That and I was too late to get a copy of "Behind the Claw" (the conventional setting for Traveller campaigns.)The material devoted to the "Behind the Claw" sector hints at a highly contested section of space divided by three different human empires, plagued by the chaotic Vagrr corsairs as well as anyone devious enough to put together a pirate crew. (Buying a Starship should be NO problem what with nearly every starport housing a shipyard!)What "Rim of Fire" does offer is an epic battle between two dominant races of Humaniti, the displaced Vilani and the descendents of the birth-world of the galaxy, Terra. Though the Confederation is definitely billed as the setting heavies, it's not hard to develop some sympathy, especially since the Imperial side is in some cases equally culpable for Sector unrest.Also, the sector lies between the worlds of the Aslan and Hiver Empire, both whom provided added tension and potential.The riddle of the Ancients doesn't seem to have quite the weight that it does in the original setting, and their artifacts and influence seem to be quite sparse, traded instead for worlds struggling with old resentments and a high degree of political intrigue.And whatever you do, don't turn your back on the Vegans. Encompassed within the sector, this race of previously oppressed aliens has broken the shackles of slavery and technologically surpassed their neighbors. (It's a good thing they're so "friendly.")By itself, "Rim of Fire" is a rather compelling setting. You're less likely to be attacked outright by pirates or aliens, but don't rule the possibility out! Cutting along the spinward side of the sector is a simmering interstellar border along which the Xth Interstellar War could break at any unsuspecting moment. Indeed the fires from the previous conflict are still smoldering on many worlds.In essence, "Rim of Fire" offers an intriguing alternative setting for the Traveller universe without sacrificing too many of the conventions one would expect. There is plenty of room in this setting for being heroic or devious. And there are some rather quaint and interesting worlds to visit.

Great book. The best science works are told in a historical context and this is a stellar example of such. The story starts so long ago with the initial theories of the atom and moves at a balanced pace. The writing style is easy to read and the thoroughness of detail is impressive....this book WILL contain many things you didn't know even if you are well versed on the subject. If you are looking at this book, you are likely one of the green minded folk who have taken to nuclear power as lesser evil but this book is not agenda driven, the lunacy of some aspects of our neutron driven past are very much called out, and with humor at times. That makes this an important read if you are a half-life environmentalist and need a full accounting of nuke history. I really avoid 1-star and 5-star reviews because of their polarity/distrust but this is truly a 6 star book. Informative, analytical, and crazy fun to read. This is my best book vote for 2015 even though it's half a decade after initial release.

This is a well written treatise on the history, science and philosophy of nuclear technology. I recommend this to anyone curious about the past and future of Nuclear power generation. The author helped make the book more interesting by inserting witty commentary along the way. This is one book I may re-read in the near future.

Worth reading just for the footnotes! The author has a gift for explaining complex topics in nuclear physics/energy/engineering in a clear and entertaining manner. There's a snarky and sarcastic sense of humor, no doubt sharpened by the author's experience in investigating all the ways that humans can mess up supposedly foolproof systems.

I can't remember what led me to this book. Its title is somewhat misleading in that it seems to suggest an academic treatise dense with history and tech-speak. It's anything but. The author does a terrific job of making nuclear technology understandable in terms peppered with enough science to be instructive.The early chapters are a bit of slog, but worth the effort for giving the reader a basic understanding of what's to come. Chapters on the Manhattan project are especially illuminating.Overall, an excellent effort.

Excellent history of nuclear power in the U.S. by a practical engineer who worked in the field. A dangerous fascinating topic written about with a tough no nonsense style and plenty of dark humor. Who would have thought we were crazy enough to fly experimental jets with an unshielded reactor ?? Or to think a viable Would have liked to have had more discussion on modern design and nuclear power's future.

I have worked in our military and civilian nuclear programs since 1976.This book appeared as an unvarnished look at my industry. I did not find a strong anti or pro nuke bias; just what seem to the facts, good and bad about this field.I am glad I found this book.

I got to hear a few tales of nuclear engineering from Dr. Mahaffey while working in the same building with him in the late 1990s, but this book proves those tidbits to have been only the tip of a vast iceberg of knowledge. The big question raised for me, personally, by this readable and fun book is how we can get Dr. Mahaffey writing about some additional subjects for our enjoyment! If he could write exciting science journalism like this about areas outside of his own science, then we could look forward to a whole stream of books the equal of this one.This book shines most in its descriptions of the great experimenters of nuclear physics. Unraveling the behavior of such tiny and difficult-to-observe components of the world as atoms and nuclear particles was a VERY hard problem, and Dr. Mahaffey is at his best when he is guiding the reader through a problem so that when the crucial moment arrives, and he describes the experiment that was performed to take our knowledge one step further, we get to both taste the excitement about what the outcome will be, and also savor the raw cleverness that the pioneers in nuclear engineering had to exercise in order to get matter to yield up its secrets and its structure.Beware that this book is strongest in its physics, but rather light on details when it comes to the actual design of a nuclear power plant. You will not, for example, receive a detailed understanding here of the exact cascade of minute-by-minute failures and misapprehensions that lead to the Three Mile Island incident -- and, consequently, the lessons drawn from such incidents are perhaps not as detailed as they could be. This looks exactly as it does in the photos and is very well made! The colors look true, the book is bound in a nice hardcover, and the paper is a good medium weight. Rather pretty little book. Very excited to finally have a way to keep track of everyones birthday!I will say that I did not read the description and was expecting it to be much larger. This book was no exception to my confusion.I picked this up because it promised me a good, dark time. What I was given: an annoying heroine, pity for the guy that had a serious mental illness that no one seemed to care to help, and an undercover cop that is hilariously clueless. Luke could be the third link in the movie 21 Jump Street.I LOVE dark books, movies, etc., so my problem was not with the scenes. Although there was one at the end that included Asa, Luke, and Sloane that pushed me a little far. Voyeurism was not tagged, so that freaked me out a bit.Asa was the only character that was likable in this book. Luke was nice, but not realistic. Sloane. Oh. My. Gosh. If I could forget one character I've read about, it would be Sloane. She was described as smart, strong, independent, and every other word in the dictionary that was completely the opposite of her. Strong is not staying with someone like Asa, especially not attempting to help him. Strong is pulling yourself up by your bootstrap, and finding other options for your brother. Strong is staying at your house, even if your mom stays out all night. At 18, you should be able to care for yourself when your mom is away. Sloane is not strong.-I didn't care for all of the wrongs in this book to be glorified.-I didn't like the long, flowy descriptions that took up an entire page.-I didn't like how this book was way longer than it needed to be.-I didn't like that there were plot holes.-I didn't like the pace.-I didn't like the writing.-I just didn't like this book. At all.So, there it is. All of my ugly honesty that I hate to show. Buyer beware.

Just WOW!!!I'm by far a Colleen Hoover fan so when I saw the synopsis for Too Late I knew I had to read it.This is like nothing she's ever written before.I loved how Colleen explored her darker side bringing this story to an overwhelmingly new high in her writing career.This story spoke volumes. There are so many layers to the story and to the characters. I was addicted from the very first page!!I loved every character in this book and as much as I should hate Asa and all the pain he pushed onto Sloane, I still loved him.This story is not for the weak at heart.If you love Colleen Hoover books for their innocent charm, then you may want to think twice before reading this or at least go in with an open mind. I honestly felt like this was so different from her other books that it was like reading an entirely different author. HOWEVER... I ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOVED IT!!!I enjoy both styles to Colleen's writing and I'm so glad I read this book.For all the negative reviews, I can see why you feel the way you do. This is opposite of how Colleen normally writes. This dealt with darker issues, drugs, abuse, cops, assault, etc.But the negative reviews are your opinion on the story because you don't like darker reads.Colleen gives a warning and even filed this under C. Hoover versus Colleen Hoover for that reason.The writing spoke for itself though and was so outstanding. Colleen has a mind that thinks outside the box, taking chances and opening doors until she pieces together something that is brilliant and fresh.I feel this way about all of her books and Too Late is no exception!Honestly, I think this is my favorite book of hers to date! The creativity and emotion that went into this story is like nothing I've ever experienced before from any author.I was screaming out loud while listening to this on audio. The narrators truly were so in sync with the characters. All three narrators were amazing and gave me goosebumps!Highly Highly Highly Recommend!!I will definitely be listening to this again!!I'm seriously going to miss Asa, Sloane and Luke!

After reading verity I thought I’d give another one of her books a try and I mean come on verity is amazing! Maybe I had high expectations but this book was even awful for low expectations. The characters were not likable, some of it was just so unrealistic to me. Sloan and luke made such dumb choices I almost feel like they deserved some of the things that happened to them for being so stupid. Oh and I undercover cop behaving that way? Can’t even be in control of his facial expressions and emotions. Give me a break. Awful book. I’m sorry I wasted my time

This story is probably the darkest COHO book I have read. I was disturbed about the storyline because it was not her typical plot. But she nails it. 60% in to the book I think I experienced every emotion possible (confusion, sympathy, hurt, anger, etc).Sloan, an intelligent young college student who lives with her boyfriend Asa. Asa is a dark young man and has a lot of shady business dealings. Carter the undercover cop that is going to take Asa down.This book has a lot of disturbing scenes sexually and emotionally. Reading this book you will think about the people you know that may have been in the same type of situation and relationship. When you have no where else to go me death seems better than the life you have will you do anything to escape. There is multiple opportunities for death to come to Sloan, Asa, and Carter and at the end one of them will die but is it who you think deserves it?45% in to the book I really hated the book but didn't give up. I kept reading and I fell in love with Sloan and what she would eventually need to overcome. I would recommend the book but beware that this isn't like most of the books Coho has written.

I was actually looking for a what to expect book for the 1st year when I ran across this book. I was curious about it and decided to check it out. I was originally just going to read the 1st chapter or so to see if my husband would like it but next thing I know I had read the whole book in one night. This book is hilarious. As an older woman, Gabrielle Douglas story inspires and deeply touches me. I remember watching her with such rapt attention and admiration during the summer Olympics and reminiscing how nearly 20 years earlier, I watched Dominique Dawes with the same feelings. Amazing! Nearly two years later, I tune in to watch the Lifetime biopic and my eyes start to tear up as before the opening. Teary-eyed and proud, I made it through the biopic. And now, with her memoir, I am awarded the opportunity to dive deeper into her story. Fortunately, I read her memoir on my Kindle so my tears did not cause any damage. This is an truly inspirational story. It saddens me that young minority women have to endure any form of racism but as I think about it the Civil Rights Movement occurred in 1960s after 200 years of slavery and a systemized form of oppression. A lot of prejudice and racial bias is still buried deep. Alas, what does not kill you makes you stronger. I am glad that Gabrielle is receiving all the accolades as it is well deserved. I hope her story continues to inspire minority girls to enroll in gymnastics and I hope they pay special attention on the backlash Gabby receives and how well she handles it.

My husband bought this book for our daughter for Christmas. Our daughter has done competitive gymnastics since age 6 and is now 11 years old. A lot of hours, intense training and effort goes into this sport and the fact that our daughter misses out on a lot of things that other kids her age gets to do comes up sometimes. This book is a great read and realization for anyone considering the sport or currently in gymnastics that will open the eyes to the fact that the road to success is not always easy, but as the great Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

One thing that I enjoyed about this novel was that it sounds like a teenager wrote it. Normally, this would usually be a bad thing, but in this case, it's not. After all, Gabby Douglas is a teenager, and it made the novel much more personal.I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys the Olympics, gymnastics, or just loves a great story!

This book is a story of triumph over adversity, and how even a little girl in a disadvantaged home can have a big dream come true. Gabrielle is mature far beyond her years (she had to be), and still she is a little girl with big dreams and a love for fun. The book just keeps surprising as she faces one set-back after another. Just when it looks like she can't miss--her own problem with home sickness nearly does her in. She has a wonderful support team that helps her pull through. Her mother and her siblings just keeps giving her the inspiration to reach higher and higher. It seems like a novel, and yet it is real-life, and big dreams do come true. This book will inspire a lot of little girls to "go for the gold". And, if they have Gabrielle's faith...they can.

I think she is a great leader to the next generation of gymnasts. It's not an easy sport. Having people to look up to is a big deal. Gymnastics hold some of my BEST childhood memories and a few of the most crazy ones too. It's more of a mentally-tough spiritual path than just a sport. She has put a little of the meaningfulness inside the secret-planet sort-of world of a tumbler into words anyone can journey there with.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - it was truly inspirational and something that any age group can learn from. This young lady is very grounded, which shows me that both her families worked as one to keep her focused and on the right track. All the people in her life regardless of the circumstances played a role, some more so than others, but the end result is fantastic. I believe there is much more for this teen as she keeps her eyes focused on her faith and truly revel in the unconditional love of both her families.

I got this book last year and I read it in a few day. It was such a great story about who Gabrielle Douglas was and what her journey was like. It really gives the reader inside look at her life. She is a colorful, expressive writer which makes it a pleasure to read. There are some great pictures inside the book as well and the book cover itself on the back is a poster of her. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants an inspiring read!

Excellent book! Purchased for my 9 year old who loves Gabby Douglas but ended up reading it myself all in one day before she could even start it. Amazing book that gives you a behind the scenes picture of what life was like for Gabby growing up and how hard she had to fight to get to where she is now.
