This is a great introduction to robotics and science for budding scientists. There's not really enough books on robots for students. I wish this were a little longer, but it is a fun and interesting read -- especially for young scientists (who express an interest in robots). Many of the other books on robotics are very technical and too long for young readers.This, on the other hand, is a short introduction that will excite young minds. Reading this excellent book has resulted in a demonstration of the Law of Unintended Consequences. Like many people I have read Dostoevsky over the years, but very rarely return to the novels in their entirely, largely because they require extraordinary time and concentration for a general reader (such as myself). So when this book came to my attention it seemed like an effective and efficient way to revisit Dostoevsky. That was a mistake (more about that later).Cicovacki focuses upon five major works (Notes From the Underground, Crime and Punishment, The Possessed, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov) to reveal insight for Dostoevsky's philosophy of life and his spirituality, which features a clear-eyed realism regarding the sorrows of life and yet optimism for redemption by sustaining one's humanity throughout the inevitable trials. Dostoevsky's Christianity draws upon the God of the Book of Job and the Christ of the Gospels, sacrificed for mankind and a model of sacrifice for mankind. Good and evil co-exist in Dostoevsky's world, and Cicovacki vividly demonstrates how that tension is portrayed in the novels and why there is good reason to consider Dostoevsky an optimist (on balance).For some, this book will be of little value but for others you will find great insight and comfort. The difference may be decided by what one considers the "affirmation of life." If materialism and "progress" is your sole metric, maybe take a pass. If, however, our humanity (how we interact with others, how we empathize, and how we retain an appreciation for certain mysteries in life) is your primary denominator, then dive in.Here are some brief excerpts that will give you a flavor of what to expect (chosen by flipping though the book): "It is the very nature of human language (and thought) that, although being a way toward revealing the truth, it is at the same time inadequate to it. As Yuri Lotman puts it, "The truth glimmers dimly" through our words, but are incapable of naming the truth precisely." (p. 115) "Humanism and secularism, by contrast, appear to [Dostoevsky] as practically opportune but spiritually dishonest: They offer a compromise that makes life more convenient but which leads away from search for the highest values." (p. 145) "While modernity attempts to demystify the world, so that we can control it and mold it to satisfy our needs, Dostoevsky believes that we have dangerously impoverished the world in our effort to master it." (p. 152)Beautifully written, 'Dostoevsky and the Affirmation of Life' is filled with intelligent commentary on the novels, their characters, and appreciation for Dostoevsky's genius. Even if your exposure to Dostoevsky is limited, if you are sympathetic with his message you will find this book a treasure.And the mistake? Obviously, this book has rekindled a desire to re-read the original texts and all intentions of being "effective and efficient" have come to naught. This summer's beach-read will likely be Notes From the Underground. Oh, woe is me!

Worth buying for the artistic and cultural diversity.Pity the publisher doesn't activate the 'Look Inside' feature. A reading of the book's introduction would give sufficient tattle, a few pages would entice:-Sixty plates: 2-9 designs per plate, more than 250 designs.-Motifs: plant, animal, Christmas, holiday, geometric. religious figures, abstracts...-Range: whimsical to stylized.-Applications: needlework, textile design, leather work, pottery, wood burning, carving, drawing, Wycinanki...Art from 24 countries alphabetically arranged: including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Yugoslavia. One to five pages for each country. Ex: Albania shows 3 designs on 1 page. Czechoslovakia boasts 20 designs 5 pages.A key on each page explains the media source, most with time periods.Ex: Sampler embroidery, west Hungary, Slovak influence (early 19th century).This allows the curious to gleefully chase more information elsewhere.Most art from 17th - 19th centuries.On the 10 vertically-laid pages, text on the left page is along the spine, text on the right page along the edge. This collection of designs is very diverse, some being intricately detailed while others are simple. The animals, people, plants, and other designs are beautifully printed in black and white with helpful descriptions of time, place and uses included. If the pages printed sideways had been printed back to back, with the footnotes on the outer edges of the left hand side as well as the right, it would be easier to use in terms of copying or sketching. I like books that show folk art from around the world. It has motifs from countries as Germany, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Poland, and Portugal. There are many bird and floral designs and those that could be put on mediums as pottery. This book is a generous representation of international folk art.

Drawings are almost childlike. Poor images.

Great over all view on early folk art designs of Europe....some of the designs are very simple and some are very complex....not a comprehensive book on European design but it is enough to wet your appetite for this kind of art work.

Steven Travers is a USC graduate and ex-professional baseball player. He is the author of the best-selling Barry Bonds: Baseball's Superman, nominated for a Casey Award (Best Baseball Book of 2002). He is also the author of The USC Trojans: College Football's All-Time Greatest Dynasty and One Night, Two Teams: Alabama vs. USC and the Game that Changed the Nation. The title and the subject have such great promise and this book does an OK job covering the man who more than any other defined NY baseball in the late 60s and early 70s. Maybe it's unfair, but I expected better; something more akin to a Kahn's Boys of Summer or Charles Einstein's Willie's Time. Travers is maybe a little too excited or swept up in his iconography of Seaver and got lost in his own fascination of the man. On the one hand there are great details about the highlights of Seaver's career - coming to the Mets, the almost no-hitter against the Cubs, and of course the 69 and 73 pennant races and World Series games. The book also does a good job describing, from the pitcher's perspective, the events leading up to the Cincinnati trade. In between though are somewhat incomplete observations about who he did and didn't get along with, Seaver's ease in crossing racial lines, and his commitment to his family and maintaining his own set of values. None of this is bad or inaccurate (as far as I might know) but much of it is oddly placed, not always in context or rehashed in other chapters.What I truly enjoyed about this work was the devotion to detail of the 69 and 73 seasons, as well as other highlight periods in Seaver's career. Travers is good about taking you back to games that I distinctly remember watching on WOR, listening to on the radio or actually seeing at Shea. Those memories alone make the book worthwhile.

Overall a decent book. Would rate it a 2 for those who saw Seaver's career unfold and a 4 for those who never had the opportunity to see him pitch.Unfortunately, the author is an over the top Seaver fan and seems to think it necessary to emphasize that Seaver's record would have been better had he had more run support.When he won 20 the author says he should have won 30! When he won 15, the author says he should have won 20!! he won 3 Cy Youngs-the author argues he should have had twice as many!!!Long story short(and i am a Yankee fan and not a great fan of Seaver) Tom Seaver is a 300 game winner,3 time Cy Young award winner, a near unanimous first ballot Hall of Famer and in the discussion to be one of the greatest pitchers of all time. It is unnecessary to cheapen his legacy by making silly excuses for why he should have been even more successful than he was.

I've loved the Mets since 1977 and this is one of the worst Mets or sports books I've read due to the author's slavish devotion to Tom Terrific. i did not feel I got a balanced story from the author who was clearly a Seaver fan. Only the positive attributes of the subject were stressed and you are force fed that Seaver could do no wrong (almost) and he was always three steps above everyone else.If you are a Mets fan you will not learn one new fact or insight about Tom Seaver. Avoid this book.

This is a poorly written, poorly researched, bit of fluff.If you want to learn more about Tom Seaver, professionally and/or personally, don't expect to learn it here. Not sure how or why this was even published.

Without this masterpiece of baseball writing, I wouldn't have known Shea Stadium was in Manhattan and Joe DiMaggio was amoral. And this is within the first 60 pages, with more nonsense to come. This book is worthless crap, stay away.

I've long admired pitching star Tom Seaver, both for his ability to play baseball and for his intelligence. Thus, I was eager to read this biography of Seaver. To say I was tremendously disappointed would be an understatement.This was probably the worst book I've read this year. If you like your biographies to be objective and/or balanced, this is not the book for you. However, if you like fawning, gushing hero worship, essentially a hagiography, you might enjoy this one.The writing was so flowery and, at times over the top, that it was tough to read this book, except with a horrified fascination.Also, the author was just plain mean, in a weird, almost childish, way, towards many of Seaver's competitors and/or opponents. For example, of San Diego Padre pitcher Randy Jones, the author calls him a "figure barely recalled by history who also could not carry Seaver's dirty jockstrap." Others were said to not hold a candle to the great Seaver. You get the idea. Lots of opinions without facts to back them up.When Seaver's record was substandard or he did not win an award that the author believes Seaver should've won, the author piles on excuses. Seaver's team never scored any runs for him, unlike pitchers on other teams, apparently. Others were just jealous of him and his greatness, or so it was claimed, again and again and again.The personal information provided about Seaver was interesting, at times, but the author included far too many generalizations. How can we really know that he was the last of the nonadulterous baseball player in the majors? How can we know that some of his teammates followed his lead in this regard? Was there a survey taken?The author adds: "Curiously, the 'quintessential Seaver book' was never written ... until, finally, this one!" Somehow, I don't think so.Maybe someday, the quintessential Seaver bio will be written. I look forward to reading that book. Unfortunately, this is not the quintessential Seaver bio.
