These cute, little books use manga-style graphics to help English speakers learn the Japanese writing systems. Kana de Manga: A Fun, Easy Way To Learn the ABCs of Japanese! teaches the hiragana and katakana syllabaries, the closest that Japanese has to an alphabet. For each kana are provided the sound, a word using the sound with accompanying illustration and cultural note, the stroke order for drawing the kana, and empty grids for practice. Front and back matter provide kana contractions plus more information about the kana systems. Almost 40 pages are devoted to practice grids, unnecessary for library readers. The volume is inexpensive, cute, and useful, although other kana tutorials that use mnemonics that is, likening the kana to an image can be effective, too. The four Kanji de Manga volumes teach 320 of the more complex Chinese-based kanji characters, of which some 2100 are used in standard Japanese. These books teach kanji only through the kana. This may be a good discipline, but most English-speaking readers would have greatly appreciated Romanizations, too, even if relegated to a back section in place of practice pages. There's no Romanized index or glossary, either. Not a priority purchase. Japanese Sound FX! is likely to be the most useful of these books, with Romanizations, cultural explanations, and illustrations for many of those untranslated sound effects sprinkled tantalizingly throughout manga. GLENN KARDY is founder of Japanime, an award-winning creative agency and publisher of Manga University's acclaimed lineup of educational materials. He lives in the Tokyo suburb of Kawaguchi City with his wife, their daughter and a collection of Oakland A's bobblehead dolls. CHIHIRO HATTORI has been the featured artist in all nine volumes of the Kana de Manga/Kanji de Manga series, and she also illustrated Manga University's Manga Cookbook. This book has a good amount of useful selections of Japanese sound effect written in both hiragana and katakana and brief description on how they are used. If you're looking into making mangas, this booklet is pretty handy to have on your drawing desk and small enough to carry around in your pack.The only flaw I would give this book is its lack of alternative selections for the one's they already have. Yet it's still good enough as a starter kit.

I was looking for the Japanese translations for sound FX so I could use them in my manga. This book definitely was what I was looking for, but I wish it had more....didn't seem like quite enough :)

I've looked everywhere for this book. It's the kanji, japanese definition and wording for every kind of everyday sound effect your could think of.

I love that it includes the Hiragana and Katakana. Gives you example words with the letter, sample sounds and instructions on writing. I love the little facts and interesting snippets they give you with every one. Fun.

*This review is on the kindle version*I should have heeded the warnings, but the sample worked great so I bought it anyway. The book displayed nothing but broken image icons for EVERY PAGE. (See attached example taken on my phone in the kindle app.)The only place I could get the book to display was (as others had said) on the PC cloudreader.The content is good enough I will probably buy it in print, but I can’t say I’m not disappointed I had to request a refund. I hope they fix this but I’m not holding my breath seeing as the problem has been around for more than a year.

Really helpful for anyone learning Japanese who wants to read Manga at some point or for someone who wants to better understand any kind of Japanese media. When you think of english sound effects you might think of "ruff" for a dog barking or "meow" for a cat or "bang" for a gun shot. This book gives you the Japanese versions of all kinds of sound effects with examples of how they might appear in Manga form. This was extremely helpful for trying to read actual Manga because the Japanese version of sound effects are quite different than their english counterparts. I'd highly recommend this book.

I saw the movie while going through a pretty serious break up and quite enjoyed it so I bought the book. It was a good entertaining read.

Funny (there is a great scene with a birthday cake) and a true bawdy romp, but so misogynistic that I can't really recommend it to anyone who despises a heavy-handed male perspective (what we call dicklit). Everyone's appearance is fair game (male and female), but guys get away with being attractive as slobs, while the women have to be skinny and gorgeous to merit attention - the term "creamy thighs" was shamelessly overused. Great for an entertaining read, but if you find self-pitying, sex-obsessed dudes annoying (like ones who complain: I haven't been with a woman in 2 whole months, I'm such a victim!!!), perhaps this isn't the book for you. Most of the women in my book club loved it (as did my mom and some pretty famous film producers) so mine is a minority perspective perhaps.

This started out so clever and insightful regarding family dynamics. Then it fell apart and left me feeling vaguely depressed. If this is insight into the male mind, we are doomed as a planet. Never mind it lost touch with reality around the second time this supposed slovenly loser got laid. Never mind the whole male-rape scene was smarmy and sad. It just didn't deliver as far as exposing the complicated emotions that exist in every family. the potential was there, but it went from clever to ridiculous. There aren't many families where grown men get together and end up beating up each other, and various other characters. It felt like reality TV. And the women . . . there wasn't one missed stereotype, I have to give Tropper credit. You have the bitch, the whore, the crazy hormonal housewife, even the lesbians. Oh, and the sad, lonely single woman. There wasn't one woman character that you could stand. This was a misogynistic mess. I struggled to finish it. The only positive thing I can say is that it didn't wrap things up neatly with a bow. Thanks, Tropper.

I bought the book because it was said to be funny and it did deliver on that. The family zings each other constantly and hilariously. The professional reviews that compare the author to Nick Hornby are tripping. Tropper writes well crafted entertainment, Hornby serious books, despite the often lighthearted tone.But the author wants to mock pop psychology and still invokes bromides like letting go of your grief and moving past your anger. Worse, he seems to not realize that some things really are unforgivable, no matter how besotted you are.

"This Is Where I Leave You" by Jonathan Tropper is a melancholy, sometimes humorous look at family angst and dysfunction. Judd Foxmann's father has died after a lengthy illness and his mother has gathered the family together to sit Shiva. The siblings are all equally bewildered by this last request from their non-religious father. The Foxmann's have not been together as a family for quite some time and now they will be forced to sit together in the same room for seven straight days.Judd, the narrator, has recently caught his wife in bed with his boss and is in the midst of divorce. He's been living a lonely existence in the basement of an elderly Asian couple's home. Wendy, his sister, has three young children and a husband more concerned with making money than family time. Paul, the older brother, whose one time shot at the big leagues was shot down in tragedy, is still angry with Judd for the incident. His wife, meanwhile, is desperately trying to conceive. The youngest brother, Phillip, the somewhat loveable black sheep of the family is trying to have an adult relationship with an older woman.The story follows the family interactions over the course of the seven days. The various dynamics between the family members, their significant others and the guests that pay their respects leads to often hilarious scenarios and occasionally enlightenment. Judd's search for a way to live in this new world he's found himself in and to create a tenable future makes for a somewhat sad, yet amusing journey.Tropper has given Judd a very unique narrative style which really works with the flow of the story. I quite liked the novel, although I will say I was expecting it to be funnier. There were moments of hilarity but it was overall sadder than anticipated.

"The Christmas Story for Children" by Max Lucado, Randy Frazee, and Karen Davis Hill is a nice version of the Christmas story. I like how it starts out telling about the promised Messiah that the Jews were waiting for and how when the time was right, God provided special people to welcome His Son. The subject of the virgin birth is covered in a way that young children will understand ("How can this be, I'm not married yet.") This story covers how an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to tell him that the Holy Spirit caused Mary to be pregnant. There was the usual trip to Bethlehem on a donkey and the inn keepers telling them there is no room in the inn. As is also usual, Mary gave birth the night they arrived in Bethlehem (see my pet peeves about Nativity stories here) I liked the angels that appeared to the shepherds and how their wings were almost invisible (and were clearly male). This book doesn't cover the wise men coming at all. One thing I really liked about "The Christmas Story for Children" was that it covered Jesus' baptism and the beginning of his earthly ministry. The artwork in the book is very colorful and clear. They look like watercolor paintings. ;One picture that I did not like was when Jesus was being baptized, it has him only mostly submerged with John pouring water on His face. There is also a LOT of curlicues. It made the sheep look more like goats with the long curly fur.I received a free paperback copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own..

I love this book. It's starts with a Bible quote and then the quote is rewritten in a way that's so easy to understand as if we are talking directly to God in our own words. There is a sense of peace because the prayers speak what I feel but don't know how to express. I'm happy those that have that gift are willing to share it with those that don't.

Max Lucado's Pocket Prayers is a book which shows the simplicity of prayer. I love that he first gives scripture then a written prayer which teaches that your prayers do not have to be long or wordy. It is a great book to carry with you anytime especially when comfort or direction or source of strength is needed.

I like that each prayer is proceeded by scripture. I'm typically not much for reading prayers, but the prayers in this book prompt me to pray, expanding on the written prayers. This book has been a source of encouragement.

A wonderful way to start the day by reading this series of scriptures and the stories written to accompany each one. A way to start your own daily walk with God through prayer and meditation. These 40 simple steps to getting ready for a relationship with the Lord through prayer is Amazing. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to anyone who wants to expedience that beautiful relationship with the Lord.

I take this everywhere I go. It is small and slim and can fit in a back pocket, a purse, a desk drawer, a glove box, and mine has been all of those places and more. When I'm stressed or worried or frustrated or tired or just want to connect with God, I pick one and pray it. These are simple, beautiful, and are exactly what I needed. Mine is already getting pretty dog-eared and no doubt will only become more so! Love this and have purchased for a few other people that I knew would love it also.

And am not sure how to begin because my mind is racing with life issues or feelings of unworthiness, these simple steps bring me to a place where my focus shifts in the right direction and it begins with God You are great ... I need you ... From there it just flows.

I ordered this little book of prayers to accompany Max Lucado's book Before Amen. I struggle with impromptu prayers, so I thought this book might offer some thoughtful prayers for everyday use. It's just excellent! The prayers have been written to follow Lucado's "pocket prayer" plan: easy to say, heartfelt, and customizable.
