admire most about Ms. Afshar's writing is her ability to seamlessly weave spiritual truths into her story, and this book is no different. I've read several authors who do indeed put valuable lessons in their books, but none manage to do it so flawlessly and beautifully. I never feel preached at, or like she has to maneuver the dialogue in order to fit some Scripture verse or life-changing moment for the characters, or like it's the same "revelations" I've read in most other Christian fiction. It all flows so well, and often I've found those things she shares utterly "new" (for me at least!), profound, and life-changing. Really. This is one of the only fiction books that I not only thoroughly enjoyed reading but feel like I've truly gained something from. I put it down and wanted to follow Jesus more closely. There was even a moment in the book where I had to stop reading because I just wanted to spend time with the Lord. I don't think that's ever happened to me before! Fiction that is entertaining and encouraging - you cannot ask for a better read than this!
