Review

“[David] Mitchell is, clearly, a genius. He writes as though at the helm of some perpetual dream machine, can evidently do anything, and his ambition is written in magma across this novel’s every page.”—The New York Times Book Review   “One of those how-the-holy-hell-did-he-do-it? modern classics that no doubt is—and should be—read by any student of contemporary literature.”—Dave Eggers   “Wildly entertaining . . . a head rush, both action-packed and chillingly ruminative.”—People   “The novel as series of nested dolls or Chinese boxes, a puzzle-book, and yet—not just dazzling, amusing, or clever but heartbreaking and passionate, too. I’ve never read anything quite like it, and I’m grateful to have lived, for a while, in all its many worlds.”—Michael Chabon   “Cloud Atlas ought to make [Mitchell] famous on both sides of the Atlantic as a writer whose fearlessness is matched by his talent.”—The Washington Post Book World   “Thrilling . . . One of the biggest joys in Cloud Atlas is watching Mitchell sashay from genre to genre without a hitch in his dance step.”—Boston Sunday Globe   “Grand and elaborate . . . [Mitchell] creates a world and language at once foreign and strange, yet strikingly familiar and intimate.”—Los Angeles Times

I wanted to write a learned, articulate review of Cloud Atlas but I can’t. Some have reviewed this book here in beautiful prose that I can’t duplicate. I’m just not that smart and scholarly. But I know what I like and I didn’t like this book very much. First off, let me concede that the author David Mitchell is brilliant. His knowledge of the world and history and culture(s) is vast. I think he would be a perfect dinner guest; no doubt he would be the center of attention and delightfully entertaining. But this book is bogged down with his intellect. It’s far too manic and disjointed for me. It’s like watching Robin Williams playing Hamlet free-style. His characters’ digressions on the most mundane incidents and observations are far too frequent and distracting. I kept feeling that I have better things to do than continue with this book. And I don’t see the “deepness.” There are references of reincarnation but they are vague and seemingly unimportant to the story. I have to admit that I jumped around a little and didn’t actually finish the middle chapters (if you understand my “palindrome” reference, you’ll understand). So, “Aha! How can you give a decent review if you haven’t read the whole book?” Precisely. This isn’t a decent review: I didn’t read the whole book. Turns out I do have better things to do.Edit: Oh and another thing: for a man as learned as David Mitchell, I found his moralizing a tad sophomoric (not that I disagree with the spirit). For example, the Henderson Triplets (blue eyed and “gilded”) seem to serve no purpose other than to be racist straw men for Luisa Rey to demolish with a few pointed retorts. Much like Dixie Carter’s character in “Designing Women” as she allows the buffoonish white racist to go on, as if commiserating with a fellow racist, only to savagely turn on him with a devastating put down, to the delighted howls from the studio audience. No argument with the sentiment, just the cringe-worthy triteness of the scene.Or Preacher Horrox’s dissertation on “Civilization’s Ladder” (Dixie, enter stage right!!). Again, trite and predictable. And finally (spoiler alert) if you want the moral gist of the book, just read the last two pages.

'Transcendent' is likely the best word to describe Cloud Atlas, likely David Mitchell's most famous novel. In this book, Mitchell covers a wide variety of genre's, styles, and characters, an act that only the best of the best writers can pull off.The structure of Cloud Atlas involves six nested stories, each covering a different time period and type of writing. Each story is only told halfway, starting with Adam Ewing's pacific travelogue in 1850, then going to Robert Frobisher's period piece in 1930's Europe, Luisa Rey's action thriller in 1973, Timothy Cavendish's 'ghastly ordeal' in the early 2000's, Somni's sci-fi stry from 2144. and Zachary's more mystic island life tale from the far future. Each of these stories is written wonderful prose, who infuses humor, suspense, and horror as the plot calls for. Once all six stories reach the halfway point, they are finished in reverse order. All six of these stories are quite good in their own right. That isn't to say they don't have problems. The chief issue is pacing, with many of the stories feeling like they would have been better if given another 40 pages. Even with this, I would likely give each individual story a four-star rating, with my favorites earning a five on their own. However, it is the interplay between the stories that really put Cloud Atlas over the top. Like the Bone Clocks, all of these stories take place in the same universe, and connections abound, some obvious, a fair few more subtle. Themes are developed across the entire read, and the end result is a thing of beauty. I would recommend this book to any reader.

I have to say it's been years since I have felt so engaged reading a book. Oddly, I saw the movie before buying the Kindle book; and in the middle of reading, I decided to watch the movie again. I suspect it won't be long and I will read the book once again. This is a thinking person's book and story, and thus isn't for everyone. But the mastery of the writing is so highly evocative that you "see" the book as you read it. Incredibly deep characters, mesmerizing continuity of theme (which some might argue about, given that the book is written as segments contributing to a "writ large" story), the ability to make you laugh, cry and inevitably sigh, "yes."I had never heard of David Mitchell before reading this book. But it only took me 500+ pages to realize what an important writer and artistic voice he is.I am a strong supporter of public libraries, and have downloaded Kindle versions of books to determine if I will actually buy the book. In the case of Cloud Atlas, it was a no-brainer. I finished Cloud Atlas today and immediately downloaded "Ghostwritten" from my local library. I suspect it won't be long and my Kindle cloud will have all of his works in it.If you think and therefore read, and read to think, Cloud Atlas will keep your mind whirling. It's a must-read piece of literature. It's a truly gripping story.

I bought this book because it had been shortlisted for the Mann Booker prize. At first, it was puzzlingly, moving through six separate scenarios which span the past, near present, future and far future in vastly different situations but each tangentially related to each other, (some funny and some chilling). Then, the order reversed concluding each of the six stories. It all came together again in the last scenario, which returned to the first situation, a riff on the nature of humankind, how we treat each other and where our appetite for power and privilege will take us if we let it. That part is truly haunting and will stay with me for a long time. And that part is what makes this a great book, worthy of reading again and again. Like "1984" or "Brave New World." They missed the mark in not giving this the Mann Booker prize.

One of America’s most respected sportscasters—and the play-by-play voice of NBC’s Sunday Night Football—gives us a behind-the-curtain look at some of the most thrilling games and fascinating figures in modern sports. No sportscaster has covered more major sporting events than Al Michaels. During the course of his forty-plus-year career, he has logged more hours on live primetime network television than anyone in history, having covered all four major sports championships—the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA finals, and the Stanley Cup final—as well as the Olympic Games, the Triple Crown, and many more. He has witnessed firsthand some of the most memorable events in sports, and in this highly personal and entertaining account, he brings them all vividly to life.Michaels’s stories cover unforgettable chapters over the past half century—from the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics’ “Miracle on Ice” to the earthquake that rocked the 1989 World Series to the drama of what many consider the most exciting Super Bowl ever—Super Bowl XLIII between the Steelers and the Cardinals. Some of the biggest personalities on and off the field are here—Pete Rose, John Wooden, Brett Favre, Tommy Lasorda, O. J. Simpson, John Madden, Cris Collinsworth, Roone Arledge, Bill Parcells, Tiger Woods, Doc Rivers, Dennis Miller, and many, many more. Complementing access with insight, Michaels adds to the stories you thought you knew: Michael Jordan’s eyesight; Howard Cosell’s prickly, bombastic personality; even Peyton and Eli Manning’s sibling rivalry. From start to finish, Al Michaels gives us an up-close portrait of an industry that is—today more than ever—a vital part of our national culture.

Com'on Al, the point of buying the CD's was to hear your VOICE!! The box cover states "Read by Al Michaels and Ray Porter". I thought maybe Ray Porter was sitting with Al Michaels and contributing to the narrative. NO, it turns out Michaels only provides the first 9.5 minutes. The remaining 9 CD's (about 10 hours) are by Ray Porter. This really SUCKS. You can't narrate an event so tied to the voice of the announcer, that you recall from the Olympics, Super Bowl, boxing, etc., by a third party. Al Michaels had an opportunity to bring his emotions into the reading of this encyclopedia of magnificent sporting events and he hands it off to a cold monotone voice of a bystander. Nothing against Ray Porter, but he was placed in a position that was beyond him. If you want to get a better feel for the content, buy the book. At least your memory of Al Michaels' voice will come through your own experiences of him when it was live. What a wasted opportunity!

Al Michaels has been broadcasting since my teenage years. The book was a gift. I knew nothing about Michaels personally, but I’ve probably heard his voice for hundreds of hours. I’m not going to be a spoiler and list anything, but you’ve probably forgotten how many iconic events he’s called. I was shocked at how many non-football related occurrences were covered by Michaels. They are seared in your memory, you remember your feelings, you might even remember what the announcer said, but you forget it was Michaels that said it!The book works on a number of levels. The tone is light and breezy and sounds like his voice, giving the feeling that Michaels is telling the stories on some sort of broadcast. The content is interesting and linear. Again, I won’t be a spoiler but suffice to say there are a lot of surprises if you haven’t studied up on the man, namely, his Mr. Magoo-like propensity to accidentally end up at so many iconic events that he named his book “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up.” Yes, he put in his time and worked hard but he admits that being in the right place at the right time helped his career on multiple occasions.Michaels comes off as a nice guy but doesn’t tolerate fools or dishonesty. It was refreshing to read both his accolades for those he respects as well as his disappointments with others. It’s not a gossip book where he discusses the feelings of other folks. But he does report the facts, whether or not they might be inflammatory to those involved. His tone is one of bemusement, with interesting anecdotes rooted in his past and the occasional kitschy joke. For some reason, Michaels can throw down the kitsch but it still made me smile every time. The best thing about this book for me is the overall message to work hard to be the best at your craft, consider the honesty and integrity of those you are thinking of working with, place value in your family and life outside of work, and have fun the entire time--even if it means pulling a few pranks with or on your friends. The book was a lesson in gratitude. A surprisingly pleasurable read!

Al Michaels shares a wealth of his experiences in the world of sports and those who have influenced him over his storied career. We all have those in our lives who have given us a helping hand and Al Michaels first had his father and later on individuals such as Curt Gowdy and John Wooden who proved to be helpful. On the negative side were Jack Kent Cooke and Chick Hearns.Michaels experienced the polar differences in how teams were run with Sparky Anderson's Big Red Machine and the San Francisco Giants led by manager Charley Fox. In covering such a variety of sports with different networks Al Michaels worked with a number of different personalities ranging from Howard Cosell, O. J. Simpson, Ken Dryden, John Madden, Tim McCarver, Dan Dierdorf, Jim Palmer, and Frank Gifford to name a few. The book contains anecdotes on all of them. My favorite is one involving Howard Cosell on page 139 and 140 that is an absolute classic. I read it in another book on Cosell and Ali but it certainly warrants a retelling in this book.Anyone who has visions of becoming a sportscaster would do well to read this book. It's not always the glamorous job that one may envision. It includes countless meetings and hours of preparation and working well with personalities that may conflict with your own. I feel if you remember the years during the career of Al Michaels this will be a chance for you to relive the many dramatic moments that he covered in his storied career. This book is a very worthwhile addition to your sports library.

Terrific book! I admit, I've been a big fan of Mr. Michaels for many many years & this doesn't disappoint at all. I flew through this book in no time. The chapters devoted to Howard Cosell & O.J. Simpson were especially enlightening. I thought he had a rather negative view of Cosell before, but it is more positive in here than I thought & he expresses sympathy & even sadness at how Cosell ended up. I didn't know any of the O.J. stuff before so it was quite interesting. I always liked Al Michaels because I think he's so knowledgeable, enthusiastic without being overbearing, geniune & for that industry, relatively ego-free. I miss him on baseball tremendously for the last almost 20 years, it's a real loss that he's not involved anymore, but I guess you can't do everything. He's one of only a handful of talented announcers in my view who can do any major sport & do it exceedingly well (like Marv Albert, Keith Jackson, & Vin Scully (terrific on football back in the day too)). Mr. Michaels projects being a very cool, decent, engaging family man & it comes through in this book. Highly recommended.

Not bad but my toddler and kids love the pictures in the Beginner's Bible by Kelly Pulley.

Love love LOVE this book. Honestly it sat around on the shelf for a couple years, as my older kids never really got into it. But my 9 year old son decided on his own that he wanted me to read a page per night to him before bed. It has become one of my favorite daily routines and I really look forward to spending this time with him each night. We're almost done with the book now and it makes me sad because I don't want the tradition to end, but I thank God for giving me this opportunity. Have to look for another book like this I guess.Anyway, this book does a great job of walking through the Bible and hitting most of the high points. There is no editorializing, which is to say, the authors never attempt to overlay any specific interpretations or opinions - it's just stories from the bible, in language that kids can understand. My son is now 10 years old and he can grasp these stories well, yet they don't talk down to him. I think probably 8-12 years old is about the right age range. Each story is condensed to one page, and there are 2 or 3 questions in the footer to see if your kid was paying attention. It helps if you, the parent, are at least passingly familiar with these stories, as you can help paint a fuller picture. But if you're not, that's OK too, as you will certainly learn something! Highly recommended!

When it comes to teaching children about the Bible, there are so many ways and programs available. My children are too young to understand direct readings from the Bible, and they still have frightfully short attention spans. The sentences have a bit of a staccato effect in that they are short sweet and to the point- just how toddlers like it. The vocabulary used is simple yet effective, so the words you are reading are likely to be recognized by younger children. There is no 'story within a story' where they use fairy tales to compare what is going on in the Bible story, it is straightforward. This may seem dull to some children, but I find that using an animated voice to read and hand motions to show concepts like big and small really helps. If you are looking for a way to give younger children a firm foundation of God's Word, I highly recommend this book. I mean, for less than three bucks it is definitely worth the gamble to find out for yourself.

Jesse Hurlbut has done us a great service by producing what is in reality a condensed bible with lots of little illustrations.I bought 365 Read Aloud Bedtime Bible Stories to read to my 4 year old, but the language in the book is not simplified enough for very young children. It is at the level of, say, The Good News Bible. However, I'm really enjoying reading this one myself now! The author has given us a 365 page "Best Of The Bible", which moves fromI really feel that this book really fills a need as a legitimate Bible primer, for all ages. It certainly doesn't insult the adult, but children from 10 years can also enjoy it on their own. And I have not seen any better introduction to all the main story lines of both Old and New Testaments. This book is a bargain, and mine now has its own place among my various Bibles, but I do think there is an opportunity for the book to be re-titled as a unique Bible primer for all ages, with the world's easiest 365 day reading plan!

These are awesome, the price is perfect and the book has easy to read stories that are not boring and get the Bible stories across to the youngest reader. I am ordering more so my Church can give them out to all the children. Update: my 9 year old took this book to camp and came home telling me all about Moses. I couldn't believe how much he remembered. This is a child that hates school hates reading and selectively remembers things. I am so happy with this beginners bible. I have ordered about 30 and continue to order as I fgind the need. Our cvhurvh puts these into blessing boxes. What's so great is as long as a child can read, these books are simple enough they don't need an adult to read it for them. This is great for the nonbelievers we are giving them to. I just can't say enough about this book! My children love answering the questions after each day. And they never let me read just one day! I am even getting these for teenagers as I find it much easier to understand for beginners. I personally had trouble reading the bible when I was young, had I had this bible I would have had a foundation once I was old enough to comprehend a typical Bible.

Very nice. My daughter will get years of use out of this book!

Reading through this with my kindergardener. One page per story and a couple quick questions at the end of each one.Sometimes she likes he stories and sometimes she doesn't. But we get to learn about much of the Bible that is important for the foundation of their overall understanding of it later. And on those nights when she says in a hilariously over-dramatic tone "are there gonna be questions at the end again?" We just make it a point to read a story and not build an association with "work" to read the Word. I want her to enjoy it. Shoot, sometimes I don't feel like sitting down to read my Bible either. But this book makes it fun to read together with my kids. Recommend it to others.

my 7 & 11 yr olds love this book. they read it every night. there are about 3 questions after every short story - the stories are about 2-5 paragraphs long.

This book was very cheap so I purchased 2 to give away. The illustrations are terrible (where there are any) and the stories are not written well. It would be better to just use a Children's Bible.

I enjoyed this story -- the characters seemed real enough, and I think that young adults would like the cast of characters as well. I get bit weary of the stereotype parents on the reservation, however (alcoholic) ... but I have been on a number of reservations, and the situations there are indeed difficult and somewhat despairing if one looks only at the surface. When we dig deeper and allow the full character of a person to emerge, with all of her indecision, bad choices, efforts, and small triumphs, the life lessons are useful to just about anyone. Jemmy spoke to the multifaceted human being, and she was "right on" about that.

Item exactly as described. Seller was very helpful and concerned with customer satisfaction. Already read the book and it is great, as is everything by Hassler. Enlightening. Thank you.

I read this book when I was 7 or 8...and I still remember it (15 years later!)! This was one of my favorite books as a little girl.

This may be restricted to just the Kindle version of Paddy's book, but I'm extremely disappointed that there don't seem any photosanywhere! The verbal images of these things and places about which Paddywaxes so poetically certainly whet one's appetite but, damn it, afew visual connections would have made the purchase so muchmore worthwhile! In the end, though, it's a major disappointment. Don't buy it.

Great information and easy to read!

How I wish I had found this wonderful book before my love affair with Malta began. Having bought and read every guide book I could find before my first trip, I innocently believed I was knowledgeable of all the 'tourist sights' that this fabulous island has to offer - that was until I read this travel guide by Paddy Cummins. Not only does this lovely book include both the famous and secret gems of Malta, it is beautifully written in such a way that you just know that the author is literally 'In Love with Malta.' Paddy Cummins entices you to read his book, not just as a travel guide but as a story - the story that is Malta and its history, its culture and its people, that will make any reader immediately go online and book a flight to what is indeed a Hidden Treasure.by Nicola Kearns (Author of 'Under a Maltese Sky').

The Antlered Ship, by Dashka Slater Terry Fan

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—A fox sets sail in search of answers to questions about life, the universe, and everything in this picture book fantasy. Marco the fox wonders about many things, but the other foxes are more concerned with chicken soup than with philosophy. When an antlered ship appears, captained by deer traveling to an island of "tall, sweet grass and short, sweet trees," Marco seizes the opportunity to seek out other foxes who may have answers. The crew sails across treacherous seas, triumphing over sharp rocks and fierce pirates before arriving safely at Sweet Tree Island. Alas, there are no foxes to be found, and Marco's travels have only yielded more questions. Yet, he also has new friends and the chance for further adventures—perhaps that is enough. Slater's adventure narrative is an epic journey with a classic feel, perfectly scaled for a picture-book audience. The straightforward text is lyrical, rhythmic, and begs to be read aloud. Graphite-and-pen illustrations by the Fan Brothers depict expressive, realistically drawn animals sporting the occasional hat or bandanna. As the distinctive prow of the antlered ship sails through ethereal seascapes, young audiences can follow its path through the detailed maps included on the endpapers. VERDICT Marco's discovery that the world is full of questions, but not always answers, is at once profound and entirely accessible to young audiences. Make this gently thrilling celebration of life's big questions a first-purchase.—Chelsea Couillard-Smith, Hennepin County Library, MN

Review

Fan brothers bring their arresting artistry, first seen in The Night Gardener (2016), to Slater’s tale of Marco, an inquisitive fox searching for answers in the wider world. Marco’s rather philosophical mind is teeming with questions: “Why don’t trees ever talk? How deep does the sun go when it sinks into the sea?” The unexpected arrival of a large ship—adorned with a magnificent masthead of a stag’s tree-like antlers—offers Marco the chance to seek out the answers his fellow foxes can’t provide. Marco joins the ship's deer crew, along with a flock of adventurous pigeons, and the animals set sail for Sweet Tree Island. Their journey is fraught with stormy seas, paltry meals, sharp rocks, and a pirate hoard, but once safely on the island Marco gains some insight at last. Finely detailed illustrations in graphite and ballpoint pen evoke the dramatic moments of Slater’s story as effectively as the contemplative, such as when turbulent greengray seas give way to a star-studded sky, or in the peachy sunset washing over Marco and his new friends. Young readers will revel in the whimsical touches, like the peg-legged pigeon sailor and the imaginative map gracing the book’s endpapers. This gorgeous, eye-opening adventure is an engrossing reading experience that proudly touts curiosity and finding friendship in kindred spirits. — Julia Smith (Booklist, STARRED REVIEW June 1, 2017)A philosophical fox full of questions boards a ship with strangers and discovers that finding friends is even better than finding answers. Russet-furred Marco wonders about everything. His fellow foxes care mainly about dinner. When a great, antlered wooden ship, captained by a deer named Sylvia, docks in the harbor, Marco goes down to see it. Intrigued by the possibility of finding other foxes who share his curiosity, Marco decides to set sail, as do an adventurous flock of pigeons led by Victor, pictured as a one-legged bird in a bandanna. While they struggle a bit with the unfamiliar tasks and are beset by the typical dangers that sailors face, Marco, Sylvia, and Victor each contribute to the success of their journey. In the mostly dreamy, delicate pen-and-pencil illustrations, colored digitally, Marco the fox and the other animals are shown as sapient but not completely anthropomorphized. The antlered ship is delightfully detailed and decorated, the pirates our heroes encounter are appropriately toothy and threatening (even the cutlass-wielding mouse), and the sepia-colored maps on the endpapers feature deliciously evocative names. The old-fashioned appearance of the Fans' artwork perfectly suits Slater's contemplative, musing tone. While the ending is hardly a surprise, it feels right, true, and not the least bit clichéd. A beautifully composed package filled with whimsy and wisdom—the story of this unique vessel will inspire and entertain thoughtful listeners. (Picture book. 4-7) (Kirkus, STARRED REVIEW 7/15/17)Marco, a fox, thirsts to know everything: “Why don’t trees ever talk? How deep does the sun go when it sinks into the sea?” A ship appears off the coast of Marco’s forest. It’s crewed by deer (they’re poor sailors, they admit), and its figurehead is a stag with a massive set of antlers. Together with a flock of pigeons, Marco embarks on a nautical adventure in hopes of locating foxes who can answer his questions. The sailors encounter storms, dangerous rocks, and pirates before finding the island refuge they seek. In spreads that evoke seafaring motifs from the Odyssey to Treasure Island, the Fan brothers (The Night Gardener) lavish care on every delicate detail, from the ship’s rigging to the foam on the waves. Breathtaking seascapes alternate with cozy scenes below decks as predators and prey huddle peaceably. Slater (Escargot) creates a story to lose oneself in, an adventure packed with risk and possibility. The ship becomes a community, and Marco and his questions part of its journey. What a delightful book and story! As with The Night Gardner, there is amazing art on every single page. AND there is a map on both the inside front and back covers...to trace and follow this seafaring adventure. On top of it all, not only does the book have a beautiful jacket; but it also looks beautiful "naked". I mean, what can be better than that? This is a wonderfully told story of friendship and inquisitiveness of one little fox who has soooo many questions that he goes on a sailing adventure with the most unlikely of crew in search for answers. For me, it was the illustrations that tied the story together. The blending and shading of colour is beautiful. But even more, it is the depiction and expressions of the animal characters that bring the story to life. Why is it that a story of talking animals is more memorable, powerful and seems to make so much more sense than one with people?

As a grandmother who has continued to collect illustrated children's books even though my children are old enough to be grandparents, it was the cover of The Antlered Ship that caught me. I offer no apology for having judged this book by its cover for its promise is fulfilled. Less immediate has been my appreciation of the text, but after repeated out loud re-reads over several days, pacing my reading to the page art, I have no reservations as to how well words and image are wedded. For me, the book is an absolute joy.

I adored The Night Gardener by the Fan Brothers. Here is another beautifully created story with their illustrations, this time written by Daska Slater. We first meet Marco, a beautiful fox, a questioner, with no other fox companions who will answer his questions. Or when they do, it is with disinterest. He asks things like “Why do some songs make you happy and others make you sad?” This “antlered” ship is immediately intriguing as it wanders to land, with three deer disembarking and sharing that they’re lost. Marco, a few pigeons, a bear and a moose greet them and discover a seaworthy crew is needed. Marco thinks he must join them to search for other foxes in order to answer some of his questions. The pigeon, Victor, says his flock will also join in, “to have adventures.” The adventure begins, and the questions continue as they work hard, then venture into a great storm. “Why is water so wet?” The rest of the story satisfies as challenges are met and overcome and the mysteries of the voyage are resolved, but we are left with questions. The map on the endpapers helps the reader follow the voyage, and guess what might be next. It’s a fascinating and gorgeous book!

Take any number of picture books published in a given year. Read them all, cover to cover. Digest them. Ponder them. Then, I have no doubt, you’ll want to sort them. You’ll want to categorize them in some way. Maybe it’ll be the same rote categorizations we see all the time. Maybe you’ll get a little goofy. You may, for example, begin to notice how many books involve bespectacled mice breaking down the fourth wall, or a plethora of sentient cheese. But if you take a step back and broaden the fields a little, you can look at picture books in terms of scope. One genre that particularly entices me is the quest picture book. At anywhere between 32 and 48 pages, it would seem impossible that a picture book storyline would have the ability to send its hero on a quest. Yet time and time again, to varying degrees of success, authors and artists have sent their wayward characters off on noteworthy adventures. The latest book to slot neatly into this category is “The Antlered Ship.” A gorgeous epic filled with equal parts adventure and philosophy, this is one of those books that hankers to be an instant classic and comes darn well close to the mark.It was Marco that saw the antlered ship when it arrived, lost, at his island’s harbor. Until then he had found that for all that he was bursting with questions about the world (“Why don’t trees ever talk? Why is water so wet?”) none of the other foxes on his island ever took any interest in answering them. Perhaps if he joined the ship and set forth to sail to sea he’d find an island where foxes thought the way he did. The journey, however, is not without peril. The deer that crew it are a fearful bunch and the pigeons that sign on uneasy with the amount of work involved. It is Marco who steers them out of storms and misery. It is the pigeon Victor that leads the ship through the sharpest of rocks. And it is the deer Sylvia gives the orders to fight off piratical invaders. In the end, Marco does not find what he thought he was looking for. He finds something better. He finds friends and a purpose. So what does a quest picture book entail? Well, first and foremost you need to bond the reader to the main character. This can happen any number of ways. You might see the hero being kind to a friend, as in “Nobody Likes a Goblin” by Ben Hatke. Or you might make them sympathetic in some way. In “Journey” by Aaron Becker we see a girl try and fail to get the attention of her mother, father, and older sister. The child reader, regardless of whether or not they have siblings or parents of their own, can relate. Similarly, in “The Antlered Ship” the fox character is different from its compatriots. The other foxes aren’t mean to it or anything, but when it asks questions ranging from the mundane to the philosophical they respond with honest bafflement. He doesn’t fit in. And instantly we understand why he must leave. Next the adventure must involve travel in some way. Ships do very well in these narratives. "Three Bears in a Boat" by David Soman, for example, knew this. Finally, there's the ending. Either the hero goes home, the quest over, or the quest itself is the goal. I think you'll understand which of these apply to this book. Not every picture book makes me think long and hard about its moral but “The Antlered Ship” really gave me food for thought. Not initially, though. The first time I read it I found it visually stimulating but less than entirely enthralling from a storytelling perspective. Happily this feeling changed when I read the book to my small children. Suddenly I found the text improved massively when I was able to read it aloud. This proved to be most true when Marco feels that he has failed in his quest and discusses the matter with Sylvia and Victor. His goal was to find people like himself that are interested in big questions. As it turns out, Sylvia and Victor are not averse to Marco’s questions and are even willing to debate them with him. When he asks, “And what’s the best way to find a friend you can talk to?” they proffer ideas until he concludes, “… I think you make friends by asking them questions.” That’s such an interesting idea to me. It’s basically saying that friendship is largely rooted in showing interest in people outside of yourself. In moving beyond your own self-centered worldview. Not a bad lesson for a picture book, eh?It seems funny to delay it this long, but I haven’t really said anything about the art so far, have I? This is particularly odd when you consider that for many people the art is going to be the primary draw of the book. The Fan Brothers rose to prominence when their previous book “The Night Gardener” (not to be confused with the Jonathan Auxier novel of the same name) appeared on a slew of Mock Caldecott and Best Of lists. Suddenly everyone was very interested in what these Fan Brothers might do. For my part, I liked “The Night Gardener” perfectly well but it didn’t quite do it for me. You know that feeling you get when you know an author or an illustrator is capable of so much more than their most recent project? I knew these guys had an “Antlered Ship” inside somewhere. I just had to wait around long enough to see it.And what a visual feast this puppy is too. First and foremost its publisher, Beach Lane Books, has spared no expense in its make-up. They’ve even gone so far as to spend extra money to make the book as pleasant a tactile experience as it is a visible one. Go on. Touch the cover. Feel the high caliber paper stock. I don’t mean to be beholden to blatant pandering on the part of a publisher, but combining that feel with that cover image is a rare bit of marketing genius. Then we get to the art. Where “The Night Gardener” relegated itself primarily to blues and blacks and grays, “The Antlered Ship” is a dawn and magic hour story. No sky is ever a clear baby blue. They are are rose and peach at down, gray and white in storms, deep navy and white at night, and sometimes that strange misty white you get on a day when the sky isn’t really any color at all. Watch what the Fan Brothers do with their skies as the book progresses. There’s a method to their madness here. The delicacy of the images is also of particular note. Watching the care with which they render not just the antlered ship but also the ship of the invading pirates I was reminded of that old seafaring picture book classic, “The Island of the Skog” by Steven Kellogg. That book too took an interest in sailing and small woodland creatures. Here, the meticulousness of the Fan pens and pencils is not limited to rigging and figureheads. The animals also show a great deal of loving care. The first time you officially meet Victor and his pigeon crew you get a very good look at the iridescent feathers that grace their throats. Rock pigeons are such lovely creatures, it’s nice to see them get their due. The art is also not without humor. I have spent more time than I care to mention staring at deformed pigeon feet on the streets of Manhattan, so giving a pigeon a peg leg seemed an act of mercy as well as humor. Oh. And I should note that if you’re thinking long and hard about how precisely deer and pigeons would go about raising and lowering the sails on a boat as massive as this one, then maybe this is not the book for you.If I have any objection to the book, it is the ending. Not that the ending is bad or falls flat necessarily. It just happens to be about four pages too long. Slater actually caps off the book’s text perfectly when she writes, “There were so many questions left to answer. And so many more to ask.” The first time I read this aloud I remember giving a satisfied sigh… until I turned that page and found that inexplicably the book was still going. What valuable information is contained on those last four pages? Just the fact that the friends are, indeed, still sailing on the ship together, just as they’d discussed before. Now I know all too well that picture books are hampered considerably by page counts that they cannot shift, no matter how much they’d like to. That’s one of the reasons I like them so much. Just the same, there are workarounds. Wordless breathtaking spreads are one magnificent way of taking care of the issue. The way the book stands now, it feels like the author doesn’t trust the reader to accept that the birds, deer, and fox will continue their adventures and that we need some kind of visual proof.Like all good adventure tales the story begins with a hero’s quest and takes that hero not to their intended destination, but to what they were actually searching for deep down all along. In this way, the adventure book is not all that different from an adult novel. Joseph Campbell would, I like to think, approve of “The Antlered Ship”. It is, I should note, a quiet adventure, best suited to bedtimes and one-on-one readings rather than exciting group readalouds. But for those children that are allowed to dive deep into its sweetly saturated pages, the book has the capability of sequestering its images deep into the innermost folds of their little brains. This is a book that will find its ways into their dreams for decades upon decades upon decades to come. Could a book ask for anything more? For ages 4-7

A wonderful story about being inquisitive, making friends, and adventure. The Fan Brothers artwork in this book is gorgeous and doesn't disappoint!

This book is incredibly creative and different. My son begged to read it every night when it first arrived. The illustrations are stunning and the story is absolutely charming.

This is a spectacularly illustrated story about adventure, journey and friendship. It is told lovingly about a fox setting out on an adventure on a boat run by deer. Pidgins are added to the mix. Fox has many questions to answer about life. He is seeking out other foxes to give him his answers. He discovers that he can share adventure, make friends and seek answers from other animals. This book provides a good opportunity to discuss important questions and feelings with children.

Awesome illustrations, storyline is a little weak from an adult perspective. My 4 year old grandson informed me however, that this was his favorite book! Soooo....
