A reading of the book's introduction would give sufficient tattle, a few pages would entice:-Sixty plates: 2-9 designs per plate, more than 250 designs.-Motifs: plant, animal, Christmas, holiday, geometric. religious figures, abstracts...-Range: whimsical to stylized.-Applications: needlework, textile design, leather work, pottery, wood burning, carving, drawing, Wycinanki...Art from 24 countries alphabetically arranged: including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Yugoslavia. One to five pages for each country. Ex: Albania shows 3 designs on 1 page. Czechoslovakia boasts 20 designs 5 pages.A key on each page explains the media source, most with time periods.Ex: Sampler embroidery, west Hungary, Slovak influence (early 19th century).This allows the curious to gleefully chase more information elsewhere.Most art from 17th - 19th centuries.On the 10 vertically-laid pages, text on the left page is along the spine, text on the right page along the edge. The title and the subject have such great promise and this book does an OK job covering the man who more than any other defined NY baseball in the late 60s and early 70s. Maybe it's unfair, but I expected better; something more akin to a Kahn's Boys of Summer or Charles Einstein's Willie's Time. Travers is maybe a little too excited or swept up in his iconography of Seaver and got lost in his own fascination of the man. On the one hand there are great details about the highlights of Seaver's career - coming to the Mets, the almost no-hitter against the Cubs, and of course the 69 and 73 pennant races and World Series games. The book also does a good job describing, from the pitcher's perspective, the events leading up to the Cincinnati trade. In between though are somewhat incomplete observations about who he did and didn't get along with, Seaver's ease in crossing racial lines, and his commitment to his family and maintaining his own set of values. None of this is bad or inaccurate (as far as I might know) but much of it is oddly placed, not always in context or rehashed in other chapters.What I truly enjoyed about this work was the devotion to detail of the 69 and 73 seasons, as well as other highlight periods in Seaver's career. Travers is good about taking you back to games that I distinctly remember watching on WOR, listening to on the radio or actually seeing at Shea. Those memories alone make the book worthwhile.

Overall a decent book. Would rate it a 2 for those who saw Seaver's career unfold and a 4 for those who never had the opportunity to see him pitch.Unfortunately, the author is an over the top Seaver fan and seems to think it necessary to emphasize that Seaver's record would have been better had he had more run support.When he won 20 the author says he should have won 30! When he won 15, the author says he should have won 20!! he won 3 Cy Youngs-the author argues he should have had twice as many!!!Long story short(and i am a Yankee fan and not a great fan of Seaver) Tom Seaver is a 300 game winner,3 time Cy Young award winner, a near unanimous first ballot Hall of Famer and in the discussion to be one of the greatest pitchers of all time. It is unnecessary to cheapen his legacy by making silly excuses for why he should have been even more successful than he was.

I've loved the Mets since 1977 and this is one of the worst Mets or sports books I've read due to the author's slavish devotion to Tom Terrific. i did not feel I got a balanced story from the author who was clearly a Seaver fan. Only the positive attributes of the subject were stressed and you are force fed that Seaver could do no wrong (almost) and he was always three steps above everyone else.If you are a Mets fan you will not learn one new fact or insight about Tom Seaver. Avoid this book.

This is a poorly written, poorly researched, bit of fluff.If you want to learn more about Tom Seaver, professionally and/or personally, don't expect to learn it here. Not sure how or why this was even published.

Without this masterpiece of baseball writing, I wouldn't have known Shea Stadium was in Manhattan and Joe DiMaggio was amoral. And this is within the first 60 pages, with more nonsense to come. This book is worthless crap, stay away.

I've long admired pitching star Tom Seaver, both for his ability to play baseball and for his intelligence. Thus, I was eager to read this biography of Seaver. To say I was tremendously disappointed would be an understatement.This was probably the worst book I've read this year. If you like your biographies to be objective and/or balanced, this is not the book for you. However, if you like fawning, gushing hero worship, essentially a hagiography, you might enjoy this one.The writing was so flowery and, at times over the top, that it was tough to read this book, except with a horrified fascination.Also, the author was just plain mean, in a weird, almost childish, way, towards many of Seaver's competitors and/or opponents. For example, of San Diego Padre pitcher Randy Jones, the author calls him a "figure barely recalled by history who also could not carry Seaver's dirty jockstrap." Others were said to not hold a candle to the great Seaver. You get the idea. Lots of opinions without facts to back them up.When Seaver's record was substandard or he did not win an award that the author believes Seaver should've won, the author piles on excuses. Seaver's team never scored any runs for him, unlike pitchers on other teams, apparently. Others were just jealous of him and his greatness, or so it was claimed, again and again and again.The personal information provided about Seaver was interesting, at times, but the author included far too many generalizations. How can we really know that he was the last of the nonadulterous baseball player in the majors? How can we know that some of his teammates followed his lead in this regard? Was there a survey taken?The author adds: "Curiously, the 'quintessential Seaver book' was never written ... until, finally, this one!" Somehow, I don't think so.Maybe someday, the quintessential Seaver bio will be written. I look forward to reading that book. Unfortunately, this is not the quintessential Seaver bio.

Are you tired of searching for topographical lake maps on the internet and printing them out one at a time? Then this book is for you! This book provides not only topographical maps of the lake bottoms, shape, some bottom structure, general water condition/color but also provides local comments on the condition of the fishing and what to expect from species present, to best areas to fish for them. It also indicates lake access and launches. I will not hesitate to purchase the other volumes that cover the other parts of Wisconsin lakes. A very good and reliable resource if you do not know these lakes. The book is made of pretty good quality paper. Its covers are glossy hard stock paper and can withstand a bit of water splashing on them. After all, you would have this book in your boat! I would recommend carrying it in a plastic bag however to keep water and rain from damaging it.

For the grand kids... They loved it.

This book is from 2002. It's NOT "newly updated" as described. The new version is 2016.

Does show alot of detail for big lakes but I was very disappointed how little to no detail is shown for many smaller lakes. Also no waterproof pages, not something to take on the boat which is where you want to use it

I am an American living in S. Korea for two years now and have read a few different books about N. Korean defectors, probably a dozen individual stories in total. Sungju Lee's story is a must. It parallels the other accounts I have read, and yet is told in a 'delicate' manner (or as delicate as possible when describing hardships and tragedies). It is written for young adults to understand and also for more mature readers to appreciate. I am a mother of two boys and was left heartbroken for the loss of Sungju's childhood and for the loss of parental joy his parents had to endure. N. Korea is completely closed off from the rest of the world. Information is controlled, children are brainwashed from a young age and even the 'elite' families living in Pyongyang are not safe. It is truly a horrifying place to be born. Escaping from N. Korea is not only dangerous but costly. N. Koreans crossing over into China are considered illegal visitors and subject to being sent back to N. Korea. The most astounding, to me, is that this is not history, but current events. As I sit here typing this review, people in N. Korea are enduring unbearable pain and hardship. For the fortunate ones able to find safety and refugee in S. Korea, it is another long road. They must unlearn all they were taught and relearn a new way of thinking and integrate into an entirely new culture. There is gain but there is tragic loss as well. Their identity is stripped and fear is a constant undercurrent. I urge you to buy this book, gain information about N. Korea. Perhaps after reading this book you will be motivated to learn more and also contribute to the bringing N. Korean refugees to safety. I know I am!

I have read many books by North Korean escapees. Each one is fascinating and I have enormous sympathy and respect for the problems these people endure. This book adds the interesting perspective of a boy whose parents fell from official grace, causing them to leave Pyongyang and suffer socially. However, the dialogue and events in this book at times feel like they were contrived as afterthoughts, making it feel artificial, and more like a book written by an English speaking co-author who added drama and philosophy, rather than the actual, contemporary experience of a young teen trying to survive during a famine.

When Sungju Lee was eleven, his family fell from grace in the North Korean capital of Pyongang. Soon he learned that nearly everything he had been taught, including the infallibility of the regime, had been a lie. His parents were forced to abandon him and he became "ketjabi," an orphaned street boy, or circumstance. This book follows his story as he creates a street gang whose only mission is to survive. This autobiographical story is one of trials, tribulations, and heartbreak; but it's also one of hope and overcoming all odds in the worst possible conditions. While Lee was lucky enough to escape North Korea, this shows what life is REALLY like for the millions of innocent people unlucky enough to be born under North Korean rule.

I've read several books on North Korea and those who have escaped. Sungju Lee deserves every bit of respect and admiration for what he went through to simply survive. This happened in OUR day in OUR time... less than 20 years ago, people were starving to death in North Korea. This book is excellent and shows you how hard the people of North Korea have it and how we as the rest of the free world need to help and pray for their freedom. This book is a MUST read. Thank you Susan McClelland for your assistance in helping Sungju Lee. My hear hurts for the North Korean people. This book has pushed me to do more, research more, and pray harder for them.

I really liked this book, though disturbing and sad. It gave you a glimpse into the hardship and suffering of the North Korean people and sadly most of them do not even know it is happening as they blindly follow their own regime. However, to me, the biggest surprise in the book was that the story starts in 1999 - you would think I took place in another time. It is unbelievable that this is taking place right now in North Korea - in this day and age no one should have to live in such horrid conditions and suffering.

For any reader, I think this is a slow starter and very trying. It is obvious to an older reader that it was lived and written in another language. I think it will speak to anyone who has pondered "what would I do if my world disappeared?" Two-thirds of the way through, it becomes complex enough to hold your interest; this is a terrifying story about the ruin of people when dogma and propaganda take precedence over human lives. (Keep in mind that Kim Il Sung, his son, and grandson Kim Jung In, are often referred to as Fat 1, Fat 2, and Fat 3)

This book left me wanting more! Sungju Lee provides an insider's perspective of Pyongyang and, more hauntingly, the challenges of a young boy's existence in non-Pyongyang North Korea. Lee takes his readers along as he develops his capacity to forage for scraps of existence and create his own community in a bleak landscape. The reader is informed that Lee successfully reunited with some family. However, details about the escape were intentionally omitted or obscured to protect family and friends who remain north of the 38th parallel. Lee's story is powerful. His omissions provide the hint of another story that is behind the one in his book.

I liked a lot of things about the book. One thing is how the author made me enjoy this book, because I read involuntary for school, but it kept me on my toes at points, and I had emotions for when things happened in the book. For once I was able to really understand and follow what it was saying and it created the effect that made me want to continue reading, even if I didn't want or have to, it made me really satisfied and I am very happy that you have done things like help North Koreans in china to places safer, that they can live without worry. I hope you will eventually find your mom and continue to impact the community and other people, and even encourage others to do the same. Thank you for sharing this experience.

This book is a huge disappointment. I thought it would be an exciting, edge-of-your-seat book exploring the transition from Pope Benedict XVI to Pope Francis. Sadly, I've found this book to be little more than an author allowing his bias to destroy a worthy project and attempt to capture this important moment in the history of the Catholic Church. I hope that the Netflix movie that's being prepared is better than this awful book.

This is an odd book. It brings together the graphic novel and North Korean austerity. Canadian animator Guy Delisle spent time in North Korea, which has apparently become the new favored source for cheap animation labor. In this book Delisle captures the absurdities of life in Pyongyang, more through pictures than through words. Only one floor of Delisle's massive hotel has electricity, there's bizarre and uninspired food, and minimal recreation activities. Delisle brings a copy of 1984 with him, and North Korea is certainly an Orwellian society.I think I would have found this book more effective if I didn't really know anything about North Korea. There's nothing really surprising here. I enjoyed Delisle's drawings, but I felt like there was too much drawing and not enough narrative. I think I'd have preferred an art exhibit to a book. Ultimately the book lacks depth, and the illustrations don't make up for what the writing lacks.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it gave a good view of what it is like to live in a totalitarian society and how the people act just to keep out of the way of the authorities. It also showed that although North Korea wants to show that it is a state which can manage without input from western countries it actually cannot. I liked the drawing style and the humorous way the author conveyed the information. I would recommend this book and will make every effort to find other books by this author to read

For the past two nights I have had dreams about North Korea. I don't recall ever having had a recurring dream. I never dreamt about the North during the early part of this year when I read one book after another about the DPRK. I wonder what tonight's dream will be about, considering I have just finished Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, a graphic novel by Guy Delisle (translated by Helge Dascher). Pyongyang is the first work of graphic fiction I have read. It is classed as a novel but it reflects Delisle's own two-month stay in the North Korean capital where he worked for a French animation company.Delisle's observations and frustrations in having to deal with North Korean bureaucracy made for a hilarious read. Although Delisle is in the country on a two-month work contract, he is still led by guides everywhere. Guest workers, like tourists, must pay their reverential respect at all North Korean monuments and propaganda museums in addition to working at their job six days a week. Delisle is given the propaganda tour and he depicts himself in some drawings as barely able to contain his laughter. He expresses his frustration at not being able to find a decent cup of coffee in the whole country. I know what I have in store yet I will be prepared in that at least I have the foreknowledge to bring my own, albeit inferior, instant coffee when compared to brewed, from home when I travel there.The drawings were made with a variety of perspectives which I admired and enjoyed. In the midst of his adventures working with westerners and North Koreans at the animation studio, Delisle inserts a running joke in the form of a police line-up in which he asks the reader "Can You Spot the Traitors?". One must look at all the people and decide from almost an identical set of characteristics who is a traitor to the fatherland. A typical answer would be Figure #1 because "he let the portrait of Our Dear Leader gather dust". I do not believe that a graphic novel about North Korea would have had the same humorous touch if it had been written and drawn by someone who hadn't been there. A book like this would be a welcome addition to my collection on account of its artwork alone, and although I have already read it I would consider buying a copy.I read the hardcover edition, which was 176 pages printed on a very thick paper. I always had to ensure I wasn't turning two pages at once since it often felt as though I had multiple pages between my fingers.

Since the end of the Korean War, North Korea has become the most isolated, mysterious and fortified country on Earth. Unlike many other remote locations around the world North Korea is not a place many people would want to spend any time. However, thanks to globalization, North Korea's vast supply of super cheap labor and a real need for foreign investment the country has opened its doors just a crack and in peeked cartoonist Guy Delisle for a view at probably the most tightly regulated society on the planet. Mr. Delisle documents his experience in North Korea accompanied by his ever present "guide" and his translator. Pyongyang isn't really a story per se as much as a slice of life glimpse at the daily goings on in North Korea or at least as much of a glimpse as foreigners are allowed to see.The drawing style in Pyongyang is a minimalist black and white that captures nicely the mirthless life in North Korea. You get a sense that the leadership is desperately trying to maintain a good face for the rest of the world but like the bridge in the book that only gets half painted the rust is bleeding through and the cracks are growing. There could hardly be a better advertisement for Capitalism and Democracy than the sterile, dystopia that is North Korea where airports and restaurants operate without lights and massive construction projects sit unfinished and crumbling. Freeways are built without exits and all the people listen to the same state run radio broadcast featuring music that sounds like "a cross between a national anthem and the theme song of a children's show".North Korea has the same kind of creepiness as a cult except on a massive scale where Kim Jung Il acts as patron deity and his smiling visage is ever present in society. Each room has his portrait and his face appears on a pin that all Korean's are required to wear. This is a land where worker can advance by ratting on their fellow citizens and slight infractions can cause people to suddenly vanish.Guy Delisle does a superb job of capturing the bleakness and bizarreness of North Korea contrasting it with his own light hearted rebellious attitude. In the end he tries to retain a shred of normalcy throwing paper airplanes from his apartment window while the people below try and hold it together in a society permeated by fear and mistrust. One of the items that the author brings with him is a copy of George Orwell's `1984' but what he found was the physical manifestations of Orwell's deepest fears brought to life.
