Although Adam Smith (1723-1790) is known as the "father of economics," I wanted to read this new biography because he is such a major figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. And even though I avoid economics like the plague, I even managed to learn a bit about this discipline as well. The author follows the same pattern of discussion as he did in his bio of Edmund Burke: first, 156 pages of strictly biographical material, and then two further sections on Smith's thought and the impact of his ideas. This is a lot of ground to cover in even a 334 page book, but the author (a Member of Parliament and Ph.D. in economics) pulls it off with only a few problems. The best thing about the intro biographical section is that the author shows how Smith developed some of his key concepts and the context that gave rise to them. So the reader learns about such key concepts as the "impartial spectator," the "invisible hand," and his theory of moral sentiments by reviewing his writings and activities. This is not as true in the second section on Smith's thought which gets into some of his economic theories as well as the development of economic analysis up to the present. Here the reader is hit with concepts like "general equilibrium theory," "the principle of comparative advantage," and diminishing marginal utility, not in conjunction with Smith's own activities but basically as a lesson in economics. I particularly had trouble with this approach in Chapter 7. By contrast Chapter 8 on Smith and markets (really a key concept for Smith) came through much clearer after a second reading. The final two chapters are basically defenses of Smith against the charge that the nasty elements of contemporary capitalism were his doing as a result of "The Wealth of Nations" (1776), which as the author demonstrates is somewhat ridiculous.A lot of the key figures in the Scottish Enlightenment interact with Smith and make appearances: David Hume; Lord Kames; Dr. Cullen; Gershom Carmichael; and Francis Hutcheson to name a few. I found the author's discussion of Smith's "the science of man" quite interesting, as well as his examination of how the tiny and impoverished Scotland of Smith's day gave rise to this enormous and influential intellectual outburst of the Scottish Enlightenment. So the book has much to offer in that it covers the setting of the Enlightenment, delivers an highly insightful biography of Smith, and also examines some important economic concepts related to Smith and their impact. Much meat on these bones to poke through. The analysis is supported by 37 pages of notes, a nice bibliography, an index and a group of interesting illustrations, some in full color. Whether you are interested in economics, or Smith's life, or the Scottish enlightenment, there is much here to engage you.

“BY THEN, HOWEVER, THE GREATEST EARLY ANALYSIS OF THE DEEP causes of the American war had already been out for four months. The Wealth of Nations was published in London on 9 March 1776.’’Interesting that the date of the American Revolution and Smith’s Economic Revolution are identical is not coincidence.“The sheer range, length and brilliance of Smith’s work render any summary inadequate. But the full title of the book gives a flavour of its contents: An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. This is not an economic textbook, though it is full of analysis, lessons and information. Rather, it is a book about economic processes and economic development. Nations, it argues from a vast array of evidence, can be wealthy and prosperous, or poor and struggling. But national wealth is not merely circumstantial or divinely bequeathed, it is created by human hand. It is not a stock of currency or bullion, or indeed a stock of anything, but ‘the annual produce of the land and labour of any nation’.This is anti-mercantilism. And mercantilism can be considered as foundation cause of the American Revolution. This illustrates the wide range of both Smith’s book and Norman’s biography. Norman presents Smith’s thought with sympathy and respect. Doesn’t idolize Smith, but points out some contradictions and omissions. For example . . .“His remarks on value are confusing, and his cost-of-production theory and its cousin, the labour theory of value, proved to be a blind alley to most nineteenth-century theorists, and command little support today except among some Marxist economists. And there are central areas of modern economic theory—concerning demand, marginal utility, monetary policy, mass unemployment, the business cycle, to name a few—on which The Wealth of Nations has little if anything direct to say. Much of this is to be expected, since Smith wrote at the last moment of the pre-industrial age.’’In fact, the labor theory of value is probably still used by many people without conscious thought. Creates bad decisions. In contrast . . .“These shortcomings are important, though they pale beside the breathtaking sweep and richness of The Wealth of Nations. And there is one thing that Smith gets triumphantly, monumentally right, that guarantees his place among the immortals: he sets himself to address the foundational question of how far the pursuit of individual self-interest through cultural and market exchange can yield economic growth and socially beneficial outcomes.’’(many still can’t grasp importance)“That marks the moment at which economics starts to come of age. In posing this question, Smith highlighted the division of labour: one of the most extraordinary and important phenomena in all of human existence.’’‘Division of labor’ is incredible source of wealth and prosperity! Smith nailed it!“More prosaically, he was also the first thinker to place markets, competition and market exchange squarely at the centre of economics. . . . But only Smith formed these ideas into a general theory, his ‘system of natural liberty’, explored its implications both for individual markets and for commercial society as a whole, and then applied his ideas to some of the key economic issues of the day. And, more than two centuries after his death, his analysis remains absolutely fundamental to mainstream economics.’’PART ONE: LIFEChapter 1 Kirkcaldy Boy, 1723–1746Chapter 2 ‘The Most Useful, Happiest and Most Honourable Period of my Life’, 1746–1759Chapter 3 Enlightened Interlude, 1760–1773Chapter 4 ‘You are Surely to Reign Alone on These Subjects’, 1773–1776Chapter 5 Working to the End, 1776–1790PART TWO: THOUGHTChapter 6 Reputation, Fact and MythChapter 7 Smith’s EconomicsChapter 8 Adam Smith and MarketsPART THREE: IMPACTChapter 9 Capitalism and its DiscontentsChapter 10 The Moral Basis of Commercial SocietyConclusion: Why it MattersNorman writing for serious, even educated reader. Not obscure or pedantic, but detailed, researched and comprehensive. Reader will need interest in economics, sociology, political thought, intellectual history.Nevertheless, well worth the effort. From conclusion . . .“We need a new master-narrative for our times. We need better frameworks of public understanding, better explanations, better shared identities, through which we can come to terms with these issues. But, to create them, we must return to the dawn of our economic modernity, and to Adam Smith himself.’’What was the foundation of Smith’s ‘master narrative’?“But if Smith’s evolutionary account cannot ultimately escape a broadly Christian moral ethos, there are at least other potential sources of moral inspiration available.’’Well . . . maybe other ‘potential sources of morality’. Maybe not . . .“Within this context, his egalitarian outlook demands in principle that all voices should be able to be heard, and as communications expand, so too does the Smithian capacity for sympathy. Norms may flourish and have value in a restricted social context, but they are always potentially subject to review, via the impartial spectator, in a context that is broader, more equal or more free. Human society and the institutions that compose it deserve respect, but this does not insulate particular societies from criticism for practices that are or would be condemned more widely. A degree of mutual recognition is not a moral free-for-all.’’Norman wants (demands) new basis for rules, norms. He honestly can’t even propose another, other than political power/influence. Well . . . he is a serving politician.Fifteen color photographsOver two hundred referencesDozens of notes (linked)Detailed index (linked)

Lots of snippets about Smith’s life and friends, but very weak discussions about his two seminal works. The author seems to be trying to dismiss Smith rather than focusing on the influence his writings have had and the number of his ideas that still ring true. Don’t read this book. Read Smith in the original. You will get a much better return on your time.

For the non-academic this is an excellent book of introduction on Adam Smith. Throughout the book the author dismisses many of the misunderstandings regarding his natural philosophy and elaborates many of the myths regarding his economic principles and theories. He directly connects correctly his morals and ethics associated with his political economy.

I decided to read Adam Smith after watching Jesse Norman’s impressive presentation on CSPAN’s Book TV. The first half of the book is a straightforward, chronological biography - Smith'’s life, works, and ideas. The remainder is an analysis of Smith’s writings with an emphasis on refuting misconceptions about his ideas on markets and capitalism and an explanation of the moral basis underpinning his thought. The book continues with a discussion of the current distortions and deviations from Smith’s conception of free markets and capitalism. The concluding chapter, Why it Matters, extols the benefits of a healthy commercial society but is also a powerful warning about its creeping subversion by crony capitalism, political dysfunction, rapid technological change, and evolving (decaying) social norms. Timely, scholarly, and readable, this book is highly recommended.

Well written account of Smith's life and current relevance. Highly recommend

I teach 1st grade and ordered this book as part of my Black History Month and Women's History Month units. My students were fascinated with Ms. Parks. The book is too high for them to read on their own in a center but worked well for whole group discussion. The photographs were good and the text was broken into chunks which made for quick reads and discussion.

My daughter is fascinated with history, so I purchased this magazine for her to devour. She loved it, it has so many cool "facts" spread throughout the pages as well. A really fun read, with beautiful colored pictures and print. Very well designed and layed out.

My daughter was learning about Rosa Parks in school, so I purchased this book for her to read at home. I enjoyed reading it with her and it gave us some talking points to discuss while reading it.

A little challenging for the reading level. My son couldn't read it as easily as other books of the same level.

This book really helped me through African-American History month. Easy to read and understand for 1st and 2nd grade students. I read this to my kindergarten class and Rosa Parks is there biggest heroine.

Very glad to have found this little book to add to my grandsons Civil Rights collection.

Perfect for my second graders research project

Great book

Some people gush about Paleo with an almost religious fervor. That kind of turns me off to anything. Fortunately, this book doesn't do that and instead makes Paleo sound simply like another diet choice while explaining the advantages. I'm still not sold on a Paleo diet because I don't want to give up miso, beans, legumes and kefir. That doesn't mean that I won't serve and eat some Paleo dishes and meals. The book discusses why cholesterol is bad and that both low-carb and Paleo diets can be used to help reduce your cholesterol levels. There's many sections of recipes for both diets, but not a lot of recipes in each section. There were several sections in the low-carb book that had recipes I'd make and eat like the Picnic, Wok, and Drink headings. The Breakfast section of the Paleo cookbook offered several attractive choices. We did make some Lemon Pancakes, Apricot Peach Slush, Chocolate Sponge Cake with Strawberries and Lettuce Roll-up with Pumpkin Seed Pate (but not all at the same time). My SO and I agreed all were tasty and there's a few more we want to try. There's a few recipes that have more steps than other cookbooks we've downloaded, but not too many to be prohibitive. He had no problem with making complicated recipes and often does exactly that from print cookbooks and magazines. We did take issue with some of the recipes in the low-carb cookbook because too many had heavy cream, various cheeses, mayonnaise and such, sometimes in combination, that are often high in cholesterol. My doc has told me to limit these foods for that reason.I also didn't like the instructions calling for packets of sugar substitutes, which suggested artifical sweeteners to me. Those aren't good for you. Why not give amounts for honey or one of the natural sugar substitutes the author lists later in the book. For that matter, the recipes calling for sugar could've used one of these natural substitutes too.The book has some lists of food to eat in Paleo and for low-carb as well as foods to avoid and a list of main ingredients (like millet) to look for in bread. I received this at a free or discounted price in exchange for my honest review. Because there aren't enough recipes in here to really make a new diet plan and because there's too many low-carb recipes with ingredients my doc has told me to avoid to help my cholesterol level, I'm rating this as "it's okay". It is an easy to read and follow cookbook. If my review has been helpful to you, please click yes below. I look at Amazon reviews before deciding what to try and buy, so I do my best to share my experience with the item.

The first thing to do when trying to lower cholesterol is to change the way we eat. In this book the author suggests that we eat lean, high protein meat and fresh fruits and vegetables. Junk food and processed food are full of carbohydrates, calories, sodium and sugar as well as preservatives. We need to read the labels to find all that hidden sugar and a lot of other bad things. A good fat and high fiber diet will help lower cholesterol and it is a good idea to make the new diet a lifestyle change for better overall health. The author says that if we stick to a diet of nutritious foods with low carbohydrates and the Paleolithic diet we can stop craving the wrong foods. Another good suggestion is to eat when hungry not eat just because it is time to eat. There are two diets in this book that can work separately or together to lower cholesterol and promote good health. The first diet discussed is a low carbohydrate diet. There is a list of low carbohydrate foods and a list of natural low carbohydrate foods for snacks. There are a lot of good recipes of all kinds and for all times of the day including desserts. The dinner we had tonight came from these recipes and the kids asked when we could have it again because they liked it and did not know it was good for them as well. There are also suggestions on freezing vegetables for off season cooking and on using herbs for seasoning. The second diet discussed is the Paleolithic diet. The Paleo diet is basically eating as our ancestors did many years ago before the use of grains began. According to this book there are people all over the world who still eat this way and they are much healthier than we are. This is a high protein, high fiber and low carbohydrate diet. It helps with lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure and raising energy levels. This diet allows more fat which creates more energy. The author discusses foods to eat and foods to avoid. There are recipes and meal plans as well as tips on eating out.The book is well written and organized. The recipes appear easy to prepare and are organized well.I received tis book free for my honest review.

Review

Reviews for 30th Anniversary Edition: "Dawkins first book, The Selfish Gene, was a smash hit...Best of all, Dawkins laid out this biology-some of it truly subtle-in stunningly lucid prose. (It is, in my view, the best work of popular science ever written.)" --New York Review of Books"This important book could hardly be more exciting." --The Economist"The sort of popular science writing that makes the reader feel like a genius." --New York Times"Who should read this book? Everyone interested in the universe and their place in it." --Jeffrey R. Baylis, Animal Behaviour"This book should be read, can be read, by almost everyone. It describes with great skill a new face of the theory of evolution."--W. D. Hamilton, Science"The presentations are remarkable for their clarity and simplicity, intelligible to any schoolchild, yet so little condescending as to be a pleasure to the professional." --American Scientist

I recommend this book and learned a great deal from it. Please consider this review in that light. This book which sets out the gene centric theory of evolution is difficult for a lay reader (me) to review. Dawkins tries to make the subject understandable to just about any non-science but reasonably well -educated reader. Throughout the book, Dawkins attempts to make it more approachable by using snappy colloquial language. Nevertheless, this is a challenging read. For a lay reader, part of the challenge is sorting through the book’s near endless digressions in which Dawkins “rebuts” the contrary views of some very well-respected evolutionists (e.g. E.O. Wilson, S.J. Gould and others). I was/am uninterested in these quarrels and have no way of evaluating their merits. However, many of these are integrated into the explanatory text so that it is hard to skip over them. The book is listed at 450 pages of which 100 pages are devoted to end- notes which contain even more rebuttals/explanations of other competing thinking in the field. I wish the book were 250 pages and the end-notes 200 pages. I believe the lucidity of the text would be much improved.

So I had to read this for my Moral Development class. And I suppose if you're just reading to find out what a breakthrough evolutionary theory looked like 50 years ago, then it's a good read. Don't get me wrong, this book was brilliant in its time, and it's likely to entertain you. However, nothing is ever as simple as Dawkins tries to make it out to be, evolution least of all. Gene-driven evolution is, to this day, considered to be an umbrella all other evolution research must fall under, and that is the crux of the problem. Some of the more recent research involving gene expression, has to work much harder than it should, in order to fall under this umbrella. Worse, genuine breakthroughs like Masatoshi Nei's "Mutation Driven Evolution" will often get sidelined because Dawkins presented mutation as secondary to natural selection. It's hard to take this book at face value when you discover research that presents locusts and a dozen species of grasshoppers having exactly the same genetic material, expressing itself differently solely based on serotonin levels. It's even harder to take it seriously when he claims that we must teach our children altruism, for it is certainly not to be found in their genetic material. To a scientist, these types of proclamations are ghastly. There is no experiment that has been performed, or can be performed, that would validate such a claim. Just because we haven't discovered an empathy gene, this can't be a proof of its nonexistence. Dawkins builds his work on scientists who came before him, drawing heavily and often on their research when it suits him. When it doesn't, such as Mendel's experiments with manipulating traits of bees and his inadvertent creation of a vicious breed that he had to exterminate, Dawkins conveniently ignores the obvious. He saves himself, more than once, by specifying that his theories are not meant to be applied to human beings, However, his language makes it clear that this is something he'd intended, before validity and reliability of his statements got in the way.All in all, my frustration is mainly with the insistence of treating this book as anything other than what it is. A brilliant work from 50 years ago that is long past its due date, and still being peddled to those who need a simple explanation of evolution, one where little science is needed. And David Dobbs rightly called it out: "The gene-centric model survives because simplicity is a hugely advantageous trait for an idea to possess."

My Copy: Oxford Univ. Press: 30th Anniversary Edition (Hardbound)There is much more to "The Selfish Gene" than is advertised, even in the most glowing of its reviews. In fact, I (not a biologist, but fascinated by evolution ever since "dinosaurs" and the first high school biology course) have been vaguely aware of this book since its initial wave of rave reviews many years ago, but never bothered to read it because as it was advertised its theme(s) always seemed pretty obvious. But something recently piqued my curiosity again, not sure what that was now, and after reading the prefatory material online I finally decided to take a look. After reading quickly through the first 3 chapters, it became apparent that there was a great deal more underlying the book than was overtly presented, that it was not just an over-extended, over-simplified, over-popularized, metaphorical presentation .... but rather that its metaphorical treatment is painstakingly faithful to an elaborate, closely-reasoned, even rigorous, scientific underpinning. At which point, I stopped reading and began again from the beginning, first the prefatory material, then from page 1, this time more slowly and more carefully, taking care to appreciate and reflect on all the markers of the underlying basis and their implications. This is a wonderful book, even beautiful in many respects, from its initial beginning (at the "beginning") with the purely chemical/physics "evolution" of the primordial soup (cast suggestively in the form of biological evolution); to the consequent continuity with the creation of "replicators", elementary "survival" cells, genes, and the beginnings of life forms; to the important distinction between genes and individuals, as genes and their "survival vehicles" (the first cells and "us", for example); to the nicely extended notion of "gene" itself, required by underlying scientific reality; to a clear presentation of the conflict between Darwinian and "group" selection and evolution; to the nature of evolution, operating (in distinct ways) in terms of both genes and individuals, aka both genes and "their" survival vehicles, aka both chemical/physics and biological evolution; to genetic kinship and its very special selective and social implications; ... ; to the delicious End Notes to the 1st eleven chapters, which provide much supporting and fascinating material."The Selfish Gene" goes on to clarify not only its expressed subject, the nature and genesis of Selfishness and Altruism, but to make clear the error, scope, and source of various (idealistic, and often political) arguments and ideas centered around group selection fallacies, including the genesis of (ill-conceived) "group-beneficial", cooperative "functions" vs. (individual) evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS) and kinship. It also sheds light on many other commonly-posed questions, among them: the fundamental "reason" for the 50:50 sex ratio (despite the number of different breeding strategies observed for male competitors); the driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution depends; the variety and shadings of competing "strategies", which can be both conceived and advantageous, clustered around a given regard (partly on account of environmental inconstancy), one incidental, unintended but important, implication of which is that this is itself an evolutionary driving source of the natural variability upon which (continuing) evolution operates; .... and NOT so commonly posed: that "In its long journey down the generations therefore, an [ANY] average gene will spend approximately half its time sitting in male bodies, and the other half sitting in female bodies", and thus genes will generally contribute positively to both sexes, sometimes in very different ways, and that, indeed, many "purely male / purely female" effects pass (unexpressed) through many bodies of the opposite sex; and much, much more.Beautifully written and packed with wonderful insights, "The Selfish Gene" is not only well-worth the read, but will amply reward the reader in proportion to the thoughtfulness and reflection with which they read it. In fact, there is so much food for thought in the story-lines and examples (e.g., the fig, "lichenization", and organelle endosymbiosis) provided in "The Selfish Gene", that one must often stop and consider, at length and at leisure, the questions which it provokes or which Dawkins rhetorically poses.I will, however, amend Dawkins' wonderful characterization of "us" (Preface to the First Edition, p. xxi): “We are survival machines --- robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. This is a truth which still fills me with astonishment. Though I have known it for years, I never seem to get fully used to it.” ...... by grafting it to my own previous synopsis, with the result:"We are Conditioned-Reaction Engines [built on Basic Senses + Unconditioned Reflexes (among them innate Kantian "Categories", instincts, emotions, etc.)] built as Gene-Survival "Machines" [genetically "programmed" to serve the "interests" of our genes] = Pavlo-Kantian Conditioned-Reaction, Darwin-Dawkins Gene-Survival Automatons.

This is the first of his books I've read, and I expect to read all his others before I die. A challenging topic to understand, for me anyway. Dawkins writes clearly, with wit.

Two editors of the book are Field medalists, but of the two, Witten and Deligne, Deligne is a pure mathematician while only Witten is a physicist. In the preface of the book, the other editors describe their gratitude to Witten for the time and effort he and other physicists put in during the Special Year (1996-7) from which the book arose as lecture notes. I think this educational process must have been extremely valuable, but I find the book itself to be not well-organized and focused, and the lecture notes are somewhat cryptic. That said, as articles, I feel that individually the various parts of the book might be very worthwhile. I was looking for something more focused and systematic, that explains four and not five stars. I feel that pure mathematicians have an extremely daunting task in penetrating the often abstruse aspects of quantum field theory and string theory. On the other hand, there is obviously a mathematical richness about these fields. For people who are much better prepared than I, and are at a research level, I believe this book might be useful. Still, I think it was helpful to know of the existence of this book.

Together with its complementary Vol. 2, THIS book is the one to read right after one learns the standard tricks of the trade, from a "physicist's book" like Peskin/Schroeder or Ryder, or even Weinberg. Granted, that Weinberg, in his 3 volume tome, does cover QFT to a tremendous detail and commendable mathematical rigour. But there is still a mathematical void that Weinberg leaves. This book, written by some of the most accomplished mathematical physicists of today (Witten, Deligne, Freed, Kazhdan), eliminates that void and puts the reader at the cutting edge of what is known at present in terms of the mathematical foundations of quantum field theory. For that alone, this book is highly recommended, but only for the physicist who has a strong mathematical bent and curiosity. The coverage of topics is more or less well balanced, and the writing is precise, crisp and clear.

A real book for a real mathematician. If you are a mathematician learning to apply math to quantum physics, do not go without this book series. It is exceptional!! Mathematically written with variety and depth not met in any other resource that I have seen specifically relating the two.You will not be unhappy with this, I guarantee it.<3 <3 this book series.

This book is an excellent compliation of articles written for mathematicians who want to understand quantum field theory. It is not surprising then that the articles are very formal and there is no attempt to give any physical intuition to the subject of quantum field theory. This does not mean however that aspiring physicists who want to specialize in quantum field theory should ont take a look at the contents. The two volumes are worth reading, even if every article cannot be read because of time constraints. All of the articles are written by the some of the major players in the mathematics of quantum field theory. Volume 1 starts off with a glossary of the terms used by physicists in quantum field theory and is nicely written. The next few hundred pages are devoted to supersymmetry and supermanifolds. A very abstract approach is given to these areas, with the emphasis not on computation but on the structure of supermanifolds as they would be studied mathematically. There is an article on classical field theory put in these pages, which is written by Pierre Deligne and Daniel Freed, and discussed in the framework of fiber bundles. The discussion of topological terms in the classical Lagrangian is especially well written. There is an introduction to smooth Deligne cohomology in this article, and this is nice because of the difficulty in finding understandable literature on this subject. Part Two of Volume 1 is devoted to the formal mathematical aspects of quantum field theory. After a short introduction to canonical quantization, the Wightman approach is discussed in an article by David Kazhdan. Most refreshing is that statement of Kazhdan that the Wightman approach does not work for gauge field theories. This article is packed with interesting insights, especially the section on scattering theory, wherein Kazdan explains how the constructions in scattering theory have no finite dimensional analogs. The article by Witten on the Dirac operator in finite dimensions is fascinating and a good introduction to how powerful concepts from quantum field theory can be used to prove important results in mathematics. A fairly large collection of problems (with solutions) ends Volume 1. The first part of Volume 2 is devoted entirely to the mathematics of string theory and conformal field theory. The article by D'Hoker stands out as one that is especially readable and informative. D. Gaitsgory has a well written article on vertex algebras and defines in a very rigorous manner the constructions that occur in the subject. The last part of Volume 2 discusses the dynamics of quantum field theory and uses as much mathematical rigor as possible. One gets the impression that it this is the area where it is most difficult to proceed in an entirely rigorous way. Path integrals, not yet defined mathematically and used throughout the discussion. The best article in Volume 2, indeed of the entire two volumes is the one on N = 2 Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. It is here that the most fascinating constructions in all of mathematics find their place. These two volumes are definitely worth having on one's shelf, and the price is very reasonable considering the expertise of the authors and considering what one will take away after reading them.

If you are a mathematician and want to know what QFT and string theory (ST) are about, or if you are a string theorist, but want to know more about the mathematics behind the theory, then this book is what you are looking for. This book is totally different than any other standard textbook on QFT or ST. Mathematicians will love the fact that it is written in a language that is (close to) theirs, and physicists will enjoy it (provided they have a more solid background in mathematics than the average practical physicists), because it shows QFT and ST from completely "new" angles. The book is a collection of lectures given by the various contributors, which fit together perfectly . The first volume has a very good overview of concepts and definitions at the very beginning and serves as a more mathematically oriented introductory treatment of SUSY and QFT with many advanced topics near the end. The second volume starts with an axiomatic approach of CFT and its use in string theory and then quantises strings with the BRST method (on a more mathematical level than usual), which is done superbly. It's a great reference, a wonderful textbook and a true delicacy in modern mathematical physics. A MUST HAVE for every mathematically inclined physicst or any mathematician with interests in physics! Great value for money...

I bought the audiobook and love it. I have long bus rides to and from NYC and enjoy listening to audiobooks. This book has a lot of great ideas on networking with millionaires. Through audiobooks like this one I've come to realize working with the wealthy may be easier than the not wealthy!

This book is content rich and will an eye opener as to how one should really approach networking. It is a must have for anyone's library.

Interesting way to plan on success.I found the recommendations valuable. I will incorporate these into my life, and recommend them to my daughters as well.

This CD is not an audio book. It's an amateurish series of interviews with Thomas Stanley on how to try and sell things to rich people. This recording seems very uncharacteristic for Stanley because he has written some good books about millionaires and personal finance. By contrast, these recording has a "sleazy salesman" feel and the scripted questions asked by the interviewer are laughable. Stick to Stanley's other books.

A very interesting slant on giving great customer service. The essential idea in Networking with Millionaires is to provide more than your core product; to go above and beyond the call of duty. Dr Stanley provides a number of examples of this and a number of different approaches to try.True many examples are similar & that almost gained this CD a 4 star review from me... but then I thought of the value of the information, the fact that I will encourage everyone of my staff in every type of business to listen to this and the fact that I have learnt enough to cover the meagre cost of this CD many times over. And, after all repetition is the mother of mastery! It is always great to hear stories of success and inspiration, this CD combines these with approaches that will work in any country and industry - truly global advice.True, it's a little simple in places and the sound bites of various role plays are very cheesy, but overall I cannot give this less than 5 stars - the information is just too valuable.Enjoy it... but most of all, take action with what you learn & USE IT!

I'm a Stanley fan.. loved the "next door" books and learned much.I heard this title through Audible.com.. half the price for the full unabridged interview. I highly recommend audible.com for many other reasons, but this title makes it worth a trial membership. The true measure of lasting value for me is how often I refer to it in coaching conversations. I've listened to it multiple times, and believe it's responsible for a paradigm shift in how I look at networking and selling. If you intend to sell or market to anyone, especaily anyone with enough money or activity to be hard to reach, you MUST get this!

Networking with Millionaires is the audio version of Stanley's book "Networking with the Affluent." It is not a "word for word" audio book, but rather a partially scripted interview with Stanley where he covers the same points with same stories he uses in the book. The basic concept is that successful sales professionals build referral business by offering services beyond their core product(s). Stanley offers some new and creative ways of using the principle of "going the extra mile" for building a network of affluent and influential people who have the ability to help you if they are so inclined. Even though there are some helpful specific suggestions of how to connect with your target group(s), what is most important is having a mindset that thinks outside the box.One aspect of the recording that I particularly appreciated was providing specific reference materials that can help you learn more about how to identify concentrations of wealth. For example, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and some directories of trade associations. These references go by very quickly in the recording, so you may need to look at a copy of the book to identify them all. These reference materials are rather obscure, so I doubt I would have ever heard of them had I not listened to/read "Networking with Millionaires."One reviewer made a valid point that it appears that Stanley is suggesting that we completely rely on the benevolence of the decision makers. While it is true that he does not discuss the downside in the book, I think it is important to use some common sense. There is a risk that you won't directly receive any benefit from helping others. You have to be judicious and not go crazy. There are clues you can look for to identify takers rather than givers. There will be times when you do not appear to receive any specific benefit from the help you provide. If you come across an obvious "taker," simply cut your losses as quickly as possible and move on. The benefits of Stanley's approach FAR outweigh this possible downside. Stanley's objective was to outline a workable approach, so I don't fault him for not including information on the downside. His materials are for professional people who should be able fill in that gap on their own.

Everyone wants to do business with successful people. Learning howto approach them, how they think and how to work with them is key in realizing that pursuit. This was a great window into how successful people operate, what is important to them and what it takes to engage them in business.
