Journalists Alexander Wolff and Armen Keteyian show the underside of college basketball recruiting in this still relevant and hard-hitting book. As many know, the key to winning is recruiting the top players. Since the NCAA forbids paying athletes in cash - recruiters, scouts, coaches, and hustlers have alternative methods for landing the top jocks. As the authors show, those methods include gifts of athletic shoes, summer camps, and fun-filled recruiting trips. Parents of top athletes and their high school coaches sometimes receive dollars, favors and/or jobs. I particularly liked the authors' description of Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro, who skillfully exploits the process with his popular athletic shoes. Simply put, the game is awash in corruption,Many realize that amateurism - paying athletes not in cash but with scholarships - is unworkable in big-money sports. Others know that too many top players leave college without a pro contract, and with little education. We fans may enjoy college basketball, but that cannot obscure the sport's dark underside.

I'd start by saying, for most of my adult life, Eugene Peterson has been a guiding light and a model of faithful Bible interpretation and faithful living. That said, I've been disappointed in Traveling Light on a couple of broad fronts especially related to its appeal to young people.First, it's wordy. He seems to say in multiple paragraphs what he could have said as well in one well-constructed paragraph. This seems like one article or one short sermon series, expanded into a book.Second, it seems uncomfortable with much nuance in the relationship between freedom and church structure/process. While it's certainly true that church structure and process CAN be stifling and were used in an attempt to stifle Paul, Dr. Peterson's narrative doesn't acknowledge that not every newcomer to a church has Paul's mandate and maturity and that the early church defined roles and processes as a way of "discerning and discipling".True, structure should not dominate or be used to stifle Spirit-inspired innovation, but it has important uses and, even with young people, it has an appeal. It's interesting, for example, the movement of young people toward the Anglican or Catholic or Orthodox churches which are on the high end of the structure/tradition continuum and the increased use of liturgy in churches with non-liturgical traditions. Finally, for young people it may be a true solution to a problem they don't acknowledge. A central thrust of the book, while absolutely true, seems to be in need of re-framing with young adults. Although the message of freedom from sin through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ speaks to me and people of my generation, that message may be less persuasive to younger people who have grown up with LOTS of freedom and too many choices and a limited sense of moral constraint. As Paul did on Mars Hill, writers wanting to reach young people may benefit from beginning with acknowledging what they believe or need, which for this group may benefit from a focus on Christianity as the source a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as an all-wise and caring mentor who leads you into all truth, including the truth of the need for salvation from sin.Again, I'm grateful to Eugene Peterson for his writings and insights across the years, and I understand that this book was not intended solely for young people, but, IMHO, is not one of his best books.

My personal testimony is that this book, with the emphasis of God's glorious gift of freedom through his Son, has been a solid anchor in both my life and in my adult daughter's life. That is a statement no critic can refute. Think of that, a different generation who can share the love of Christ because of Peterson's work! Marvelous! I would not trade that relationship for silver or gold.Is Peterson ever too wordy for me? Perhaps now and then. But on the flipside, my vocabulary (and more importantly, the increased capacity to see large Christ-based themes) has been greatly enhanced and now I am able to read his other books with much less effort and a greater appreciation for the love of God. True, a growing vocabulary's benefits come with the cost of personal effort. But your effort is never alone. The Spirit gives you capacity for thoughts that you could never come up with on your own.The final chapter of the necessity of death before resurrection is a wonderful description of Paul's life: "I die daily. Repentance does not come without the death of the old life..... every day.

Eugene Peterson opens up the meaning of Galatians for me. His writing style makes the content easily understood and engages the reader in deeper contemplation of the book.

Brings new insights into the meaning of Paul's letter. Not your traditional views!

This is a great book. One of my favorites by Peterson. I recommend it, buy it used and pass it on.

The early transcript for his now world-famous paraphrase...plus reflections. Outstanding.

Clear, concise, and very motivating with many stories of how lives are changed. Peterson is a master writer with the ability to mix the "good news" of the New Testament with contemporary living.

this is in useable. Neat

John Prendergast and Fidel Bafilemba. Congo Stories: Battling Five Centuries of Exploitation and Greed. NY: Grand Central Publishing, 2018.This is an activist's book—for activists, and by activists—although it should interest anyone having a concern about Congo. John Prendergast has been fighting the battles for justice and peace in Africa for decades. You might remember his efforts to stop the slaughters being carried out in the Darfur region of Sudan, and the atrocities of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. He has been intensely working for peace and justice in Congo for some years now, and this book, written with Fidel Bafilemba of Congo, summarizes the areas of concentration of his efforts and specific ways the readers can join in the struggle. The essential point in all this information is to present what action can and should be taken, and why. This is a book of 334 pages with medium-sized print, large margins, and contributions by Ryan Gosling, Chouchou Namegabe, Soraya Aziz Souleymane, Dave Eggers, Sam Ilus, Sasha Lezhnev, Annie Callaway, and Namegabe Murhabazi. In addition, the brief testimonies of numerous Congolese are included, many full-page photographs both in color and black and white, an annex of statistics, footnotes on the sources, and an index. Prendergast is the voice pulling all these aspects together. The many atrocities committed against the people of Congo are presented by the victims of those atrocities from eastern Congo—gang rape, sex slavery, and more. Tribute is paid to the efforts of (now known) Nobel Peace winner Dr. Denis Mukwege, who works on repairing the physical and mental damage suffered by the thousands of women treated at his Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, that large city on the shores of Lake Kivu on Congo's eastern border. The authors begin by placing today's conflicts in historical context, beginning five centuries ago when the Atlantic Slave Trade was ravaging the Kingdom of Kongo in what is now western Congo and northwestern Angola, as Europeans sought to develop plantations in the New World. This is followed by chapters on the Congo Free State with King Leopold of the Belgians' exploitation of Congo for rubber for the automobile industry and for ivory. The Belgian Congo era saw the need for copper during World War I, and for uranium for atomic bombs during World War II. After independence in 1960 the Cold War ravaged Congo, as the superpowers sought control of its copper, uranium, and other minerals. Finally in more recent years, the pressure of the need for tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold for cell phones, laptops, video games and other products, as well as diamonds, led to the current demands for Congo's resources. Oil, ivory, and cobalt (for lithium batteries) are very much in demand these days. The 2010 UN Group of Experts found that in the Kivus almost every mining deposit was controlled by an armed group, and they were committing such brutalities as sex slavery, child soldier recruitment, and murder. The UN estimated that almost all of Congo's artisanally produce gold was smuggled out of the country. It went out mainly through Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. And from there to Dubai. Then to North America, Europe, and India. "Conflict gold continues to finance armed groups and corrupt army officers and officials in Congo and the region." (53)The 2013 UN Group of Experts findings suggested that rebel and [Congolese] state army commanders oversaw and orchestrated rape and sexual enslavement while in effective control of their subordinate troops. Among other findings, the authors conclude that four minerals are now the main guilty ones in the resource curse—3 T's of tin, tantalum, tungsten, plus gold. They maintain that the supply chain is shaped like an hourglass. At the restricted part are smelters and refiners."If the end-user companies could pressure the smelters to change their purchasing decisions, to require that the rock ore minerals they purchased to process must come from conflict-free mines in Congo, we posited, that could dry up a major source of income for armed groups and army commanders in Congo." (235)The Catholic Church was often at center of mobilization against regime oppression, through its priests, nuns, lay leaders, and schools. Congolese Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo and the Congolese Conference Bishops have been at the forefront of opposing authoritarian rule in Congo for many years. The Church has conducted large-scale peace, voter, and civic education programs. In 2017 the church organized largescale demonstrations in support of free and fair elections. There were "massive crackdowns by the state security services, which fired into church grounds and killed at least eight worshipers as they knelt and sang hymns. [Elections have since been held since the book was published].There are testimonies from numerous Congolese in this book. Josephine, a Congolese woman, whose son had been killed, her home burned, and having fled to a refugee camp where her 2nd son died of malaria, stated "this war is about minerals, nothing else." (272)The first period of UN involved in Congo was 1960-1964. But after the horrible years in Congo starting in the late 1990s, the U.N. was back again, helping to keep the peace in the troubled eastern part of Congo. Its 17,000 or more (depending on the period) troops form the largest U.N. peace-keeping operation in the world now. They arrived in 2000, and have been there ever since.Prendergast and Bafilemba also give the story of the long fight to get legislation in Congress to fight conflict minerals, with activists being often led by students. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was passed in 2010. Prendergast states in 2018 that thanks to this and various other efforts, "Throughout eastern Congo, smugglers have been discouraged, mines have been demilitarized, and armed groups have been partially defanged" (260) Prendergast and George Clooney founded The Sentry, an organization to follow through on throttling illicit mineral trading via the financial world.Another witness in the book, Rebecca Kabugho of the city of Goma, was arrested, jailed, beaten and tortured for criticizing the government: "I'd ask anyone wishing to talk about Congo to talk not only about negative things but also about what's positive in Congo. And among the positive things I'm seeing are the young people, who are the hope of this country. Chaos, massacres, etc. are what people hear about most in the press. But that is not the only thing that's going on in Congo which is a big country with an informed youth population who are holding out hope for a bright future for Congo." (85)Prendergast and Bafilemba describe the strength and perseverance of civil groups like Lucha (struggle for change: lutte pour le changement—a movement of young people trying to change things. SOS Africa is another Congolese organized movement, and its co-founder concludes these international transparency initiatives are a testament that human rights advocates' voices can be heeded. Marie of Bukavu is president of her own women's organization, Mamans Organisées pour le Développement: MAODE. Denis Mukwege, the recent Nobel Prize winner, has a chapter in Congo Stories, giving a mini- autobiography.Prendergast concludes that Americans shouldn't be too condescending toward the Congolese: "The US too was built through slavery, ethnic cleansing, colonialism, and war." As to Africa, "as a result of these crises and focus on mass media on the gloom-and-doom agenda, Africa is widely perceived as hopeless, beset by wars that are only explained through "tribal' or other racist and oversimplified identifiers. This image of a hopeless continent reinforces the belief that not much can be done and the problems are insoluble" (276) And that he sets out to refute.A near final chapter is entitled: "What You Can Do", and that is exactly what the authors intend to be the purpose of this book. In doing so, they have written an excellent portrayal not only of what has gone on historically in the exploitation of Congo over the last five centuries, but a positive challenge how, working with the Congolese themselves, change may be brought to this huge and important nation.

Extraordinary reporting of what has happened and what is happening in Congo now. A must read for all responsible Americans. Our lives are intertwined with Congo in more ways than you can imagine.

Amazing perspective! Very well written, researched, and photo-documented storytelling. A must read to better understand the convergence of post-colonialism, exploitation, and corruption.

I purchased the kindle version and was so entranced, I bought the hardcover. The masterfully written work is amplified by the photographs. "Congo Stories" is illuminating and clearly composed. I've already ordered several more as gifts. I felt I was a wee bit less stupid, and a lot more inspired after reading this book.

great! lets keep building awareness for the continued travesties against the congo and it's people. here's how you can help!

John Prendergast, is an excellent author always but this book is different the "best book about Africa ever written"is a must read if one cares about world Affairs ….Good job Mr. Prendergast and your Team

#88,907 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book is terrible. Where do I start? This is basically a book of a woman complaining "woe is me", throwing herself a pity party. She blames everyone else for her problems and doesn't accept any responsibility for her terrible decisions. First of all, this book promised what it didn't deliver. From the Amazon description: "Maid explores the underbelly of upper-middle class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them." Nope. There is no glimpse at "upper-middle" class other than her judging her clients for being "sad" or "smoking cigarettes" when she smokes herself.Secondly, she doesn't provide a look into the poverty in America. She doesn't recognize herself coming from a place of privilege as a white, American woman. She was afforded opportunities that other marginalized groups may not have received. She describes some of her greatest "sacrifices" as being her daughter not being able to get "organic" milk on the WIC program and her daughter's only "organic" foods were Annie's macaroni and cheese. Really? There are many, many, many Americans that can barely afford groceries and would be thankful to have any milk or food for the week, much less being choosy about ensuring it was "organic". She seems to lament that she can't be a "stay at home mom" which the majority of Americans can't afford. The "stay at home mom" role is something that very few can afford. That isn't a mark of "poverty". Many families have both parents who work, that isn't something "special" or sympathy inducing. Then there is the accident in which she pulled off on the median of a highway and leaves her daughter in the car seat while she walks along the highway looking for a $5 doll. Then she refuses to accept any blame or her role in the accident. She complains about not getting paid to drive to the jobs she works....um....do any of us get paid for our commute? She then gets $4,000 back in a tax refund, which is annoying within itself, but then instead of saving the money and building her future, she buys herself a diamond ring? What?? Her daughter is suffering health consequences from black mold, yet she doesn't nothing about that...no, instead, she wants diamonds. She is so full of self-pity the book is hard to read. One of the most important components of a book is to have a likable main character in which the reader can sympathize with and roots for their success. I tried, but I couldn't make myself root for her. I can't believe this book made its way through an agent, editor and publishing house and became a featured book on Amazon. Did any of them read this first? Super disappointing.

Giving this any sort of bad review almost seems like it would be an act of spite, given the circumstances Stephanie Land is writing from - but still, for the first third of the book I really wasn't liking it, and I couldn't put my finger on why.But at about the halfway point, I realized I had been bait-and-switched - this is not a story of a "maid." It's the story of a working, poor, single mother, dealing with a variety of problems both self-inflicted and beyond her control who *happens* to be a maid. But that's a harder elevator pitch so I understood why "maid" became the focus. But I don't think that's really the book. When I changed my focus to the book I realized it actually was I appreciated it a lot more. At that point, I could look at this as a window to this life. Yes, Stephanie Land is often self-pitying and finds confrontation and judgement around every corner - but of course she would. Her relations with her daughter's father is not good, and she's unable to find a really solid boyfriend, because of course she can't. She wishes for a better life and probably misprioritizes things in the moment instead of thinking long-term, because of course she would. That's the hustle and grind of this life - everything is working against her. I don't believe that in every checkout line she went through she got a hard time from people standing behind her, or the checkout person - but I do believe that it felt that way to her. I don't necessarily think she was exploited by her employers quite as badly as she describes - but I'm sure she felt she was. When you're in this situation, everything is exaggerated and every bit of bad luck is magnified. That's an interesting book - harsh and hard - but interesting. Reading it in that lens made it successful in a different way then the title that had originally misdirected me.I had to go on unemployment once (well, I didn't have too - I was laid off, and it was my right), and it's like going into another mirror universe - society's respect you took for granted is suddenly upended. You're no longer seen as a responsible member of society who can be trusted to be self-reliant. You're a liar, a rube, a sap who can't write a resume. Everything becomes lowest common denominator - the assumption is you're a grifter who's trying to get one over, or an idiot who has to be talked too like a child. I could see very easily how someone in that situation long-term could quickly stop caring about honesty or integrity because the people on the other side assume the worst. I hated it, hated myself, and it was only six weeks. So *of course* Stephanie Land is defensive and self-pitying at times, because society is expecting her to be. That's the role the working poor play - we feel bad for them, toss them some baseball tickets now and then, and make sure they know we're better than they are. When I read her book THAT way, it all came into focus. This is not a book about a maid - it's the book about a life when the only job you can find is being a maid. In that way, it is valuable - because somebody needs to tell that story, and the only way to tell it is if you live it. Even Barbara Ehrenreich's famous "Nickel and Dimed" was sort of a grift - she just pretended for awhile. Great writing, but an act. Stephanie Land isn't acting, so the occasional self-pity and various poor decisions are all part of that real life. It's not that poor people have especially bad luck, it's that they can't easily recover from even sort of bad luck.So - don't look at the title and think it's a book about maids. Think of it as a look into the world of the working poor that most of us look past and hope we never encounter in our own lives. Nobody wants to hold up a line to deal with food stamps, and all the clowns who say "you're welcome" and act like food stamps are being lifted out of their own pockets, should hope and pray the situation never reverses. To digress on the subjects of maids. I was in a big hotel in Mobile, Alabama once and I was getting ice from the bucket or whatever I was doing, and I walked by the maid's station and the group was in a conference. It was probably a dozen African-American women doing their meeting before the day's shift - most of them were young in typical maid uniforms, but there were two older women in business casual leading the meeting. I realized (or at least assumed) that these two women had probably been on staff for years, working up through those ranks. This was their kingdom; I had to think, back in their neighborhoods, they controlled everything - who could get a job at this nice hotel, where it probably was a good place to work, taking calls from mothers trying to get their daughters that opportunity, no doubt laying down the false compliments amid the desperation. How would they choose? I thought of all the compromises they had to make to get to that level of responsibility - all the customers they had to put up with, the managers who probably disrespected them, the owners who looked past them, all to get to this morning meeting. I want to read that book.So I left a very good tip in the room when I left, for some woman I never saw. I think I did. I've told myself I did. I'm a nice guy so I'm sure I did. All white, middle-class Americans are very nice. We're happy to give you $10 tips and free baseball tickets. Just don't hold us up in the checkout line with your food stamps and your crying kid.

This just rubbed me the wrong way. I do think that it is of the greatest importance for people to learn more about what it is like to live in poverty and how one gets there. Happily, there are many excellent books that are relevant here: $2 a Day, Evicted, Both Hands Tied, and Ehrenreich’s book come quickly to mind. There are also a very, very good five-part podcast on poverty (co-produced by On the Media and some one else, probably in 2016), and a couple of sympathetic and illuminating books about payday lenders.I have read all of those books (and quite a few others), and would recommend any of them rather than Maid. Maid is not a terrible book. But neither is it a good one. I was often frustrated by what certainly seemed like obtuseness or lack of insight on the part of this author.

The description led me to believe that this book was going to be of the same genre of $2 a Day and other fine works. Not so. It is a story of a 29 year old woman who gets pregnant with a guy she hardly knows and then gets a job as a maid to support herself. She complains about the maid job, but chose it over working in a coffee shop. She also whines about her parents not helping her with her predicament. Well, she was brought up in privilege in the suburbs; what has she been doing since high school? No wonder her parents think it is high time she stand on her own two feet. She was not born to poverty, but blames the welfare system for keeping her poor and in her place. The book is a narrative on the author playing the victim. She also plays the domestic violence card, where the only violence that the man committed was punching out a window with anger. A bit of insurance fraud was added, too. A sham of a book. Don't waste your time or money on this.
