Short version: If you're a CS Harris/Sebastian St Cyr fan looking for a new series to dig into...this is probably not what you're looking for.This is more like a 2.5 star book to me, but giving it 3 stars because it's not actually a terrible or badly-written book.This book kept popping up as a recommendation while searching for books like CS Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr Regency-era mystery/thrillers series, which I love because they're vaguely hard-boiled mysteries. As I'm a sucker for mysteries set in that era, I gave this book a shot. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that Penrose's book subscribes to all the cliches of generic, Regency-set romance novels (ie those titled "The Unbridled Duke's Lover" or whatever) - where the men are always handsome, misunderstood rakes who Do the Right Thing and the women are always hiding something from the men, strong-willed and musing over the chiseled features of the guy who is inevitably not what he seems. The writing itself is consistently very soft, romance novely cliche - "he was very aware of her shoulder touching his," "what right did he have to tell her to do blah blah" etc - which is not at all what I was expecting in a mystery that is being pitched to CS Harris fans (the book even has a blurb spelling that out!). Basically, it's like the author wrote a mass market paperback Avon historical romance with a mystery plot, then left out the parts where the characters fall in love and get it on because she wanted to reach a wider audience than traditional romance novel readers.
Murder on Black Swan Lane was written by Andrea Penrose. This mystery, set during the Regency era, is the first in a new series featuring the delightfully dynamic duo of Wrexford and Sloane.When the charismatic Reverend Josiah Holworthy is found murdered in a church, it is a shocking crime. Suspicion falls on The Earl of Wrexford, who has been known to be one of the targets of Holworthy’s sermons against debauchery. Wrexford didn’t do it, of course, but can he convince Bow Street of his innocence?Meanwhile, Mrs. Charlotte Sloane has a secret- she is A.J. Quill, the satirical cartoonist whose prints have targeted Wrexford in the past. She is not convinced of Wrexford’s guilt, but prints that showcase him with demonic features prove to be lucrative.Eventually, Wrexford locates Quill’s house and his surprised to discover that his quarry is a woman. They enter into an unlikely partnership in order to discover the truth about what happened to Holworthy. Charlotte has good reason not to trust aristocratic gentleman based on events in her past, but her keen eye for details might be the only thing that can save Wrexford.Penrose has created an immersive Regency world filled with period details. It was very satisfying to watch Wrexford and Charlotte uncover the clues that eventually lead them to the identity of the perpetrator. I would also like to point out that I loved almost all of the secondary characters just as much (villains excluded), and although it is hard to pick a favorite, I hope that we get to see more of Sheffield in future mysteries.I would absolutely recommend Murder on Black Swan Lane to fans of historical mysteries. Wrexford and Charlotte have some great chemistry together, and it’s rather pleasant that their rapport is built on mutual respect and admiration rather than attraction. That said, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for those two. I am already eagerly waiting to see which mystery Wrexford and Sloane tackle next!I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I purchased my own copy because I enjoyed this book so much.
There’s so much here to love. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. From the get go, I was pulled in by the mystery, the fabulous characters, Charlotte’s secret role as AJ Quill, her willingness to push boundaries and convention, the highly effective way she would gather research for her drawings, the way the characters from different classes came together, the two boys Raven and Hawk, and the sarcastic and entertaining interaction between the Earl and Charlotte (and really, the Earl and his butler and friend, Sheffield). Forgive the run-on sentence. There are just a remarkable number of fabulous things happening in this book. I can’t wait for the next one!
It's always good to see a new entry in the crowded Regency historical mystery field, especially if it's reasonably well done. Penrose's new series features the Earl of Wrexford, a wealthy nobleman who is also an amateur chemist and too hot tempered for his own good. A suspect in the murder of a fanatical clergyman with whom he had been feuding, he ends up seeking help from an unlikely source: A.J. Quill, a popular political cartoonist who is actually an impoverished widow trying to make ends meet. The book seems a little too underdeveloped and the reader wants to know far more about these intriguing characters with their unusual interests. Presumably the start of a developing partnership/romance, hopefully future books will expand on them. The material on the many scientific discoveries being made at the time and the popularity of the daring cartoonists always lampooning the unpopular Prince of Wales and his family is especially welcome--a fascinating period in history.
This is a good book. It keeps the reader interested throughput. As another reviewer mentioned, however, Penrose does use some worn and sometimes trite phrases, and once in awhile, she drops some 21st century verbiage into the mix. That didn't bother me as much as it might have, but it was enough to take a star.The editing is fairly good, with a few extra or missing words here and there, but nothing as egregious as some self-published writers.No rel blood--a good thing in my book--and the characters are likable, generally. I don't like to give away plots, but I will say that the "bad guy" gets what he deserves.
