"The Christmas Story for Children" by Max Lucado, Randy Frazee, and Karen Davis Hill is a nice version of the Christmas story. I like how it starts out telling about the promised Messiah that the Jews were waiting for and how when the time was right, God provided special people to welcome His Son. The subject of the virgin birth is covered in a way that young children will understand ("How can this be, I'm not married yet.") This story covers how an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to tell him that the Holy Spirit caused Mary to be pregnant. There was the usual trip to Bethlehem on a donkey and the inn keepers telling them there is no room in the inn. As is also usual, Mary gave birth the night they arrived in Bethlehem (see my pet peeves about Nativity stories here) I liked the angels that appeared to the shepherds and how their wings were almost invisible (and were clearly male). This book doesn't cover the wise men coming at all. One thing I really liked about "The Christmas Story for Children" was that it covered Jesus' baptism and the beginning of his earthly ministry. The artwork in the book is very colorful and clear. They look like watercolor paintings. ;One picture that I did not like was when Jesus was being baptized, it has him only mostly submerged with John pouring water on His face. There is also a LOT of curlicues. It made the sheep look more like goats with the long curly fur.I received a free paperback copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own..

I love this book. It's starts with a Bible quote and then the quote is rewritten in a way that's so easy to understand as if we are talking directly to God in our own words. There is a sense of peace because the prayers speak what I feel but don't know how to express. I'm happy those that have that gift are willing to share it with those that don't.

Max Lucado's Pocket Prayers is a book which shows the simplicity of prayer. I love that he first gives scripture then a written prayer which teaches that your prayers do not have to be long or wordy. It is a great book to carry with you anytime especially when comfort or direction or source of strength is needed.

I like that each prayer is proceeded by scripture. I'm typically not much for reading prayers, but the prayers in this book prompt me to pray, expanding on the written prayers. This book has been a source of encouragement.

A wonderful way to start the day by reading this series of scriptures and the stories written to accompany each one. A way to start your own daily walk with God through prayer and meditation. These 40 simple steps to getting ready for a relationship with the Lord through prayer is Amazing. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who wants to expedience that beautiful relationship with the Lord.

I take this everywhere I go. It is small and slim and can fit in a back pocket, a purse, a desk drawer, a glove box, and mine has been all of those places and more. When I'm stressed or worried or frustrated or tired or just want to connect with God, I pick one and pray it. These are simple, beautiful, and are exactly what I needed. Mine is already getting pretty dog-eared and no doubt will only become more so! Love this and have purchased for a few other people that I knew would love it also.

And am not sure how to begin because my mind is racing with life issues or feelings of unworthiness, these simple steps bring me to a place where my focus shifts in the right direction and it begins with God You are great ... I need you ... From there it just flows.

I ordered this little book of prayers to accompany Max Lucado's book Before Amen. I struggle with impromptu prayers, so I thought this book might offer some thoughtful prayers for everyday use. It's just excellent! The prayers have been written to follow Lucado's "pocket prayer" plan: easy to say, heartfelt, and customizable. The order arrived in no time at all, and I'm very glad I ordered it with the hardback book.

I started reading my devotional around Easter, and I have not been disappointed after 40 days of devoted study. I like the book so much that I also purchased Grace for the Moment Volume 2. While 99% of my Christian books are on Kindle format, I still enjoy printed books such as this one. I bought the oldest issue not realizing that it was just typed pages and no color picture. My fault I guess since I didn't ask about the edition year. Since I had previous looked at the newer edition in person, it is very confusing to try to refer to it for directions.

I teach beginner quilting classes and I know that if I use one of Eleanor's books, the pattern will be accurate with lots of illustrations to help you through the process. My students need to understand how to work from a pattern so that they will be able to work on their own in the future. The Irish Chain, a traditional pattern, is one of favorites. A "simple 9 patch" is not simple for beginners and this book breaks the project down to simple steps.

Great book for quilting an Irish chain quilt for my Irish husband.

I was disappointed with the purchase.Actually it was a information type pamphlet. It didn't provide me with what I seeking.I made a nine patch quilt and I wanted to quilt it by hand.Thank you

This has quickly become my favorite quilt to make. It's fun and Eleanor's instructions make even the double chain easy to do. I have made several of them for sports enthusiasts using their team's fabric in the middle with accents in the chains. It also works well for baby quilts. The perfect gift!

It's an older version of this printing, thus the black and white photos, but it still follows through with clear and concise instructions. I'd expect no less from Eleanor Burns. She has a way of making difficult looking patterns go smoothly with time saving techniques. I recommend this to those who love to quilt as I do.

One thing about Eleanor...she makes it so easy to make a lovely quilt. Her methods and written instructions are easy enough for a beginner and challenging enough for an expert. I've made so many of her quilts, two actually of the Irish Chain, but have misplaced my book, so need another one to take it's place. Will make yet another triple Irish Chain. Love that pattern.

Frozen Frontier Polar Bound is now one of my most favorite reads. This is a rare book that will not let me put it down after I started! Author Jane is is a natural born writer with an amazing ability to make me feel right there with her. The technical information she was giving about all phases of her adventure was so understandable,her use of English language so creative and observation and attention to detail amazing. Kindle does not have the beautiful photos that print book has so I have both. When I think of her accomplishment as crew and first woman thru last NW Passage that Captain David Scott Cowper has mastered, is astounding. This has to be a Best Seller and I await her next book!

As a solo adventurer with dreams beyond my experience I am a big fan of David and Polar Bound. When I saw Jane's book I grabbed it immediately... expecting a real treat to travel vicariously by David's side. I was not disappointed.Jane is a very talented writer and story teller, putting the reader into the action...whether it be the drudge of climbing into a deep locker or the apprehension of leaping on to an icy dock while holding the lines. Jane also has a great sense of humor.So to David and Jane, thanks for the journey.

Interesting insights into life with an arctic adventurer.

This book is more about a dysfunctional relationship than about arctic travels.

Book was well written but I was disappointed with the contents. I met the couple this year in Petersburg, AK and that prompted me to order book.

Not enough interesting details. Too munh whining about cooking, spilled tea and heavy cushions.

Jane Maufe has written an exceptionally interesting and engaging book on many levels. It not only describes the many facets of seamanship needed on this very arduous journey through the freezing and unpredictable seas of the Northwest Passage, it also chronicles a highly personal look at the stains and triumphs of a new couple making it together with very different skill levels. Jane's partner, David Cowper, is a famous around-the-world voyager, and in a burst of naive enthusiasm, Jane agrees to join him. How bad could it be? And David continually interests her. Her courage, gumption and occasional demands for more equitable treatment, keep this account very lively. As well as insightful comments about their relationship, Jane has an excellent command of the practical and technical aspects required to keep the boat, "Polar Bound," moving through miles of ocean filled with treacherous and unpredictable icebergs, some several stories high. At one point the weather not only ices over their boat, they find themselves in an early winter with the ice closing in. David was lucky to have her on board!

A terrific Filipino food cookbook with many of the recipes that my dad used to fix for the family. He was a chef for Navy Officers, and sometimes treated them with Filipino dishes which they loved. I especially enjoyed the brief history of the Spanish, Mexican, and Philippines influence across those cultures which impacted many of the recipes that we use today. The photos in the book were well done and the recipes easy to follow. So glad that I selected this book of the several available through Amazon. I was not disappointed and have sent a copy to my son to use for preparing these 'new' recipes for his family.

Ever found yourself not cooking Filipino food because you cannot understand the terminology used in other cookbooks, don't know where to find the ingredients or how common cooking techniques are executed (and you don't know who to ask)? As in you have not experienced cooking before. Now that you are an adult, you want something better and wished you had asked your mom or grandma how to do things. Most other cookbooks assume you know a little bit.The author nailed the dillemma guys faced when starting to learn how to cook. He went to the point of identifying where to find these ingredients in the grocery store, illustrating step by step how to do it and laid out more ambitious dishes to pursue when you got the basics. My family and friends were surprised how quickly I began cooking really good Filipino dishes.After owning this book for a couple of months, this got me started and aspiring to do better. This is a well planned, written and illustrated book. HIs writing style injects reason with a little humour and curiosity.Recipes I tried are delicious. Within each recipe, the author also mentions variations and encourages you to experiement. I wish Marvin Gapultos would write other books.Highly recommend!

I frequent the Burnt Lumpia blog for delicious Filipino recipes so when Marvin finally came out with a cookbook, I quickly placed it on pre-order. Great authentic recipes, yet I also like his spin on "new" recipes, e.g. spicy adobo wings. I was pleasantly surprised to find the recipe for cascarone as this is a dessert that my late nanang (grandmother) and tita (auntie) only made. I've made it several times for my kids and I am happy to say that it's 100% exactly the way I remembered as a child. If you are a Filipino-American trying to reconnect with your culinary roots, or a foodie who appreciates all types of foods and wants to experience Filipino cuisine, I highly recommend 2 cookbooks - The Adobo Road Cookbook and Philippine Cookbook (by Reynaldo Alejandro).

This is a wonderful book. The binding, the color intensity of the photos is magnificent. Directions/instructions given are very precise and clear. I can't wait to actually try some of the recipes. It has been so long since I traveled and lived in the Far East and miss the food very much, that I cannot wait to actually try out some of the recipes. And it's a large, heavy book. The pages are quite thick. When I scan through it I think I am holding two pages instead of just the one. Just another wonderful item from your selections. Kudos to the Writer/Chef! Keep up the good work Amazon...

Made the chicken adobo and was really pleased with the recipe. Has been the closest so far to what I ate in Luzon over the years. Not completely the same but very good. A little too much vinegar for me but that isn't necessarily the recipes fault as each of us prefer different flavors in different intensities. Additionally, depending on the region, not all adobo is the same in the different regions of those wonderful islands. I'm looking forward to trying some other recipes as well. So far I'm very pleased. However, I will add that I approach most international recipes with the sense that I'm trying to get close to what I remember the food tasting like. I'll adjust them to fit my tastes while still staying authentic. So far this has been a good book choice.

I am filipino, I love to cook filipino food and I love this book. It's well written and clear. The ingredients are easy to find and helps you create a filipino dish for your non-filipino friends in a way that looks more appetizing (as Rex Navarre says.. "Most filipino food looks delicious in the dark". For those purists out there, it does keep the basic structure of the meals intact. My 75 yr old mother and self-proclaimed filipino food critic loved this book so much I had to buy her a copy!

Nice book, but had way too many fish recipes in it for me. I still gave it 5 stars because it's very nice and besides, fish is a big part of filipino diet. I somehow thought it would have more chicken recipes.

Found this book at my local library and showed it to my Mom who came here from the Philippines in the early 1960's. Most of the recipes are those I grew up eating. My mom never writes down any of her recipes for filipino cooking. I had to learn by watching her cook throwing in a little this and that and mine never tasted quite the same as hers. My mom was surprised how similar these recipes were to her own and this book is my guide to practice with. The pictures are great and I can relate to the author's history! Affordable price--bought three to share with my Americanized cousins who crave simple and authentic Filipino dishes and want to make them.

This book was brought to my attention when my local PBS station was giving it away as a membership gift if you called that night to make a donation. They said it was a great gardening resource for both beginners and expert gardeners. Intrigued, I bought this item with expectations that it would be a nice resource to have in my library. I wasn't disappointed.This book has a lot of info of the common vegetables, fruits, nuts, and herbs grown in the Midwest region. The pictures were nice and the descriptions were made for a beginning gardener. Experienced gardeners may be disappointed with the content, as they would already know the dos and don'ts of edible gardening. If you are looking to plant unusual crops or find lessor known plant descriptions, this is not the book for you. Like I said before, it covers the common items most gardeners want to learn to grow. But I found it a great go to resource to quick look up and verify information just the same.

Not as organized as I'd hoped. I was looking for something a little more consistently laid out. Same sections for each veggie so I could plan accordingly. But some sections would include planting timing and soil temperature and others would skip that and cover only spacing. On the plants where all subjects were covered, it was organized differently. Just hard easily to get all the info about a vegetable or fruit that I needed. Good info, just messy.

Interesting book, but not quite all the information I was looking for.

I got this because I am new to the Midwest and it has definitely been very full of resources and great knowledge for me and about everything around here.

An enjoyable read and full of good information for Missouri and the rest of the Midwest.

The pictures are wonderful and the organization of the book is user-friendly. It would be nice to know if out-of-zone plants such as fig or redwood trees can flourish in a cove or at a riverbank in northeast Kansas.
