I became aware of this book when I was in my teens, finally read it when I was 30. My life would have been better if I had read it sooner. Buy this for your kids, make sure they read it, then make sure they learn the right things from it.As literature, this book is just OK, hence the four stars. Rand was not a native English speaker. That she managed to write this well in a second language is amazing. I would have written this book differently, but I didn't write it. Everything after The Big Long Speech is necessary, I suppose, but kind of sophomoric, definitely a B movie. As science fiction, the book is laughable, but I suggest you cut the author some slack and go with it. As an exposition of important ideas, this book has no equal. If you want to know what's wrong with the world, you can start here. It is important that you not *end* here. Think of this book as a laxative. Once you have ingested this, you can work on restocking your mental gut with better food than our culture has given you.Speaking of speeches, this book has lots of them. I have a friend who says this is her favorite book, but she also says she has never read the speeches. Here's news for you: if you haven't read the speeches, you haven't read the book. Knowing her, I suspect that if she read the speeches, it would no longer be her favorite book. Atlas Shrugged is an assault upon your morals. Some people are surprised to learn that their morals deserved to be assaulted. Some never get over the fact of the assault, assuming the problem lies with the author and her infernal book. No. The problem lies with some very old and pervasive ideas that turn out to be senseless, destructive, murderous, and just plain wrong. Some of us sort of knew that all along, but thought we were the only ones who thought so. It's a relief to see this out in the light of day.I believe the author's strategy is to make you tired. The main character tries way too hard before capitulating, allowing the author to write yet more episodes illustrating the corrupt and coercive muck we wallow in, the stuff you've encountered all your life, perhaps wondering if life really had to be this way. No, it doesn't. The aforementioned Big Long Speech is one of the greatest things ever written. But the author has to soften you up first.Some people read this and get strange. This is probably to be expected after somebody hits the reset button on their morality. It takes a while to figure out what to do next. A few people never recover, becoming something like Jesus Freaks. Most readers eventually resettle their minds, but in a different place than it would have been if they hadn't read this book.Still need a reason to read this book? It will help you say No when No needs to be said. It might even save your life. Really.

I am not against a lengthy book, but a self indulgent 1000 plus page manifesto in which characters give uninterrupted speeches that take four hours to read and serve no purpose other than to preach the author's philosophy is completely unnecessary. The book did clearly demonstrate Ayn Rand's philosophy through the characters of John Galt, Francisco D'anconia, and Ragnar D. I didn't need the sililoquies. I loved the character of Danny Taggart, who is portrayed as a woman ahead of her time considering the era in which this book was written. Can't stand Hank Reardan, who is supposed to be a hero, but is just an arrogant, if intelligent, putz.The writing style was awful...I would really love to know how many times some form of the word "astonish" is used in the book. Rand seems to need to state the most mundane points in both the positive and negative fashion. She would not say "Dagny was happy..." She would say "Dagny was, not sad, but happy. That is to say she was filled with joy, she was joyous. She was not downtrodden, but rather, pleased." This is not a quote from the book, but would have fit right in. Goodness, Ayn, leave it at happy, we all get it. Rand does write some great triumphant moments...especially when her heroes accomplish a monumental task or, pull off a dramatic act of rebellion. These are the moments that push you through the drivel. Examples: the first run of the John Galt line, or when John Galt instructs the clueless politicians in how to repair their torture machine.As for her philosophy...I am not in agreement. The world she portrays in Galt's Gulch would not be the end result of a nation which accepted her primitive , childish, self-centered, arrogant and elitist tenets. Her true society would look like a bunch of four year olds, sitting on top of their toys, crying mine, mine, mine!

"Atlas Shrugged" is a huge sprawling dystopian novel that combines economics, science fiction, philosophy, and intrique. It is the fourth and final novel of Ayn Rand. The novel is written in a modern popular style and is mostly highly readable. Probably the most difficult part of reading this book is its length.The novel seems to me to be particularly timely in regard to the current philosophical debate in American society at this time. The book revolves around the larger issues of private enterprise and entrepreneurship and socialism and government control. Within the larger theme are many subplots including some romantic intrigue.The first novel by Ayn Rand that I read was "Atlas Shrugged". Since then I have read "Anthem", "The Fountainhead", and a second reading of "Atlas Shrugged". "Anthem" and "Atlas Shrugged" are both dystopian novels. I don't wish to risk spoiling the reading experience for a perspective reader. It is clear to me that Ayn Rand conveys her personal philosophy within these works. In "The Fountainhead" she seems to extol her preferred architecture along with a very strange sexual relationship between two individuals. In "Atlas Shrugged" there is yet more unusual romantic relationships between individuals. Having also read a biography about Ayn Rand it is clear that there is a semi autobiographical aspect to those parts of these novels.In summary I am very glad that I had a chance to read and study both "Atlas Shrugged" and the life and works of Ayn Rand. Her novels provide both entertainment and fuel for thought. I doubt that this book will suit the tastes of all readers, but it is highly readable and was well worth the effort to me. Thank You...

Fantastic book set. The stories are one page and comprehensive. The paintings are fantastic. I read them to my younger son every night. Be prepared, a lot of the saints died in morbid manners! I only bring that up because I had to explain it to an eight year old.

Great books, but the St. Nicholas page might not be the best for younger children with Christmas innocence ;)

The grandkids love reading the stories about the many saints and so do some of their friends. Age ranges from 4 to 6 boys and girls. Each saint has a one page biography and a picture on the facing page. I didn't realize there were so many saints I didn't know. Great set for the price.

12 books in this set, what a deal!!!!!! Each book has several short biographies.I bought 2 sets and gave individual books to students. I have some left and am reading themmyself. Well written!

Short version: If you're a CS Harris/Sebastian St Cyr fan looking for a new series to dig into...this is probably not what you're looking for.This is more like a 2.5 star book to me, but giving it 3 stars because it's not actually a terrible or badly-written book.This book kept popping up as a recommendation while searching for books like CS Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr Regency-era mystery/thrillers series, which I love because they're vaguely hard-boiled mysteries. As I'm a sucker for mysteries set in that era, I gave this book a shot. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that Penrose's book subscribes to all the cliches of generic, Regency-set romance novels (ie those titled "The Unbridled Duke's Lover" or whatever) - where the men are always handsome, misunderstood rakes who Do the Right Thing and the women are always hiding something from the men, strong-willed and musing over the chiseled features of the guy who is inevitably not what he seems. The writing itself is consistently very soft, romance novely cliche - "he was very aware of her shoulder touching his," "what right did he have to tell her to do blah blah" etc - which is not at all what I was expecting in a mystery that is being pitched to CS Harris fans (the book even has a blurb spelling that out!). Basically, it's like the author wrote a mass market paperback Avon historical romance with a mystery plot, then left out the parts where the characters fall in love and get it on because she wanted to reach a wider audience than traditional romance novel readers.

This mystery, set during the Regency era, is the first in a new series featuring the delightfully dynamic duo of Wrexford and Sloane.When the charismatic Reverend Josiah Holworthy is found murdered in a church, it is a shocking crime. Suspicion falls on The Earl of Wrexford, who has been known to be one of the targets of Holworthy’s sermons against debauchery. Wrexford didn’t do it, of course, but can he convince Bow Street of his innocence?Meanwhile, Mrs. Charlotte Sloane has a secret- she is A.J. Quill, the satirical cartoonist whose prints have targeted Wrexford in the past. She is not convinced of Wrexford’s guilt, but prints that showcase him with demonic features prove to be lucrative.Eventually, Wrexford locates Quill’s house and his surprised to discover that his quarry is a woman. They enter into an unlikely partnership in order to discover the truth about what happened to Holworthy. Charlotte has good reason not to trust aristocratic gentleman based on events in her past, but her keen eye for details might be the only thing that can save Wrexford.Penrose has created an immersive Regency world filled with period details. It was very satisfying to watch Wrexford and Charlotte uncover the clues that eventually lead them to the identity of the perpetrator. I would also like to point out that I loved almost all of the secondary characters just as much (villains excluded), and although it is hard to pick a favorite, I hope that we get to see more of Sheffield in future mysteries.I would absolutely recommend Murder on Black Swan Lane to fans of historical mysteries. Wrexford and Charlotte have some great chemistry together, and it’s rather pleasant that their rapport is built on mutual respect and admiration rather than attraction. That said, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for those two. I am already eagerly waiting to see which mystery Wrexford and Sloane tackle next!I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I purchased my own copy because I enjoyed this book so much.

There’s so much here to love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. From the get go, I was pulled in by the mystery, the fabulous characters, Charlotte’s secret role as AJ Quill, her willingness to push boundaries and convention, the highly effective way she would gather research for her drawings, the way the characters from different classes came together, the two boys Raven and Hawk, and the sarcastic and entertaining interaction between the Earl and Charlotte (and really, the Earl and his butler and friend, Sheffield). Forgive the run-on sentence. There are just a remarkable number of fabulous things happening in this book. I can’t wait for the next one!

It's always good to see a new entry in the crowded Regency historical mystery field, especially if it's reasonably well done. Penrose's new series features the Earl of Wrexford, a wealthy nobleman who is also an amateur chemist and too hot tempered for his own good. A suspect in the murder of a fanatical clergyman with whom he had been feuding, he ends up seeking help from an unlikely source: A.J. Quill, a popular political cartoonist who is actually an impoverished widow trying to make ends meet. The book seems a little too underdeveloped and the reader wants to know far more about these intriguing characters with their unusual interests. Presumably the start of a developing partnership/romance, hopefully future books will expand on them. The material on the many scientific discoveries being made at the time and the popularity of the daring cartoonists always lampooning the unpopular Prince of Wales and his family is especially welcome--a fascinating period in history.

This is a good book. It keeps the reader interested throughput. As another reviewer mentioned, however, Penrose does use some worn and sometimes trite phrases, and once in awhile, she drops some 21st century verbiage into the mix. That didn't bother me as much as it might have, but it was enough to take a star.The editing is fairly good, with a few extra or missing words here and there, but nothing as egregious as some self-published writers.No rel blood--a good thing in my book--and the characters are likable, generally. I don't like to give away plots, but I will say that the "bad guy" gets what he deserves.

I've read a ton of preaching books, and most of them leave me just as confused as before. The genius of this short, easy to read, wonderfully written little book is in the process it shares. It's transferable to many (if not all) teaching styles. Ryan comes back to the centrality of scripture and the holiness of the preaching vocation early and often. This is definitely not a "motivational speakers toolkit". This book is an invaluable resource that I will come back to over and over again, and I will keep several copies on my bookshelf to give away to any aspiring preacher of the word. This is simply a must have!

This may be the most practical and helpful book on preaching I've ever read. Don't let the idea of 8 hours put you off. The process Ryan describes is excellent, regardless of the time limits you choose to adopt. I wish I had these insights years ago.

The title says it all. As a preacher in college I am glad I got my hands on this early because it has now paved a way for me for guidance in sermon preparation. Ryan was raw and gave just enough information and application while engaging the reader!

I could not put this book down! It is full of sound theology and practical wisdom on how to use your time preparing sermons to the glory of God. I highly recommend it for any and all preachers.

This book wastes no words. It is to the point and written to to be a practical, step-by-step guide. And yet, it is very firmly and explicitly grounded in a clear theological understanding of faithful preaching. The biggest takeaway for me is imposing time-bound deadlines on each part of the prep process.

Ryan does a great job of outlining an efficient and practical way to approach writing faithful sermons. I've already been implementing a number of his suggestions and have found it a lot easier to create sermons more quickly. Thanks for such a great tool!

John Rasmussen's translation of this brilliant book by Leif Grane has been part of my library for twenty years. I was happy to see it available in Kindle because so many people today rely on electronic devices. As the Gutenberg press helped spread Luther's writings, perhaps Kindle can help people understanding the 16th c. ecumenical confession of faith through Luther's theology. Rasmussen's inclusion of references to the American edition of Luther's works is very helpful since most Americans don't have access to the German Weimar Edition. This excellent translation reads smoothly and I am very happy to have it available to students, members and others pastors.

Whether you are a Scandinavian Lutheran who relies solely on the Augsburg Confession or a confessional Lutheran who upholds the entire Book of Concord you will find this to be an extremely helpful introduction to the AC. Grane explains the theology and background behind the terse statements of each article of the AC. Grane was a top notch Luther scholar who has written a work here useful both to entry level seminarians and laity alike. I used this book to teach the theology of the AC in light of Scripture to a group of Lutherans every week for several months.Excellent Resource.

If you want the book, DON'T buy the Large Print edition. Although it's cheaper, the print is unclear.If you want to know what Lutherans teach, then this is a book for you.I found it useful in my theology studies.

The Augsburg Confessions lays down the basic beliefs of the early Lutherans with commentary. The actual confession is very simple and to the point. The commentary elaborates and goes into detail, context, etc. I was amazed at the simplicity and conciseness.

This was a really interesting and exciting book. The hunt for Eichmann had so many dedicated and talented people involved, and so many twists and turns, it's better than any fiction story. You can't make this stuff up. The book covers Eichmann's life and evil deeds plus the amazing story of how he escaped the clutches of people searching for him for 15 years after the war -- finally tracking him to a remote town in Argentina. THEN, there's the exciting problem of abducting him and getting him to Israel to stand trial -- bravery and dedication from all involved. In the end, his capture and trial did much to publicize and elucidate the true dimensions of the Holocaust to the world, so 6 million souls were not written off and forgotten.I found this book to be a page turner. I had to keep re-charging my Kindle because I had to know how it all turned out.Good job, thoroughly researched and very well written.

I had read a very brief story on the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Reader's Digest years ago which, after reading this masterful narrative, fell far short of giving a full and well-deserved rich portrait of the many years long effort to discover whether Eichmann was alive or dead, and if alive, where in the world he might be. The work of the Israeli intelligence agency in doggedly pursuing Eichmann, planning his capture, and ultimately putting him on trial (and consummating his punishment) is amazing. I've read many books on WWII and Nazi Germany's genocide of the Jews, and was very aware of Eichmann's role, but this page turning narrative never misses a beat in taking us from the war years through the post-war trauma and search for Nazi war criminals, and the dogged efforts of the Mossad and others in doing so. Even after reading so many books on the subject, it is still incomprehensible how the German army could have become so cruelly intent on treating the Jews as nothing more than animals to be slaughtered - yet it happened. "I was only following orders" is the most oft-cited response of those captured and held accountable for their crimes. You will find edge of your seat suspense as the Israeli team closes in on Eichmann in Argentina and learn every detail of their extensive planning to not only capture him, but get him safely out of the country to return to Israel for trial. A brilliant non-stop book.

I watched the recent movie Operation Finale, and decide to read this book to get more information about the capture of Eichmann. The book exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it. The focus of this book is obviously the mission to capture Eichmann, but the author gives the reader much more: a concise background about Eichmann's important role in implementing the Holocaust as an enthusiastic Nazi SS Officer, a fascinating summary of his capture by and escape from Allied forces, his travel to and life in Argentina, and also an insightful description of Eichmann's trial, an important event in the history of Israel. The actual capture mission is the core of the book, and is very detailed and well-written. There are quite a few differences from the movie, and we learn how professional and dedicated the Mossad operatives were in real life. This was a daring and high risk operation in a hostile country. The author lets the reader draw his/her own conclusions about Eichmann's motives as a key cog in the Nazi's attempt to murder all of the Jews in Europe. It is important to remember that such evil exists, and learn how to prevent it from happening again.

Wow! I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I appreciate how Bascomb went to so many different sources to cull his information and put it together into one captivating tome.I read almost everything I can find on WWII, especially relating to the Holocaust as the topic fascinates me. I feel like it somehow honors those who perished in a very small way to learn what I can about their lives and their experiences. In spite of all of the reading I have already done on the subject, this book added plenty of new dimension and understanding.In particular, I appreciate Bascomb's description of Germany, the Catholic Church, the United States, Great Britain, Argentina, etc, and the roles they took on with regard to finding Nazis after the war, and how the Eichmann trial impacted those approaches. I also gained a new appreciation for the formation of the nation of Israel, and how it came to be.In addition to appealing to history buffs, this is an excellent book for those who like spy thrillers. It was a page turner and many nights I could not put it down! Well worth the read.
