This collection of utterly horrendous postcards is a delightful window into our past and what people valued in days gone by. Certainly in retrospect it is hard to grasp what on earth the people who made these postcards, and more importantly the people who bought and sent them were thinking, but at the time they all made sense to somebody. Most of these cards are from 1960's and 1970's Britain; I recommend the companion volume "Boring Postcards USA" for a similar look at US postal proclivities in the same eras. Some of the themes of the book are over-represented (highway interchanges chief among them), but I found the postcards of motels, campgrounds, and public areas to be charming though horrifying.Among my favorite cards in this volume are such greats as "NUL. 30F. M.6. Motorway. Newcastle-under-Lyme.", "Interior of the Mersey Tunnel, Liverpool", "The Drive In Bottle Shop, Northampton", "The Butts Shopping Center, Reading", "Farnham Post Office", "Canteen, Stoke Mandeville Hospital" (a truly ghastly realm of colors), "National Giro Centre, Bootle" (an amazingly postcard that has actually been postmarked!), "A corner of the Moota Motel, Cockermouth", "The Garreg Goch Caravan Park, Morfa Bychan" (the saddest trailer court I have ever seen), and perhaps my favorite of all, "Rain Clouds, from Southend Pier", a bad photo of some clouds in beautiful black and white.Truly, this is a great collection that simultaneously made me amused and sentimental. I only wish that I could detach and send these postcards, as I know several people who would be delighted to get a card of "Turbine Hall, CEGB Wylfa Nuclear Power Station, Anglesey."

I just love this collection of postcards - they are truly mind-numbing, and as I was leafing through the book, my over-riding thought was WHY??? Why on earth would anyone take a picture of the National Giro Centre, Bootle, Preston Bus Station, numerous Forte motorway restaurants and the Bull Ring centre? Perhaps these buildings and roads were something to be proud of when they were built - a brave new post-war Britain. I can see the point of a few of them, but some are just mind-numbingly boring and just plain odd. The oddest, in fact, is Basingstoke. Three pictures in one postcard, all showing the same view of construction work on a pedestrian precinct.Ahhh - the pedestrian precinct!! How 60's is THAT!!!!!A great book to have around and a great conversation starter.

Very boring.

Great pictures through all the book. It really take you back in time. Thanks to Stuart Murdoch's 'The Celestial Café' that I found this book and many others.

great shipping and product!

I do not understand why anyone would make a book of pictures of stupid post cards when they could have made a book full of real post cards that someone could actually send to other people. I was so excited yo have this coming so I could send out some strange cards to people, but it is just shrunken pictures of post cards with another stupid picture on the back so they are 100% usless to me. I will be throwing this into the trash. The author and publisher are idiots.

Anyone interested in bad, sterile, depressing and bland architecture need look no further. This book provides perfect examples in how NOT to design living spaces and aestetically pleasing public landscapes and public buildings. The book easily could have been titled "How not to Feng Shui".What really strikes you as you glance over the whole of the motel, trailerpark and assorted public buildings is an overwhelming blandness, mismatching and tacky colors, stark, bleak and monotonous nothingness that envelops these cheap and thoughtless artifacts of a thankfully bygone era.A great sociological book could be written on why the general whole of the western world lost so much of its sense of aesthetic beauty in the 20th century and made books like this possible. Is it that 20th century man lost all higher hopes and feeling for beauty and that the horrors of the century can be reflected in the strictly utilitarian architecture that dominated the century?Or is it that the almost exclusively materialistic mindset of 20th century dictated that his environments reflect his inner state?Pore over this book and draw your own conclusions.

#3,556 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The story is great, very suspenseful and intriguing. I started this series because I had seen the TV show based on it and I had heard that there are some major differences between the two. The only reason I gave it four stars is because the books are written for a much younger age group. I started watching the show, which is meant for older audiences (older teens and up), when I was in my mid to late twenties, but the books feel like they are written for younger teens so I had a hard time fully enjoying it. I actually gave up on reading it eventually. It's great for younger pre-teens and tweens, but if you're older and want to read it because of the TV show, just be aware that the writing style is not as adult-like as the show.

Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard is one of the best YA stories that I have read so far in this new year. I admit I binge watched the TV show first before reading the books. Neither one was a disappointment. What I am almost ashamed to admit is that I finished this book in one day. Each of the main characters got equal time in the story. The dialogue was believable. The only thing I had an issue with that almost took me out of the story was all the high end fashion labels that was name dropped throughout the whole book. Yes, we get it the Liars love their high end stuff. If you like YA stories packed with mystery, action, and drama then this is the book for you. I would recommend it to those who like this genre. I give it 4.5 Platypires.

I bought a book expecting the basic literary elements of character, plot, conflict, resolution...but all I got were the characters! This novel does not stand alone...it is basically a complete introduction to the next novel. Basically a marketing ploy to make readers buy more books than they have to. Waste of money!!!!

This is one of those series that I really wish that I had read before I watched the television show. The reason I say this is because the show and the actresses have spoiled me. I envision the actresses from the show when I read the book and find myself slightly disappointed when they act differently.I still really enjoy the book and the in-depth story. We get to learn a little more about Alison, I think, and I've heard that the television series goes really differently compared to the books. Based on that, I'm very curious about what happens in the future books. I can't wait to read further into the series and see where they lead. Also, am I the only one that's crazy over the covers?Rating: 3 StarsCharacters: Aria and Hannah.

It’s been three years since the night Alison went missing leaving Aria, Spencer, Emily and Hannah on their own. Alison was the glue that held them together and without her the girls drifted apart moving off on their own paths. Each girl has spent the last three years changing while Aria really had the chance to find herself in Finland, and Hannah lost all the weight to be the hottest girl in school. While Emily has worked hard at swimming and is already being watched by scouts and Spencer is focused on academics being better than her older sister.Alison was known for knowing a lot more than most about the girls and when start showing up only things that Alison knew the girls start to question what happened to her. Someone knows more about their lives and is threating to reveal all their secrets. The girls are wondering if Alison has returned after all this time gone. The case has long been cold but a new lead may just change everything. We have four points of view a little insight from each girl who happens to each being dealing with her own share of problems. I didn’t have a favorite girl who I was able to connect with like I did on the show but that could be because it’s only been a week in the book.I’ve been on the fence since I watched the first season of the TV show on ABC family. I recently got into a little chat about who could possibly be A on the TV show and decided to give it a shot. First off the girls don’t look like they do on the show and it kind of irked me a bit. It was interesting to see how it played out in the book and I honestly think it works better. I like that we get to see an insight into each of the girls lives and found it interesting that while it’s different from the show some things still are the same. Pretty little Liars is a YA mystery that mixes a coming of age story entwined with romance and tragedy. The author had done a great job of weaving a captivating story. I’m curious to see how the series plays out and I very well may read the rest of the books they are quick and fast paced reads.

A quick bit of background...I am a long time space exploration aficionado, have many books mostly to do with manned spaceflight in the 1960's. I have several other recent comparable large hard cover books featuring the manned space program including Moonshots, Moonfire, Full Moon and Apollo VII-XVII.The book....Starting with how this book is packaged - it literally comes (from Amazon anyway) triple boxed. You open the Amazon book, there's a slightly smaller book that is the shipping box for the book. You open that box, the book is inside a shrink-wrapped illustrated carrying case style box complete with handle typical for the largest, most lavish Taschen books. Carefully open the carrying case and this huge 15lb book inside is also shrink-wrapped. Everything graphically about this book is over-the-top. The dust cover and paper stock is thick semi-gloss paper, almost card stock. The dust cover and the chapter break photos have silver ink printing to accentuate the 4 color images. The actual book cover is an embossed photo of Buzz Aldrin's boot print on the lunar surface. The text is fairly large and easy to read. Binding, printing and overall quality of the photos and other images included is outstanding. Perhaps fortunately due to practicality issues, there's no fold-out spreads. This is *not* a book you can cradle in your lap and read, it's just too big and heavy. From a content standpoint, this book gives a very broad overview of American space program in a mostly chronological way. Informatively, this is the kind of book tailored more towards the casual space exploration fan. For the die-hard space enthusiast, almost all the photographs are fairly common, including iconic photos such as Ed White's spacewalk to the Apollo 11 moonwalk images to classic shuttle/spacewalk, ISS and of course, beautiful Hubble deep space photographs. There's also a few illustrations of hardware, missions, etc. The big draw here is the sheer size (most are full page images) and quality of the images included. IMO, I think content-wise, for so-called coffee table sized photo books, Moonshots and (the original full size HC) Full Moon books are a bit better and go a little more in depth but that is in large part because those book focus on the Apollo program itself. But big as those books are, they are physically dwarfed by "The NASA Archives."One thing I would caution potential buyers - be very careful when putting the book back in it's case and closing the top. It's very easy to catch the edge of and accidentally damaging the top of the dust cover.

Was really thrilled to find this book was double boxed and came in a protective sleeve, arrived in perfect condition. The book itself is massive and is of quality construction. All the photographs are incredible. Can’t wait to sit down and read every page.

I have looked at many books of photographs from Apollo. The pictures in this book are spectacular.

This is a beautiful (though quite heavy) book. It was worth the wait to have it in my book collection.

“The NASA Archive” is an extraordinary object---I almost hesitate saying “book.” A monument to NASA (literally and figuratively: it weighs nearly 15 pounds; fortunately, it comes in a carrying case equipped with a handle) celebrating the agency’s sixtieth year of existence and the fiftieth anniversary of its greatest achievement---the landing of human on the moon---”The NASA Archive” is eminently worthy of its subject. In spite of what its title implies, the book goes beyond NASA in telling its story in words and pictures. It gets a running start by backing up decades before the agency’s existence and begins with a tip of the hat to Jules Verne and the text of an article from a 1929 issue of the science fiction magazine, “Science Wonder Stories.” There are five spectacular pages of artwork by Chesley Bonestell and Rolf Klep from the seminal “Collier’s” magazine spaceflight series of the mid-fifties. We have the dialog between Chuck Yeager and Muroc Tower during his epochal faster-than-sound flight. Likewise, the images draw from many sources other than NASA itself, thereby providing a much more complete and well-rounded impression not only of the history of NASA but of its effects on both technology and culture. I was pleased to see that the author drew upon the resources of the NASA Fine Arts Program for some of the imagery for the book, which add a specially emotional and human touch to the experience. All of the photos and art in the book, I might add, are reproduced with a definition that is eye-dazzling in its detail and brilliance. The text is primarily by editor Piers Bizony---who created the no less spectacular ode to “2001: A Space Odyssey---with essays by Dr. Roger Launius, who had been chief historian at NASA for more than a decade, and Andrew Chaikin, author of the recent history of the Apollo lunar landing program, “A Man On the Moon,” and all did the splendid job one would have expected from these authors.I cannot recommend this book more highly. It is an extraordinary achievement in itself, memorializing one of the supreme human and technological achievements of the past century.Ron Miller, author of "Spaceships," "Space Stations" and "The Art of Space"

SPOILER ALERT! THIS REVIEW GIVES AWAY PORTIONS OF THE PLOT OF THIS BOOK. PLEASE DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE ACTUALLY READING THE BOOK AS THERE ARE SPOILERS INCLUDED!Jennifer Bene is a brand new author for me but she was recommended by a significant number of friends so I wanted to give her Thalia series a try. I'm very glad I did. This is the first book in the Thalia trilogy and, although it's far different from most of the books I usually read, I was really glad I took the chance because I thoroughly enjoyed it.Thalia is an ordinary young woman. She has no college education and has been supporting herself by working a series of long-term temp jobs. But her work is beyond excellent. It's only a matter of time before someone decides to take a chance on hiring her full-time, isn't it? Sure, she's a bit of a loner. She doesn't get included in the lunches, after-work drinks or other social events with her co-workers. She doesn't really have a love life. Her mother is dead, and she is far distanced from her father. However, even though her life is far from perfect, she's still optimistic that she will find the job of her dreams and life will turn around for her.As her jerk of a boss leaves for the day, he dumps a project on her desk that has to be finished before the next morning. Furious, Thalia fumes and fusses but finally finishes hours later and heads to her car. After her long day, she's drained. When she reaches the elevator, wouldn't you just know it. It doesn't work! Exhausted, she trudges down the flights of stairs to the garage. Just as she reaches the bottom, she's attacked by a man who throws her against the wall and sexually attacks her. She screams and screams, tries to fight back, but to no avail. Not only does he rape her, but he continues to physically, sexually, and verbally assault and humiliate her, from the parking garage to her car and then to his home. The truly demeaning aspect of this whole episode is Thalia's reaction to this man. Despite all the physical and sexual violence, she's turned on and responds to him in a way she's never reacted to another man. She's beyond ashamed, embarrassed, confused. She's bewildered, dazed, and distracted. When the man, who she eventually recognizes as a barely-known acquaintance, finally leaves her alone, she literally collapses in exhaustion. Her awakening the next morning brings fresh terror as she realizes she's now a prisoner with no way to escape. Over the ensuing days, Thalia learns that she's been taken for a reason, and her life will never again be the same. She's to be "trained" as a slave and sold to the highest bidder. Her captor is mercurial, one moment almost kind and the next crueler than the harshest taskmaster. But Thalia's a fighter and won't give up. The outlook is bleak, her captor cruel, and his partner...well, his partner is a person who gives new meaning to the term "sadist." What can she do? Can she escape and, if so, how? As she learns new aspects of her personality, not all of which she likes, she becomes convinced that her life is over and, in desperation, she becomes more and more defiant and rebellious, not a particularly good thing while you're being held in the hands of two predators. As events spiral out of control for Thalia and she learns she's to be sold in a few days, what can she do to save herself? Can she survive the hell she's been thrust into?Jennifer Bene is a masterful storyteller. The subject matter is very dark, and I have to admit at first I was a bit concerned that perhaps my friends' suggestions had misdirected me. But the story is riveting and, as dark as some of the book's passages are, there's also a beauty and eroticism to the story. And, of course, there's always hope. The main theme of the book, in my opinion, is that despite the terror, violence, and non-consensual sex, even in her darkest moments, Thalia always maintains hope. I have to say that despite my early reservations about the book, I was captivated by the story and kind of wanted to throw my Kindle across the room at the end. (Hint: It ends in a cliffhanger so you'll definitely want to buy the next two books in the series which, fortunately for all of us, are already published so you don't have to wait for Ms. Bene to write and publish them.)I would be remiss if I did not make one final comment. This is an ADULT book. It contains very dark, explicit, and non-consensual sexual scenes and explicit language. If you do not enjoy dark erotic romance, particularly that which contains non-consensual and explicit sexual scenes, then PLEASE CAREFULLY consider your purchase before starting this series. PLEASE DON'T BUY ANY BOOK IN A GENRE YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY AND THEN LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW OF THE BOOK AS IT'S NOT FAIR TO THE AUTHOR! She works hard to provide a quality work product and if you know before you purchase a book that you will object to the subject matter contained therein, you will be doing not only yourself, but the author, an extreme disservice. But if you do enjoy unconventional dark erotic romance, Ms. Bene's entire Thalia series is definitely one I would recommend. Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

This is an exceptionally well written and totally engaging novel of a woman trapped in a terrifying situation. The fights and struggles Thalia endures, both physically and mentally, are exciting, believable and relatable. As the story progressed I felt closer and closer to Thalia, and more that once yelled "NO!" right along with her. There is also a gripping subplot with the man who captured Thalia. He is also in an untenable situation, one in which his decisions are not entirely his own.Security Binds Her is not a BDSM romance. It is a very strong story in which some of the tools and techniques of BDSM are warped and become a means of torture. This is the first book of a series, but let me assure you that this is a complete novel. Even thought there are questions I hope to have addressed in the next book, Ms Bene was kind enough and talented enough to bring this book to a satisfying conclusion. Please excuse me now while I hurry to go find book two in this series, Striking a Balance.

This book is absolutely stunning! It’s dark,no actually it’s pitch black, suspenseful and sinfully sexy.Naturally when one is kidnapped they would be terrified. But what happens when the mind knows the danger it’s in but the body is responding so very differently?Thalia’s mind and body are working against each other and she’s responding not according to her circumstances. The guard has woken things up in Thalia that she never even knew existed.I really liked that Thalia with everything she was put through never broke. She’s feisty and brave and endured and even in the end knowing the consequences that could come of her choices she still chose “the life raft.”This book is very well written. With a powerful storyline and plot.Gripping, intense powerful book with strong BDSM interwoven in it.The scenes are dark but thrilling and so very hot.The characters are twisted yet intriguing.I’m very excited about reading the next book.

Thalia was at work when she was suddenly kidnapped by the security guard. Turns out, that he was only a security guard to get close to her. He takes her and tries to train her as her new master. As times passes by, she becomes more obedient. He is slowly taking control of her body, but can he capture her mind? It is crazy, but he seems to care about her more than just as a trainer. She seems to trust him, as much as she possibly can in a situation like this. What is going to happen as time goes on? Will he be able to capture her will? Is he only here as her trainer? Will the lines blur? Y'all should read this to find out!!!I have to say this isn't my cup of tea. This book can be dark and be triggering. At first, I really didn't want to read this. In other books, there is consent and safe words. In this book, there really wasn't any. I wasn't sure if I could read how dark this book can turn. But once you get passed these stuff and realize it is part of the plot, the lines kind of blur. You realize this isn't all black and white. It kind of becomes dark and slightly beautiful in a morally questioning way. I found myself slowly falling for this book. I was so captivated and intrigued by these dark events. Even though I hate reading series, I found myself finishing this book and yearning for the next couple of books. I have to read on, I'm so hooked!!!! Despite how dark it is, y'all should just give it a try!!!I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book.

I bought this version, then the versions of Gambhirananda and Nikhilinanda. Compare Isa Upanisad 3:Katz & Egenes:Sunless are those worlds calledcovered in blinding darkness;there, after departing, go those menwho are slayers of the Self.It has a footnote saying this verse translated by Mahesh Yogi, their guru.here is Gambhirananda:Those worlds of devils are covered by blinding darkness, Those people that kill the Self go to them after giving up this body.and Nikhilanada:Verily, those worlds of the asuras are enveloped in blind darkness; and thereto they all repair after death who are slayers of Atman. Both of the swamis include Sankaracharya's commentary. The only commentary offered by Katz is that the translation by Mahesh Yogi. Without the commentary it is hard to make sense of the verse, even with multiple readings. Both of the swamis offer some introduction to the Sanskrit words in the verse. This is where the Katz version begins to look like a waste of money. The Sanskrit has the word "asura" in it, which means demon. G. translates it properly, and N. just uses the Sanskrit word, with commentary beneath explaining the word. The connotation of that word should not be avoided, as one loses an important meaning of the passage. Here is Easwaran:Those who deny the Self are born againBlind to the Self, enveloped in darkness,Utterly devoid of love for the LordEaswaran at least has notes. Mascaro and Easwaran get the feel for the passage, but Katz is so slick the meaning is very hard to access.Since the Upanishads are for study, get something where you can get a sense of the original words of the passage. Easwaran and Mascaro i would avoid too because of loose use of the word "Lord" for example. That word tell you nothing, because in Sanskrit there are many words that can be translated by that one English word, and they all have different connotations. In this case translating Atman as "Lord" is close to being irresponsible. Better to have left it alone, or to follow the more standard translation "Self" (with a capital s). Both G and N have Sankaracharya's commentary, which is very authoritative. You will not be able to read the text straight through easily, but both have some summary information about the Upanishad, so you will be able to have a grasp of the whole thing as you read the parts. This is more complicated though with longer Upanishad, although those are broken up into various parts.

This is the most profound translation of the Upanishads that I have ever read. Besides being fun to read and true to the original, the translators clearly have the experiences that are being discussed in the Upanishads. When a translation comes from direct experience, as this does, I notice that some quality of that experience comes to the reader. For example, the conversation in the Katha Upanishad and Death are good to read for anyone who is experiencing a loss of a family member or facing a serious illness--well presented, beautifully phrased, and profoundly enlightening. I hope that Profs. Vernon Katz and Thomas Egenes translate more of the Vedic literature soon.

Juan Mascaro's selections of the Upanishads are an intriguing glimpse into Hindu scripture and represent "the end" of the ancient Vedas and by extension the end of all knowing and seeking. The selections have various modes of presentation but one unifying message and theme: seeking to know the knower, to see the light of Truth, to go beyond the cycle of life and death. These diverse writings distill the multitude of cosmology into but a few lines; they fearlessly ask and answer the most daunting questions mankind has thought to ask, in but a few pages; in line with so many enduring texts they emphasize letting go of desire and achieving self-control. These selections are brief in terms of pages but longer than most in terms of meaning and value. If you get through this book in a matter of days, you didn't really read it, you didn't pay attention, you didn't respect the wisdom or give it its due.I am not overstating when I say that aside from the great value of these selections, Juan Mascaro's introduction would have been worth the cost on its own. As with the Dhammapada he shows a deep appreciation for the source material and an equally strong desire to retain its poetry and potency while bringing these ancient works to modern readers in a fluid, impactful style. It is truly a shame that Mascaro was not a translator of more ancient works, but his three translations for Penguin Classics are perhaps more than anyone could ask for and will certainly remain among my most cherished books

I first bought the Kindle version and began reading, and felt it was necessary to then purchase a paperback version in order to continue. The problem with the Kindle version is that it was released with wonky fonts not aligning (the transliteration font is too far above the baseline). This is very distracting. I feel that the Kindle version should be immediately corrected and re-released, with a free upgrade for purchasers of the first release.Meanwhile, I now additionally own the paperback version and am happily continuing to dive deep into this superb translation of the Upanishads!
