Cannonball Adderley covered the gamut in jazz, from saxophonist and bandleader to producer and educator. Diabetes complicated by poor diet and obesity led to his death at the relatively young age of 46. The author covers all aspects of Adderley's life in just 162 pages of text, not including the basic discography and source list. Among areas covered are his and brother Nat's nurturing childhoods, his fortuitous early success in New York, his association with Miles Davis, the various incarnations of his quintet and the ebb and flow of its popularity related to "hit" songs (Dis Here, Work Song, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, etc.), his positive (Riverside) and negative (Mercury and Capitol) experiences with record companies, his devotion to jazz education, and his support of the civil rights movement. Among the many interesting factoids: his mini-stroke in 1958 at age 30, his nervous breakdown some years later, and his firing of Charles Lloyd on-the-spot at the end of a recording session. The most obvious errors detected include calling Yusef Lateef an avant garde musician, and labeling Alvin Batiste and Ernie Watts rock musicians, as well as misspelling pianist and composer Friedrich Gulda's last name "Gulder." Overall, Adderley admirers should find this bio informative and to-the-point about the tragically shortened career of this highly intelligent, enthusiastically outgoing, and very talented jazz master.

I loved this book. I found out some things about Cannonball I didn't know. For instance he was a diabetic, I had heard he was a heroin addict and that was not the case, unfortunately for Cannonball he had a huge appetite and his weight definitely did not help him in the end. He was a very intelligent musician and also was very good at interacting with people. I also liked finding out his wife Olga was the woman who played Bill Cosby's sister-in-law in the early 70's Bill Cosby show. They had a good marriage until he passed. You also will find out his dealings with the record companies and how musicians such as Miles Davis and Quincy Jones were involved in his life as well. Although not a autobiography I still found myself a little moved after reading the book as I feel he passed too soon an 47. I guess that is always how one feels when one of the greats passes away at an early time in one's life . Good job by the author in my opinion.

This is s good beginners guide to the music of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Nothing very new is revealed here but the book is still a valuable source of information on someone who was one of the greatest voices of alto saxophone and arguably one of the best bandleaders ever. Adderley was also an educator and one wishes he had lived much longer as his influence and his personality is much needed in today's Jazz scene.

Have been a Cannonball fan for a very long time. The book is knowledgeable and well done.Hopefully this will foster a more in-depth personal book

It's good to finally have a biography of the great Cannonball Adderley. It's strength is that through the collaboration of Cannonball's wife Olga and former associate David Axelrod there is perspective on the man that is not available elsewhere.What's missing is a musical analysis of what made Cannonball great. It's one thing to survey the man's recorded output and describe the commercial success of each project. It would be quite another to have musicians explain Cannonball's essential position as an instrumental stylist. Cannonball Adderley's hits have long ago come and gone, but his contribution to musical vocabulary will long remain a part of American music.

As always this book is 🔥. Man I need book 3 like NOW. Where to start? Stallion and Stone are a mess but I love there relationship. I really hope she is ok. Stone bout to be in true BEAST mode, especially if they take a lose. I was disappointed in Banks but he redeemed himself but I don't think Bethany is gonna go quietly. I hate that heffa got my name smdh. Kimmie is a work in progress. She is so gullible and her mom ain't s!$t. Racks is just what she needs. Ocean is pathetic I was hoping she would get herself together after book one but no such luck. She is way to grown. I loved lil D, he's a lil sweetie. Seaqual is sweet too and he loves his big sis. I smiled when he called himself checking Banks. The whole dang scene at the cookout had me dying laughing. I'm wondering if the guy who Ocean is with had something to do with what happened at the end? I don't think Turtle got it in him to do it but I could be wrong. I need book 3 to find out though. I think that Stone Cofa and Hood were brothers in another life.

The way Stone and Stallion are with each other is beautiful in a crazy violent kind of way LOL. Neesha and Banks are finally getting it together after Banks pulled a lil boy move...once Banks was made to see what he was doing, he quickly corrected his errors. Racks is bae all day but I'm not feeling Kimmy for him...she just seems too sneaky and selfish...I'm waiting to see if she can turn her ways around and grow up. That Ocean, sad to say I wasn't mad when Turtle was beating that a**, she was getting only a taste of what she deserves....wonder who the man was she got in the car with. That ending had me screaming NOOOOOO, I need part 3 ASAP!!!!!

You did your thang Kendra with this part 2. Stone and Preshus are made for each other because both are bosses. Banks and Neesha are perfect for each other. Seaquel and Lil D are so cute and funny because they kept me laughing. Racks is sexy for a white guy and now Kimmy is really seeing him for the perfect guy for her. Her mom and Jamison are gonna get it for trying to her . please let Preshus aka Stallion and the baby be okay. Can't wait for part 3!!

Dang this was the ish! Stone, Banks, and Racks are crazy as hell! Stone and Banks met the match with Preshus and Neesha! I love how the author didn't make them out to be weak women. Kimmy's need some help with the way here mental is set about men and money. She better get her dumb self together before she loses Ranks to someone else! Please let Preshus and the baby be ok.

My son found this book in the library and it was his favorite book. I was unable to find it elsewhere and have had this on my shopping list for over a year before it became available to purchase. For the price of the book, I expected it to be in good shape. However, when I opened it up, the front and back covers were smuggled all over with dark stuff. The book itself did not look like the spine was bent, so I am not sure if this was just due to the way the shipped it (in a cardboard box) or handling when shipping it. I've never had this issue with any books before. Other than that, the book is what I expected - lots of great pictures and a good book for any toddler interested in dump trucks!

It's like this book was written for me. Fun, simple, incredible experiments and ideas for playing around with home-made electronic sounds. I'd spent a year playing with 555-style oscillators from the Forest Mims playbook to make synthesizers; but Forrest has musical circuits as an afterthought for his more practical electronic projects. I was at a complete standstill, full of ideas, but doing them incorrectly and getting nowhere.This book has exactly what I need to go up a few levels. And while it's at it, tons of really fun ideas for the sound devices themselves. Put loose change in a speaker cone, hook it up to a nine volt battery, dangle some leads and see what you get! Who knew? And Nicolas writes pretty funny as well; I'd never seen a resistor/capacitor setup compared to a Monty Python sketch before.I have one complaint about the book. There's too much cool stuff. I finish a chapter, ready to try everything, and then the next chapter has even better ideas. And then I look at all the chapters remaining and wonder where I'll find the time to do it all. I've got an online order for Jameco for which I'm afraid to hit "send" until I re-read it all again. Meanwhile, I've had a blast doing the projects from the first few chapters.

The included CD is great fun, but best saved for later listening, since it contains "spoilers" of what some of the projects might sound like.Because of the book's origination in a class situation, the explanations and pictures are not always ideally clear. There are a lot of typos. However, the writing is so engaging and the book is so much fun that it still deserves 5 stars. Where the book is incomplete ("how to I de-solder something?"), the Web is there.The book is clearly aimed at musicians without any electronics experience. Nonmusicians might still enjoy it, but a joy in playing with sound is absolutely required. I suspect the book would be way too basic for people with any significant experience in electronics.As sidebars, the book includes a considerable amount of history of electronic music -- who's who and what they've been up to.

This is a really fun book, with lots of projects for budding electronic musicians. But it goes beyond that: It's a solid intro to electronics and CMOS components. I went into this book thinking it might be too basic, yet I walked away with a lot of ideas, and some interesting new techniquess.I wish that more electronics writers would cover the material with this author's style and accuracy. Also, kudos for providing parts sources and for using easy to find and inexpensive components. (I've seen many people, myself included, become frustrated by hard-to-find parts lists or the use of discontinued items. These projects suffer from neither of those problems.)In the end, you'll be left wanting to know more about the components and techniques you've picked up. (You'll probably want to add Don Lancaster's classic CMOS Cookbook to your shopping cart. It will give you the details about many of these components.) Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to other books by this author.

I was hoping for a bit more in-depth information on electronics than this book gave. It's a nice "get your feet wet" kind of book, but left me with lots of questions that I think could have been included in the book. The first half of the book wasn't very interesting to me as it talked mostly about circuit bending and hacking already made electronic noise makers.

Seriously, if you are interested in making some extraterrestrial sounds/gadgetsget this book!!! I recommend reading it with Mort Garson playing in the background for ultimate knowledge absorption.

This book is absolutely incredible! So simply articulate to such technical things, and such interesting projects! This is just an all around well written project book. It has updated citations to things like what website to get bulk/cheap parts from and examples (on DVD, as well as other references) from many sonic artists who have tampered in related mad sciences. The different projects are diverse and well prepared.. It's just the greatest thing for a beginning sonic/electronics nerd! Can't say enough about how much I've gotten out of this book.

Unfortunately it has been several months since reading this, but my general impression was that it was informative. Its strength is the explanation of how psychological motive underlies, and differentiates, types of violent crimes. As any fan of Mr. Douglas expects, numerous fascinating case examples culled from his career solving violent crime illustrate the narrative. Recommended for students of human nature, psychology students or dilettantes, or any reader whose life philosophy is forewarned is forearmed.

Could be used as a textbook. The book is a fascinating read. I chose the book to enhance a book I am writing. However, I would have read this book anyway. It is good.

The book gets a bit formulaic. Give the details of the crime, give the profile they came up with, then tell about the person arrested, stressing similarities to the profile. Nonetheless, it is very interesting and a fast read.

"The Anatomy of Motive..." by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, ISBN 0-671-02393-4 (PB), Pocket Books 1999 - is a 393 page exposition by a seasoned writer (11 publications) and FBI's legendary profiler. It is a well-written and indexed (19 pp) mind-probing study of violent evildoers which seeks to observe why misdeeds are committed in especial ways and how that may indicate who (UNSUB) did the particular crime. Douglas had two decades with the FBI (with teaching and investigative assignments) Behavorial Science Unit (BSU) at Quantico and he discloses the field practice of applied criminal psychology to the crime scenes, forensic evidences and interrogation techniques. An extensive listing and/or recital of many high profile cases is looked to - including Manson, Berkowitz, Speck, Gacy, Zamora, Pierre & Andrew, Ross, Nickell, List, Coleman & Brown, Cunanan, and Kaczynski is but to highlight a few. I found his judgmental commentaries on these killer criminals were useful, and based on his personal thorough experiences. The final chapter includes 4 brief case studies where the reader is to provide the 'who' (suspect) utilizing the basics of 'why' and 'what' had occurred. This book is entracing and based entirely on true facts, raising the question of why one would want to read crime fiction in place of real people in real places.

I took a course in college called British Mystery Novels and I wish our professor had us read this book before we read the novels.However, the information helps me understand some of the people that I have had to deal with over the last fifteen years. In fact, Douglas opened my eyes to the reason why my father beat me; he was a sadist. He actually enjoyed torturing me. There was no other reason he beat me with a bat at age sixteen; I was only twenty-minutes late. He was one sick hombre.

I've read many of John Douglas' books, many that I've liked. "Mind Hunter" and "Inside the Mind of BTK" -- both really strong efforts -- "Law and Disorder" and "The Cases that Haunt Us" -- not bad but not great. And while I am surely a fan of his work, there's always been something about his books that I didn't like, and I just couldn't quite put my finger on it. Until reading "The Anatomy of Motive," that is:Pointless ad hominems. (Are there any other kind?)An "ad hominem" is basically "name calling," if you haven't heard the Latin phrase before. It is a form of a red herring, I believe, because it tries to take the focus of attention away from the original argument. As examples, say in a presidential election, one candidate accuses the other of "not being qualified for the job." This would not be necessarily an ad hominem, but rather could be opinion -- and correct -- since it is not a personal shot on the opponent but rather a potential valid criticism. But let's say that another candidate calls the other "stupid, because he's just a tax-and-spend Liberal." Well, while I might somewhat agree in principal, this would be an ad hominem. The word "stupid" should be the clue. And "Liberal" might be an ad hominem in this context as well.And here, Mr. Douglas calls many of the criminals that he's dealt with as "stupid," "losers," etc. Sure, you can easily argue that all of these names are true, but that's not the point. The point is, it is already implied that these guys are all of these things and even more, without having to sling mud. And when you use an ad hominem, it unfortunately only weakens your argument. Hey, for you naysayers, I don't make the rules, I only try to follow them.Another issue that I had with this book: Mr. Douglas's position on gun ownership. A few years ago, I moved into one of the worst cities in all of California for violence -- believe me, that's saying something -- and for the first time ever, I purchased a hand gun. I had no choice. I had to call 911 many times, as there was constant gunfire outside of my house, let alone break-ins. I always worried about taking a stray bullet, or more importantly, a home invasion. I will tell you this: if you have a home invasion, you may not have time to even grab your weapon. But I surely would rather have a gun than not in that scenario. Why? At least I'd have a chance.And in this book, Mr. Douglas writes that he believes that, before someone purchases a gun, the police should talk to his NEIGHBORS to see if he's fit to own a gun! Are you kidding? In that old neighborhood, I lived next to two school teachers and a gal that worked at a hospital, all Democrats. How do I know? They told me as much. They were all anti-gun, so there's no way they would have said that I should have been able to buy a gun. Why? Because they would have said "NO ONE is fit to buy a gun." How do I know? They actually told me so. It is surprising to me that, since Mr. Douglas was in law enforcement for so long, that he wouldn't understand this obvious unintended consequence of his stance.This all being said, I still really liked his book, as usual. I usually "enjoy" reading about serial killers -- if "enjoy" is the correct word -- but here, he mostly discusses bombers (which can be serial killers), spree killers, and mass murderers, which was a nice change of pace, at least for me. If you accept my minor recommendation to buy this book, you will get to read about many of these types that have committed various atrocities over the past 30 or 40 years, and why they started killing. It is very interesting.Well, I could call Mr. Douglas "stupid" because of his position on gun ownership in America. But that would be an ad hominem, and that would only weaken my review. Instead, I'll simply say that he hasn't correctly thought through the unintended consequences of his theory.

this is one of the most fascinating books that will be for generations. if you're interested in criminal psychology and true crime, this book is very worth your time!

Sorrow in the lives of Christians is to be used by God for His glory. But in order for that to happen, the Christian in trials needs strength and faith to cope. This book is a tonic, as it outlines the faith and courage of three Christians who struggled greatly. More important, Piper gives context and meaning to their suffering as he tells their stories. I found great comfort in this book many years ago. As a pastor, I recently bought several more copies of this to give away to people going through trials. Just two days a go, one of those people thanked me on the phone. He is going through a difficult divorce and trying to figure out why life hurts so much. He was grateful for the encouragement he received from this book.

The second of Piper's The Swans are Not Silent series, this book was the most difficult to read because of the subject it dealt with - suffering. Piper selected three great men of the faith, known for their devotion to the Lord and their godly walk and let the reader peak behind the curtains of their lives - and the suffering, depression, attempted suicide and struggles of these three men was very distressing. Yet, even as Bunyan face his twelve years in prison for preaching the gospel, he saw his struggles actually ordained and orchestrated by God for His own glory; a view that both Cowper and Brainerd shared regarding their own hardships and turmoil.In a country where suffering is avoided at all costs and seen by many as spiritual weakness, the lives of Bunyan, Cowper and Brainerd shout a different story about the sovereign hand of God in the lives of His children. 1 Peter chapter 4 tells us that we should not consider suffering strange, but rather as a sign that the Lord truly is in control and that He is working out our salvation for His own glory through our hardships. Looking back at the lives of these three saints, it is easy to see how God has been glorified in their struggles - from the writings of Bunyan to the poems and hymns of Cowper to the effectual call to ministry that the life of Brainerd has had on hundreds if not thousands who followed him. While these three struggled greatly, many have tasted the fruit of eternal peace from their hardships.All four books of this series are outstanding - highly recommended for all Christians to read. Piper introduces us to some great men of the faith and challenges us with their lives to walk in a manner worthy of our calling as those who went before us have done.

If you have not noticed God Smiling, this is the book.I survived his laughter all thru my police career with NOPD.We read their stories and wonder how they endured. How does one survive twelve years in a dank prison cell? How does one survive month after month of a depression so debilitating that death seems the only hope? How does one endure tuberculosis? Or cancer, or emptiness, or death, or loneliness, or divorce? Whatever the trial may be, how does one endure without the soul shriveling up and blowing away with the breeze?

Piper crafts a timely understanding of three Saints who knew extreme suffering. Yet, he does not simply record their dark days but captures Godly wisdom and consolation from their writings and journals. Bunyan, Cowper, and Edwards speak to us in the 21st century if we would simply listen. We do not desire affliction and suffering and somehow wrongly expect it to be removed through our education and technology. Piper reveals to us that the result of comfort and health may be we miss the hidden smile of God.

Phenomenal. Found this book amidst a confusing trial. My faith was built up, and I was reminded how I should live. Read it.

As a person who is always looking for ways to make my home more comfortable, I have been so happy with this purchase. This book talks about the non-obvious elements that make one's home a sanctuary and how to achieve a healing home. There are tips and guidelines for exploring our innermost needs and how those can be met by our homes. The book also gives tips on how to remove those "bad vibes" that are left behind by negative people who enter our homes.Overall, it is a sweet and pleasant read with lots of beautiful photographs of what a healing home can look like.

This book was a surprise. It's just amazing how our surroundings effect is, whether we realize it or not! Best to know what is effecting you and how - read it.

This is a great book if you are looking to design your home in a natural way - using color, light, textures, etc. It's organized in a helpful way, and the photos are inspiring. The text and sidebars are well done. So many books these days use light color and hard-to-read fonts. This book is from 1998, but it holds up well, 20 years later.

This is a wonderful book as mentioned in the other reviews. Except, I felt they could have written more in depth rather than touching on the surface in many areas. Also I was hoping they would work more with color therapy and have more photo examples. The cover is misleading in that they never show it again or comment on it, also focusing on warm and bright colors almost exclusively, rather than the cooler tones on the cover.

This book is inspiring. The pictures are beautiful and serve as a motivation to create a haven of healing and peace within the home.Suzi Chiazzari writes in a clear, personal style and lends credibility to how the home can influence our physical, mental and emotional well-being. The suggestions presented are practical and make sense without confusing "new age" rhetoric.Topics presented in THE HEALING HOME include the use of color and texture, aroma, the importance of light, how decor can de-stress one's life, and bringing nature into the home.

For me the book was a great discovery with lots of things I did not know about. It inspired me to paint my bedroom deep-blue and my healing room brick orange, just like in the book. Oh, and the bathroom- you've gotta try make yours like that, with candles! I have also used the book at my speeches, and everyone loved looking through it. I would highly recommend it to people who are new to natural healing like myself. The book also inspired me to buy some stones. I would also love to meet the author one day and I would love to have a Japanese version for my customers. I love my home now- thank you!
