As a person who is always looking for ways to make my home more comfortable, I have been so happy with this purchase. This book talks about the non-obvious elements that make one's home a sanctuary and how to achieve a healing home. There are tips and guidelines for exploring our innermost needs and how those can be met by our homes. The book also gives tips on how to remove those "bad vibes" that are left behind by negative people who enter our homes.Overall, it is a sweet and pleasant read with lots of beautiful photographs of what a healing home can look like.

This book was a surprise. It's just amazing how our surroundings effect is, whether we realize it or not! Best to know what is effecting you and how - read it.

This is a great book if you are looking to design your home in a natural way - using color, light, textures, etc. It's organized in a helpful way, and the photos are inspiring. The text and sidebars are well done. So many books these days use light color and hard-to-read fonts. This book is from 1998, but it holds up well, 20 years later.

This is a wonderful book as mentioned in the other reviews. Except, I felt they could have written more in depth rather than touching on the surface in many areas. Also I was hoping they would work more with color therapy and have more photo examples. The cover is misleading in that they never show it again or comment on it, also focusing on warm and bright colors almost exclusively, rather than the cooler tones on the cover.

This book is inspiring. The pictures are beautiful and serve as a motivation to create a haven of healing and peace within the home.Suzi Chiazzari writes in a clear, personal style and lends credibility to how the home can influence our physical, mental and emotional well-being. The suggestions presented are practical and make sense without confusing "new age" rhetoric.Topics presented in THE HEALING HOME include the use of color and texture, aroma, the importance of light, how decor can de-stress one's life, and bringing nature into the home.

For me the book was a great discovery with lots of things I did not know about. It inspired me to paint my bedroom deep-blue and my healing room brick orange, just like in the book. Oh, and the bathroom- you've gotta try make yours like that, with candles! I have also used the book at my speeches, and everyone loved looking through it. I would highly recommend it to people who are new to natural healing like myself. The book also inspired me to buy some stones. I would also love to meet the author one day and I would love to have a Japanese version for my customers. I love my home now- thank you!

Rick uses the American Five Superheterodyne as an example to take you step by step through how the radio works and how to repair and restore it.But, don't be fooled by the title or the fact that this book is on how to restore the American Five Radio it has a wealth of information that applies to restoring all old tube radios.I learned more from this book than anything I have ever come across on radio and it has become my "manual" on restoring old radios.The thing I really like about it is the style that it is written in for the non-electrician that takes you through how the radio actually works.You will really understand after going through it not just how to replace a capacitor but how the radio processes the signals etc...I would recommend you get the book and an old american five radio like the one in the book off eBay or elsewhere and go step by step through the book as you restore it. (that is what I am doing)By the time you are done you will have a great education in radio and radio restoration that will serve you very well in any future projects.I bought this after watching joernone's videos on radio restoration on YouTube. John gives the credit to Rick (Rick is AllAmericanFiveRadio on YouTube)for teaching him how to do radio restoration and now I give John and Rick credit for my learning this great hobby.You can't go wrong with this book.Tom

This book is the first one about tube radios that anyone should read. The Author lays out a circuit diagram and walks you through each section with both the electrical diagram and a drawing of the actual components. He describes the function of each section and explains what happens to the signal in each stage, teaching you HOW the radio functions. This kind of knowledge is then used to show what test voltages should be at each stage and how to diagnose faults. it's plainly explained and clear, being the first time I've ever read a text that instantly made sense to me. The only strange thing is that the Author starts at the speaker and works back to the incoming radio signal. that might make sense to some people but it didn't work for me so I just read the chapters backwards, following the signal as it came into the set and was transformed into audible sound. And a quick check of three dead radios in my garage show they all use nearly this identical circuit, right down to the tube types and locations. This has to be the best book to start with even if you are fixing a transformer radio.

this book is written for the beginner. the author explains step by step what each component is and what it does. and this info can be applied to other radios. if you are a beginner i would recommend this book.

In my opinion, if you are new to radio restoration, this is the kind of radio to start with.This book has a lot of information that will be helpful to you, especially on how to evaluate and test you radio.It is by no means complete but it is brief and helpful.

Great for understanding how a radio functions, with a beginning of good old electricity. Must have to understand how to repair tube radios. Highly recommended.

This is a great little book for the aspiring radio tech. It gets right to the basic facts needed to get started on your first radio repair. The author has many free educational videos on YouTube that are very well done with enhanced schematics and tutorials.

This is a great book to learn how an all American five tube radio works but there is little about how to restore them.The first quarter of the book is basics on what resistors and capacitors are, how they work and basic ohm's law. Almost all the rest of the book is how radio works. Oddly this is done backwards from the speaker making sound to the antenna picking up the electromagnetic waves making it harder to understand.Only the last few pages say anything about how to fix the radios and this information is very very basic and nearly useless. There is nothing about how to fix the cabinets. I did not notice much if anything about equipment such as an isolation transformer needed for safety on these radios, variac, oscilloscope, tube testers, vacuum tube meters, and multimeters.I would give this book two stars but for the fact for someone just starting out this book might be good to learn how radio receivers work as long as you read that part backwards from how it is written.There are far better resources out there to learn how to restore these radios.

Clearly written. Very easy to understand. Good for the beginner or rekindle interest for a prior radio restorer.

I originally intended to bead many of these critters. After spending many hours to complete an "altered version" of the Southern Dogface Caterpillar, it will be my last. I added the floss in the 2nd step as the directions stated, but had to later remove it so the wire would pass through the seed beads. I was so tired of struggling with the wire crimping and breaking that I shortened the length of the caterpillar. I have been beading for fifteen years and this is the most difficult beading project I have ever encountered.

I consider myself an advanced beader, but I haven't done very many wired bead projects. I just made the orange spotted tiger moth, and it is truly beautiful. A little large for a pin (about 2" X 2" X 1 1/2") but nice on a hat or as an ornament. It took about 12 hours to make, and I could probably do it in 10 hours if I did it again. The instructions are very clear, but working the wire through the beads takes some practice, especially when you are attaching wings and legs. I bought magnet wire on ebay and it was very inexpensive. I'm looking forward to adapting these techniques and incorporating them into beadweaving projects. The wire really helps in shaping projects and it is pretty sturdy. Thanks to the authors for the extensive effort that went into this book!

Loved the projects and ideas, was warn before hand, but my butterfly wire broke when I was assembling the wings to the body and it pulled my project completely out of whack, and messed it up. Beautiful projects, just hated that I needed to worry about wire breakage.

An effort but not too difficult. Very pretty things.

We just got back from an 11 day trip to France. Prior to the trip I paid for French lessons on Babbel; that was a mistake. I learned more useful phrases from Rick Steves' book than all of the lessons I took from Babbel. Babbel seemed to focus on verbs and interactive communication but I don't need to know how to say "I am studying to be an architect". Rick Steves' book focuses on travel related expressions, which is what I really needed. The two other couples we were traveling with asked if I studied French in school. I told them no, I studied Spanish, but I bought Rick Steves' book two weeks before we flew to France. Buy this book and you will be able to navigate the French language in France.I also found the phonetic pronunciations in Rick Steves' book to be extremely helpful in trying to understand how to properly pronounce the words.

If you're going to France, this book is very, very helpful. You'll need to know the very basics of French culture too, which is included in this book.For example, when my wife or kids would go to this boulangerie (bakery/pastry shop) and order, they would NOT use French customs, such as greeting everyone formally, "Bonjour, madame". They ended up getting crappy service, and coffee cups that were only half-filled. The French get an undeserved reputation for being rude, but that's only because we are expecting them to be as informal as we are. Not better or worse; just different.When I went to the same boulangerie, I followed the customs and standard phrases from this book, and always received good service. Coffee cups filled too. This book made the difference between a terrible breakfast and a decent one.

Yay!!! A Super tiny book. I've had this book for less than an hour and I can already pronounce the first two or three pages worth of information. Highly recommend a must-have for any France trip!I did have a few years of French and this was a great reminder. But it would also be great for a novice. Rick Steves does it again!

This little book covers everything I could want, including Steves' personable, practical tips for use of the book itself, and of course for the French language. Steves addresses both literal and social points of particular communications. This book provides the words one needs to navigate food (including markets) and dining, travel, medical, shopping, entertainment, sightseeing and much, much more. An excellent application for anyone who is going to spend time in France. Very, useful. A "must-have" was perfectly met for me in that pronunciations are paired with every word or phrase - vital in that the French language is often not phonetic and because with this tool, after a while, one begins to form "patterns" that lead to memorization. Steves always includes some human interest to keep the reader, well, "interested." Steves understands that the most readers are not focused on becoming fluent French linguists, but rather wish to be able to combine enough French language with acceptabe non-verbal cues to be polite, engaged, and comfortable guests in France. In every way a delightful purchase.

This was quite helpful while we were in France for the first time. The book is laid out intelligently by type of interactions so that you can find what you are looking for more easily. Some phrases repeat. There's also an index of words translated in the back for easy use. The locals appreciate it when you make an effort to speak their language and this is a great way to do so.

This book was quite helpful with pronunciation even though there was no CD. I also like the fact that the pages were tough and made for heavy usage and carrying around. The book provides a very deep challenge to anyone who wants to try to dismiss Torah as a man-made mythos.

It is very informative and explains it in detail. Good for the layman. You really need to understand "time dilation" to really understand it ,fully.I enjoyed the .book. Good read.

The author tackles a difficult issue - the synthesis of Big Bag cosmology and Genesis of the Bible. Can he pull it off? Friedmann must have researched to the point of exhaustion (his bibliography shows it) and has come up with quite any accurate timeline that equates two totally opposite perspectives.Skeptics will say that the author simply reverse engineered some mathematics to arrive at his figures. However, it turns out that the code at the basis of this book was conceived of centuries ago - long before the Big Bang timeline even existed. To condemn before investigating is not the modus operandi of an intelligent person.That was the challenge - to read the book with a critical eye to determine whether this was fantasy or a breakthrough.I leave it to readers to make up their own mind, but I can add that Friedmann impressed me, and I'm not easily impressed..Pierre St Clair, author of "Cosmology on Trial" and other books.

This book gives a new perspective on the days of creation; and the author's explanation of the correlation between human time, God's time & creation time is thoughtful and intriguing. As a Christian, I would recommend this book, by a Hebrew scholar, to anyone who finds the seven day creation story a stumbling block to their faith. The reader will discover new ways to explore their own thoughts about the relationship between science and faith.

Daniel Friedmann does an excellent job of both engaging and educating the reader on how the scientific theory of creation is not in conflict with the story of creation found in the Bible. As a person of faith I have often struggled to align my views on creation and this book has given me confidence to believe in the scientific theory however not at the expense of questioning my faith.

This is a must read for every single,solitary Christian Preacher. Freidmann interprets Genesis one in light of three kinds of time described in the Bible; They are God's time, Creation time, and Human time. Then the author - a Jewish scholar - shows mathematically how Genesis one fits perfectly into science and the Biblical description of creation. I'm not saying I believe everything the author writes but it certainly was interesting and only added to what other authors have written; authors like Hugh Ross for example.

Does a wonderful job of using Jewish wisdom literature to explain how God created the world and how the Genesis account can be reconciled to the scientific theory of how the world was formed as well as how old the universe is.

This was a very interesting book, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It was a different take on creation vs. evolution than I had heard before, but it made a lot of sense to me. I love that the author was able to mesh science with what we read in the Bible.

Although the profiles start off with one big wheeled Penny Farthing, this book is very much about the competitive road racer, with one Mountain bike thrown in.The photos are atypical high quality images expected in a coffee table book, as is the size and format.An interesting aspect of these bikes is that each bike profiled was hand-built, and for the most part the bikes are all in original condition with a few that look as if they were frame up restorations. Also, just about every bike profiled is an original machine with an actual competition history. As stated in the closing line of the preface "These are the actual bikes on which great champions and other competitors surged towards the finish line".My son and I read this book the second it came in the mail - we are always impressed by how little the bike frame has changed since its first conception. It is almost impossible to tell the difference in the bikes profiled in this book from 1894 to modern variations. An interesting aspect of the book is the Specifications pages near the end that show each bike frame's angles and variations, as this was about the only way to truly tell that there were differences in the frames.I am always interested in the variations of the technical components and mechanisms found on bicycles and how something often appears years ago and then because it is so ahead of its time fades out of production before reappearing as the new look. There is quite a bit of that to find in these bikes just as there is quite a bit of items that are well put to rest and retirement. It is also interesting to see items that go and come a few times like tapered cotter bolts holding crank arms to BB hangers.If I had to point to the one item in this book that is my favorite bicycle component it would have to be the design and sizes of the front cranks. There are some truly large cranks on some of these bikes, as well as some beautifully designed ones.

This is a picture book history of racing bicycles, starting with high wheel track racers from the late 1800s through to modern hour record track bikes. In between are all sorts of racing bikes, including road, track, tandem, and even a "newspaper courier racing" bike. The authors did their best to find the actual bikes ridden by great cyclists like Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali, Eddy Merckx, Greg Lemond, Sean Kelly, and others. The photographs are beautiful, usually focusing in on innovative or just plain strange takes on derailleurs, brakes, chainrings, cranks, etc.I got this book on a Tuesday, let it sit until the weekend, and then couldn't put it down. Usually, with picture books, I pretty much ignore the text, but I got hooked on the text here, looking for explanations of how this or that worked, why it was designed as it was, and so on. If anything, I'd liked to have seen more of that. The 75 year anniversary Campagnolo picture book did a little better job of that, but of course they had a different job -- celebrating and explaining all the Campagnolo innovations.There are 34 bikes in all. Here are some highlights:- Frank Bartell's Willy Appelhans Six-Day from 1935- Rene Vietto's Barralumin aluminum framed Tour de France bike from 1948- Bruce Waddell's Cinelli Supercorsa from 1965- Merckx's De Rosa (branded Eddy Merckx) from 1974- Francesco Moser's bizarre hour record bike from 1984- Andy Hampsten's Landshark (branded Huffy) from 1988In the back of the book are geometries and dimensions for each of the bikes.There's nothing from Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Miguel Indurain, Graham Obree, or Lance Armstrong. The newest bike in the book is Tony Rominger's 1994 hour record bike, so Armstrong may just be considered too recent.All in all, a beautiful book. If anything, I just wanted it to be bigger and more complete.

I read this book from cover to cover and these bicycle and I think are displayed in museums. The Cinelli Laser is a true classic race bike, only few were made.

My wife gave me this book for Father's Day and it's great. I have a lot of bike picture books and this is a great addition to the collection. It was done in a way I didn't expect and I like it. The price is great, the pictures excellent, detailed pics are well chosen, and there is some good history writing. Gracias, mi amor.

An updated version including the last 10 + years would deserve the 5 stars. Still the book has nice pictures of bikes that made history and mark important moments in the development of the race bike as we know it.

Listened to the audio book and I was laughing hysterically at the beginning . I did get his humor and at least he was entertaining. Some books I've read about the AT are so dry, like "I walked 8.2 miles and stayed in Hilbilly shelter, then I got up and walked 11.1 miles...." He does go off on tangents about alot of things, so what I got from it was it wasn't really that much about the AT. I didn't think he complained alot like some people said. He did describe better than most the parts of the AT that he did see. Also, I believe the fantatical thru-hikers seem to think the AT belongs to them and there is no merit in doing short hikes. I'm glad the book wasn't really about a thru-hike. I liked his descriptions and humor but I could also see where some people who lack a sense of humor wouldn't get him. It's an enjoyable read, but if you are a serious, fantatical hiker, just accept this book for what it is. I give him credit for walking any of the trail and even started to like Katz before it was all said and done. If you are really serious about hiking the trail, I would suggest getting a variety of authors and their perspectives. Normally I don't like authors reading their own books, but in this case if anyone else had read it, I don't think it would have had as much impact.

All of it comes to fruition in this highly amusing and genially forthright travel memoir.You will be surprised to find out that the British think that the cereals are their invention. You will be overawed by the ubiquitous hedgegrows dated back to Anglo-Saxon times embroidering on the British landscape. Bryson will also take us for a ride in a London cab driven by an affably jocular cabbie who has to pass the Knowledge Test to memorize almost everywhere in the City of London. But London is not his demarcation of traveling. Bryson will further come along with you to Bournemouth, Exeter, Liverpool, which is his favorite city, Manchester, and even up north to Scotland all by train or coach, and by walking. With his truculent feistiness, irrepressible inquisitiveness, and scintillating sense of humor fabulously ingrained in his choice of the apropos words and jovial descriptions devoid of malice, Bryson is a cool cicerone, and your excursion will never be a bore.The book seems to be primarily aimed for British readers who might be curious about what a foreigner would think of them and their country as a whole. In that regard, Bryson’s words are predominately British in the sense that the words and expressions he uses in the narrative are familiar to the British. For example, “bank holidays,” “coach,” “lorry,” or “Sainsbury’s” are peculiar to the British ways of life. But this kind of cultural barrier is kindly tackled by Bryson by providing you with glossary of the British terms in the end of the book.I have read other books by Bryson because of the same reason that induced me to select this book: his story-telling like narration is very appealing to me with his proverbial witticism smeared in every word he employs. He may appear a grumpy American man, but he has a heart to feel and see milk of human kindness in every quotidian thing or nondescript person by using the most appropriate words in wonderfully lucid expressions. There is a charm in his writing that will make you an admirer of his writings, and this book is no exception. It is Bryson’s long love letter to the small island he has fallen for head over heels with sincerity and loyalty with kisses and promise to come back to her.

Great book if you love people who love themselves to an extreme. Also a great read if you hate the United States, especially southerners. Perfect for the "open-minded, progressive" types who look down their noses at anyone who doesn't behave and think exactly like themselves. Also, a great gift for anyone who likes books that pretend to be about people doing something, but then are really just about quitting doing that thing before they really get started.Here's a good example of the writing, "See, the Army Corps of Engineers aren't really good at building. One time this thing that they built broke. Moving on...I like Great Britain because there aren't that many Americans there. See, I really hate myself, so I take it out on all other Americans instead if just looking in the mirror and admitting that I am a sad sack."

Right. Well this book completely derailed my reading list for the summer. I was supposed to be catching up on Criminal Justice texts and memorizing terms from Barron's Law Dictionary... Instead, I purchased Notes from a Small Island and things went out of control from there. It is literally the first time in my life that reading a book made me laugh out loud and uncontrollably, to TEARS. This gem was highly recommended by English friends as a must-read before I make the move to the UK for my year of study abroad this fall. I obliged. Not even halfway through the book, I decided to order more of his books right away in order to have them ready when I finished with this one. That is how my Bill Bryson binge began. Currently I am on my third book (by order of what arrives in the mail first) called A Short History of Nearly Everything.Bryson is merciless in his observations of British towns and the British in general, but it's all in the spirit of that endearingly cynical, self-deprecating, quintessential British humour. (see what I did there?!) His way of writing puts you at ease and it's like a cross between travel guide, government & history lesson and stand up comedy, as Bryson loves to go off on barely relevant and hilarious tangents. You never get the sense that he is trying too hard or being pretentious, either. A bonus is the glossary he provides in the back of the book for British words like "dual carriageway" and "naff."The fact that it was recommended to me by English and Welsh friends is testament to the authenticity of Bryson's observations and his comedic genius. Seriously recommend this read if you're an Anglophile or just enjoy a good, fun read.
