I bought this is a Christmas present for a relative who fixes up and sells cars. It's printed on nice, heavy, glossy paper. The book is divided into sections starting with early cars (through 1920), and then with a section for each decade thereafter. AT the beginning of each section is a double page with small pictures of representative cars from that decade, each labelled, and then closer looks at cars from that decade. It's well done. There are descriptions of the workings of an internal combustion engine, but they are not too technical. This book is very nice for anyone who likes cars, or, really, for someone who enjoys looking at the progression of something which is really central to our lives today.

Perfect for my car - enthused 4 year old! My husband thought American cars in it are limited (if that matters to you) but there are some. It is excellent with big pictures and an index when he wants to find the Lincoln Zephyr. Highly recommend.

This was actually a gift for my three year old daughter and my husband for Christmas! My daughter and husband are both obsessed with cars. This has been one of the best car books I he looked through- it is a complete history! Both have spent hours looking and reading about all the cars. I like how the book is separated by decade!

Bought this for Christmas for both my dad and father-in-law, both who are interested in cars in general and classic cars. The quality is much better than I had hoped for. The book is very heavy, the type people used to leave out on their coffee table. Very nice quality pages and photography inside. Both were very pleased with their gift.

My son loves cars so I got this book for him. He loves it. All the photos through the years are cool for him to check out and the mini write-ups about each car's history are fun for dad. If you're a car lover don't miss this one.

Nice. I liked this one. For some reason, I recognize the name Rojack, and I loved the murder mystery touch to it. There were some minor formatting errors, but mostly typos and not grammatical issues. However, the only reason I gave it five stars is because I liked the small link to noob's past. One tip for future books, you got away with mixing games in this one, but in Rojack's blast from the past, I thought Noob was talking. Let me start by stating that I am in love with Maria Popova. I heard her at the 92nd street Y last year, and read Brain Pickings every Wednesday and Sunday. I am a fanboy. Thus I eagerly awaited Figuring. The book attempts to establish intellectual songlines of a diverse group of scientists and poets, mostly women, over some four centuries.The problem with the book (I am giving up on it at p93) is that most of the connections are slight at best; something along the line of... "and could it be merely coincidence that X and Y both use the conjunctive "and" in their writing, and as far as we can determine, both put salt in their soup, thus prefiguring FDA guidelines by a century...What seems to work well in short pieces which gesture at intellectual congruence falls apart in this more extended format, becoming a sort of intellectual ADHD.I will continue to read this most gifted and thoughtful author, and am sorry the current work fails me (clearly it hasn't for other reviewers)If anyone wants a pristine copy I will send it to you for the price of postage--you may have better luck.

I’ve never felt more grateful for the existence of a writer. This book is about science, humanity,love, ideas, beauty. There is a refreshing alignment of science with art, in that science is essentially organic art- that is if we judge art to be what inspires. And, it’s about the precious vulnerable smallness we get to feel when astounded by the wonder of the big sky of the anatomy of a daffodil or the upending of love. Maria Popova brings the scientist’s of wonder to life, especially women scientists, who are otherwise unknown (zest least to me). Maria Popova is a scientist of human hearts. She she holds out, with great care, for us to see, what is sweet and tender in the hearts of these greatest of minds. By humanizing their greatness, she lets us see the beautiful in every human, in myself. A main theme is beauty - the people she writes of are driven to genius when awestruck by beauty. And the theme of beauty is within Maria Popova’s gorgeous writing. Very gorgeous, inspiring, and a sense that every word is infused with profound respect and love for her subjects and for the ideas. You’d figure a book about science, poetry, history, love, and everything else human, would get bogged down. It doesn’t. It’s the smoothest read. It feels graciously offered.

The first sentence alone is worth the price of this beautiful work of art. I read it over and over, and then typed it up and sent it to a friend. I'm going to commit it to memory, it's that breathtaking. This book is a treasure. Thank you, Maria Popova!!

I don't think I've ever reviewed a book I haven't finished yet, but I feel compelled to fan the flames of this incredible offering. This book, Maria's Muse, is at once (from the first deliciously long sentence): Captivating, Inspiring, Eloquent, Whimsical and Deeply Satisfying. Like beholding and having the first taste of an authentic 11-course Chinese meal, I'm swooning with anticipation of the delights to come. As a fan of "Brain Pickings" I sense what I'm in for, yet also feel certain I'm poised for a transformational experience amidst Ponderables, Ideas and Catalystic Tidbits.

I was amazed that someone with type O blood would actually benefit from red meat.We hadn't had red maeat in our diets for ten years when I purchased the book.Since, my husband and I both are type O I wanted to check this out.We have now started eating grass-fed red meat almost daily. The pictures look like photo copies that got cut off at odd places that got put into a book. I don't think I will give this to my step-mom who has lung cancer because a couple of the sayings comments made it sound like "you can beat it if you want to" which I think is really offensive to someone with cancer. Some of the pictures do look like they would be fun and relaxing to color but maybe more for someone who does not have an advanced or terminal form of cancer so I guess I can hold onto it until it fits someone we know better or donate it.

I’ve never had an “adult coloring book”, so I have no basis of compassion to other books. I got this to help pass the time when I start chemo. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars, is that at least 2 of the quotes are repeated within a few pages of each other (they at least have 2 different designs).

We enjoy coloring it on chemo days.

This book is perfect to pass time for those long chemo treatments - occupies the mind and provides inspiration!

My Mom just started chemo treatment and this brought a little chuckle out of her. Just a fun way to pass the time during treatment.
