Sanyajit Das is a financial analyst who had written many books on derivatives and related topics, such as Extreme Money: Masters of the Universe and the Cult of Risk,Risk Management and Financial Derivatives,Credit Derivatives,Swap and Derivative Financing, etc. He has also revised this 2006 book [see: Revised edition.He wrote in the Preface, "[This book] is the record of my time in the derivatives industry. It is a collection of tales about the products, the people and the strange goings-on in the business... There is almost no literature that explains the industry in an accessible way. There is also little that sets out the practices, some of which are insane, of this mysterious area of finance. [The book] explains the industry, how it operates and what it does. The book does not attempt to make a case for and against derivatives, it just shows what REALLY goes on every day in the dealing rooms in major financial centers, the real life dramas and rational madness that shape modern markets. [The book] is intended for two audiences. People in banking and finance ... will find it a wry and entertaining read... This book is also for those who want an accessible introduction to this weird and wonderful world. It will perhaps confirm their worst fears and prejudices about these strange instruments, what they are used for and the people who trade them." (Pg. xiii)He recalls, "Many of today's traders hadn't been born when I stumbled accidently into derivatives trading. I had spent over 25 years in this world of traders, guns and money. The traders and money were clear enough. And you couldn't have financial weapons more powerful than derivatives---they were the big guns of the trade... How did I get there? I had followed the money... I had not known very much about derivatives when I started. How did I get here? ... This is that story. It is also coincidentally the story of the rise and rules of derivative trading---its 'knowns' and its 'unknowns.'" (Pg. 18)He points out, "The major defender of derivatives was Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York... The head of the central bank's role as cheerleader for the derivatives lobby was curious." (Pg. 20) He recalls, "We needed 'innovation,' we were told. We created increasingly odd products. These obscure structures allowed us to earn higher margins than the cutthroat vanilla business... New structures that clients actually wanted were not that easy to create... The truth was that we weren't very creative but by golly, we were good at plagiarism. We chased our tails some more." (Pg. 41) Later, he adds, "Survival requires keeping your head down. There was no point in resisting the latest fad. I just nodded and kept doing what I always did---trying to make money. No management fad lasted long. Before you know it, we would have a new 'business model' and would be entering a 'new paradigm.'" (Pg. 74)He observes, "Greenspan had been right---risk had truly been unbundled. We had just packaged it right back up and shoved it down the eager throats of the wealthy taxpayers of Orange County. Warren Buffett was also right---when the tide did finally go out, as it did rapidly in 1994, we learnt that Orange County was swimming naked." (Pg. 50) Later, he notes, "Some dealers warned Orange County about the risks they were running. At the time, Robert Citron regarded himself as a genius, encouraged in this belief by the dealers who were cashing in on his brilliance... Dealers love sophisticated investors. They are easy pickings." (Pg. 127) He concludes, "Who was paying for the party? It turned out to be Orange County taxpayers." (Pg. 214)He comments, "Traders become locked into a life that is focuses exclusively on work and making money. They dress well and live well. Their reading consists of work materials, an occasional business book... and the odd pulp fiction or spy novel at airports... They exist in an isolated world or premium class business travel, limo transfers and five-star hotels. Butlers, valets, maids, cooks, lifestyle assistants and personal trainers surround them. This becomes the reality of existence. Others perform the simple acts of living for them. They cease to be capable of doing anything for themselves." (Pg. 78) He observes, "There is a lot of activity around bonus time, very little of which has anything to do with trading... the day after the cheque clears there is frequently a glut of personnel announcements... Bonuses also drive spending. Luxury car dealers' fortunes are closely tied to the level of bonuses in banking..." (Pg. 147)He recounts that "a mathematician, had taught at the university and, tired of seeing his students earn far more than he did, joined the migration to banking. From time to time he visited his former academic colleagues to discuss the latest research. They were derisive about his job: they were involved in interesting work. The maths he used to model derivatives was trivial, undergraduate stuff. He consoled himself with the fact that he took home, in a good year, ten times what they made. He was a POW---a prisoner of Wall Street. It was about the money." (Pg. 183-184)The book can be somewhat disconcerting, in how it flits from one topic to another, interspersed with Das's personal recollections. Nevertheless, this is a fascinating (and somewhat prescient!) view of the derivatives and financial services industry, originally written just before the financial collapse of 2007-2009. It will be very welcome reading for anyone studying this era.

Many times I was ready to let this one go. Glad I persisted. It was worth reading, but I cannot say that he is successful in what he endeavors to achieve. You get only a brief glimpse into the world of derivatives. He loses a great opportunity in his example of an embedded reverse floating interest rate swap. All he had to say was that the investor is a counter party to himself in this piece of financial fluff. And then explain why. Because to the rest of us the world of financial engineering is seemingly worth trying to understand when the truth is that its creations are more inspired than believable. Or credible, since it all boils down to credere, to believe or to trust. And if you trust these wizards you deserve to lose all your worldly wealth and all your self-respect. Mr. Das is a wizard as well because he succeeded in selling you a book that he himself does not believe in.

This book made me realise how much half knowledge of derivatives I possessed prior to reading. But then I am not an expert, just a casual market participant (gulp).Does it matter? Even to an occasional observer of banks and financial systems (and therefore everything else that follows), I think it behoves us to appreciate the consequences of blind pursuit of risk and return. The leveraged market and its players is explained by its author in a lucid and at times darkly humorous sequence of anecdotes, diagrams and the odd formula. The author anchors what might have otherwise been a dry and esoteric discourse, to an Indonesian company dealing with the financial and legal consequences of a hedged transaction that goes horribly wrong. It has a personal element; loss of someone's capital. In fact the focus of the book is mostly about risk of catastrophic loss in a world with asymmetric knowledge. In a zero sum game someone must have won, but who? Clearly brokers and professional traders; else we are left to guess.If you believe that derivatives is a must know subject, then this book will provide useful insight. It's author is or was a market participant who thought about connections, including cause and effect relationships as they happened. I found those insights both useful and enjoyable, and more than a little disturbing.

Dr. J. Gordon Leishman holds the Minta Martin Chair of Engineering and is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. It presents an overview of recent rotor aerodynamic, acoustic and aeromechanical research and development and its application to the design of the overall vehicle, in simple and graphic terms that can be readily comprehended by people with little detailed knowledge of the helicopter.Accuracy has not suffered from the simplification process - the book's author, Prof Gordon Leishman, is one of the foremost researchers and experts in the rotorcraft field. He has used this expertise to explain the technology so that its logic is readily apparent. He also provides a very useful list of easily obtained references for deeper reading.But the book is much more than a guide to the technicalities of rotorcraft engineering, since it places the engineering and research topics into the context of the overall aircraft design and deals with how they affect the fundamentals of the vehicle's performance. The book contains a considerable amount of overall generalised performance data that gets to the core of what the helicopter is and what it offers to its customers and perhaps more important, what limits its performance and how its capabilities can be transformed by application of advances in technology.The book does not shirk from looking at the problem of how technology comes into being and is incorporated into the vehicle, either. The author reviews the success of recent trends in applying the technology to improving the vehicle and draws some uncomfortable conclusions. He then proposes strategies for improving results.As an engineer familiar with the field, I found this book very enjoyable and read it in one session. I discovered a few aspects of the subject that were new to me, but most important to me were the thought provoking questions on the development of the vehicle and the industry that the book raised.

This is a good book in learning about the many technical challenges that face the helicopter as an engineering system. A good amount of discussion shows the many tradeoffs and competing requirements which pose significant challenges in revolutionizing the helicopter. Attention is also given to our limited ability to understand the complex aperiodic nature of the flow, along with the complex interaction effects between the main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage. Next, the book discusses flow control methods along with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) taking on a more active role in helicopter design and analysis. The book ends with the over-arching emphasis of setting realistic government goals that radically shifts the conventional way of thinking on how helicopters are made. If the helicopter is to have drastic performance changes, the government, academia, and industry have to team together for the benefit of all.

About the Author

Kenneth R. Miller is Professor of Biology at Brown University. His research work on cell membrane structure and function has produced more than 50 scientific papers and reviews in leading journals, including CELL, Nature, and Scientific American. Miller is coauthor, with Joseph S. Levine, of four different high school and college biology textbooks which are used by millions of students nationwide. He has received 5 major teaching awards. In 2007 he was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received the Exploratorium's Outstanding Educator Award. He lectures widely and has appeared on NPR’s Science Friday and The Colbert Report.

If I were to recommend one popular book on evolution and creationism, this would be it. It is NOT just another critique of creationism and intelligent design (although it is very effective in this regard) but also offers a wider motivational analysis of the anti-evolutionists. The critique itself tends to be more technical than most, emphasizing DNA evidence.For example, some of the most convincing evidence is demonstrated by the genetic flaws of evolution. Although most mammals can synthesize Vitamin C, humans cannot and this is a clear disadvantage. Do we lack the gene for it? NO. We possess the GLO gene but it has been corrupted by mutations and no longer performs its task. Moreover, the gene is similarly corrupted in our closest relatives among the other primates! Intelligent design??Similar evidence is given in that humans have only 23 pairs of chromosomes whereas other primates have 24. And evidence of the awkward fusion of two pairs is shown to be very obvious.Echoing Daniel Dennett concerning Darwin and evolution, Miller wickedly comments “If I had to give a prize for the best idea that anyone in the antievolution movement has ever had, I’d award it to whomever came up with the term “intelligent design.”” He points out this term effectively masks what has historically been a religious appeal; moreover, it appeals to our hopes for purpose and meaning.But Miller makes a real effort to understand and sympathize with opponents. “Evolution strikes at the heart of who and what we are… Does evolution mean that we are nothing more than beasts?” Unfortunately, “it’s simply not a scientific question.” p 135So, could we simply give in and dispose of evolution? No. “evolution is … the glue that binds the biological sciences together.” p 195Miller sees a connection of intelligent design with post-modern critiques of the sciences, although the former is associated politically with the right, and the latter with the left. As Alan Bloom did in The Closing of the American Mind, he interprets the relativism of postmodernism as a fundamental attack on science and “the power of reason to seek truth.” Not so far from the aims of “intelligent design.”One quibble. IMHO the “quote” from St. Augustine on p 160-161is just too good to be true, too reminiscent of Darwin’s last sentence in The Origin of Species. Moreover, the reference to Only Six Numbers by Martin Rees ( p 103 in my edition NOT p 115 as cited) is a dead-end as Rees gives no reference. Couldn’t find it anywhere. If you find it, please comment.

Having read Dr. Kenneth Miller's wonderful book "Finding Darwin's God", I had high expectations for this book---and I was not in the least disappointed! I have already decided to purchase copies for my 3 sons, just as I did of "Finding Darwin's God". Having studied biology at MIT, and having taught college-level biology for 30 years, I found "Only a Theory" wonderfully interesting reading. It describes the intellectual/spiritual battle between "intelligent design" and evolution, reveals the weaknesses in ID's theory of "irreducible complexity", clearly presents irrefutable chromosomal/genetic evidence linking gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans to a common ancestor, and so much more! Dr. Miller's well-chosen examples and clearly-written explanations make it possible for anyone to understand the overwhelming evidence for Evolution, and yet he leaves open the possibility of faith.

If you are looking for a book that explains the theory of evolution thoroughly and debunks each and every argument of intelligent design, this is the book you should read. Author and Professor of Biology at Brown, Kenneth Miller writes with passion about science, writes in the vernacular and in a style that is engaging to the reader.He first provides a background of science and how it was so compatible with the independence of the United States. With the old European social order discarded and an American one yet to be defined, Americans felt the freedom to explore and discover the mysteries of science as well as their frontiers. Science provided the basis for achievement based on individual creativity and industry, and Americans provided scientific discovery decade after decade.A competing phenomenon is the faith of Americans that he describes in a Harris poll of 2005 where most believe in evolution when asked if plants and animals evolved. It was all the more striking when people responded negatively to evolution when asked if humans evolved the same way. Sixty-two percent of the respondents disavowed evolution, leaving the United States with the highest percentage of non-believers in the industrialized world with the exception of Turkey. The Harris poll is the kind of reaction Charles Darwin expected when he wrote, "The Origin of the Species," which might explain why human development is not described anywhere in the book. Only at the insistence of a friend did he put those thoughts to publication years later.Professor Miller comes from a long list of distinguished scientists who felt that their work and results spoke for themselves. They refused to get in the political debate over intelligent design, leaving the Discovery Institute to champion I. D. not through observation and evidence in the laboratory but by making a full court press in the legislature and with school boards.The actions of the Kansas school board in 1999 where they introduced intelligent design, and again in 2005 where they attempted to redefine science, plus the trial in Dover, PA. prompted him to write this book and challenge the Discovery Institute and I. D. head on. The Washington based institute created a strategy that came to be known as the wedge document. It was a political strategy for not just competing with the theory of evolution but eventually suppressing it and supplanting it with intelligent design in the classroom. Their proponents used relativism as their tactic. All truth is relative, and is based upon what one believes.This is where Professor Miller's passionate writing goes into overdrive. In clear, non-scientific language he tells the reader about the Cambrian period in which there was an explosion of organisms that evolved in the millions of species that exist today. Vertebrate embryos in fish, frog, chick, and mouse bear a striking resemblance in structure that was uncovered through the science of molecular genetics. Skeletal bones bear a striking resemblance between fish, bird, or human proving Darwin's theory that animals branched out into different species where many withered on the vine of extinction while other branches survived, changing constantly to keep up with an ever-evolving environment. The development of the eye, long a contention of the I. D. faithful, or so-called proof of a designer's complexity showed how the law of optics was driven by natural selection. Kenneth Miller also takes on Martin Behe's contention of "irreducible complexity" just as he did at the trial in PA showing how such organisms could adapt and change with the loss of one or more of their component parts. As designers have advocated, enzymes are highly specific, and cannot adapt or change because of the chemical compounds they process. This was debunked with nylon, whose compounds remain. Bacteria in these ponds of nylonase did exactly that; they evolved and fed off the nylon waste with perfect adaptation. One commentator was kind enough to write me, "I guess we just have to wait around a few million years, eh [for proof of macroevolution]. And meanwhile just accept those are true based on -- faith...." Actually, no we won't, and we have more than just faith. "We already know enough about the mechanisms of evolutionary change to account for the large-scale changes that produce genuine novelty," according to the author.Kenneth Miller brings his full weight of knowledge and intellect against intelligent design. Adaptation of light sensitive cells (for eye development) is proven. Evolution is only a theory? No, it's fact. Intelligent design in blood clotting is disproved. But his strongest argument against intelligent design as a science is its complacency that some things cannot be explained and as such should be attributed to an intelligent interventionist that cannot be explored, or should just be accepted as a supernatural phenomenon. To Miller, this is not a science but a dead end that brings discovery of medicine, naturalism, and who we are and where we came from to a dead end. Miller adds, if so many animals were intelligently designed, how come so many became extinct? Good question! But he admits that the greatest critics of evolution are scientists themselves. The "greatest hoax perpetrated on mankind in the past 150 years" according to Ann Coulter, Darwin's theory has been tested millions of times over in order to be proven wrong.The central fear of proponents of I. D. is that humans have no purpose, structure, conscience, or higher calling if they are the same as any other creature on earth. This Miller opposes sharply with an explanation that is almost spiritual. The human being could never be recreated in its present form if we returned to the Cambrian period millions of years ago and started over again. It was developed through the perfect timing of weather, fate, replication, and adaptation that made it what it is today, the most survivable organism on earth. Therefore, it has a purpose to guard its atmosphere and protect other species from their destruction by keeping the earth with all its atoms, compounds, and cycles in harmony with a fragile environment that is man's to save or destroy alone. I didn't have huge expectations for this inexpensive planner I was still disappointed. The cover is just cardstock which is thicker paper. It's shiny and the gold is not raised. It's part of the paper and is just printed on top. It's very cheap looking, even on the inside. I'll probably still keep it though because I like having the extra space for the task list. I bought the planner to track educational activities I do with my littles, and plan some work activities.
